We love our otters here in South Carolina USA as well... our population is doing so well that some have been relocated to more northern areas where the population has declined. Hi Garry, I can't imagine what it would look like here without any weed? I have got quite used to the green landscape around my boat now! Excellent camaraderie on the high waters in getting the property shaft fixed!!! At 8min 43 there is a shot of a little house fixed onto your boat which with little tubes fixed together. I had one of these in my garden a few years back and was thrilled to watch leaf-Cutter Bees at work making little cocoons for their new offspring. I was so captivated, I took some fantastic up close photos of them! Have you had any use your little house?

In my house at the moment, something is renting a room, but it isn't a leaf cutter; it is something that uses a cement-like paste to seal the entrance? I'll look it up. Good evening Vanessa what a great interesting vlog and full of fellow vlogers to greet and help u, beautiful evening scenes as u rowed down the river for the otter spotting cruise but I'm glad u did manage to see one even if it was the next day. After taking a turn for the worst and 5 days in bed l almost 4got it was Friday and nearly missed u🙄, I've got the sensitive scalp nerves and bad headaches still but some things don't heal that fast so I've been told. Congrats on spotting the otter! They're my favorite animal after my dogs. I've never seen a fresh water otter in the wild, but I've seen the sea otters that hang out along the coast of California. Well done, you!

I learned a long time ago to never say 'this is perfect.' Life took a real spiral after me saying that but one chapter finishes another starts. Though look at the community that came to help you!! You and Fran I would say would be on a similar wavelength. The weed would make great compost, the river trust could compost and sell it? Otters, like river meerkats, cute and sleek through the water. We used to see otters regularly when we were moored on the Little Ouse. We found the best time was around 05.30 in the spring and summer. Got up one morning after it had snowed and our pontoon was covered in otter footprints - and long ‘scrapes’ in the snow from their tails

Beautiful vlog Vanessa, and congratulations on spotting the otter. Congrats too to Mr M for reconnecting the drive shaft to the gear box, it is a potentially catastrophic event, because as the prop slips backwards it fouls the rudder too so you loose steerage as well as forward momentum. Im with Brewster Vanessa, the photography in this vlog was awesome...the golden glows on the sides of the NB's so beautiful. The sunsets on the water. Even the pesky weed looked really pretty...Is the little wooden boat (dingy) new, I dont remember seeing it before. Glad Mr M and helpers fixed the engine and that the recycled vege oil is going well. Have you ever been to Amersham? My GGGGG Grandfathers were the "Wellers" of Amersham and High Wycombe who established the brewery there. A museum is there with their photos and legacy. They owned 1,000s of acres in the area 151 pubs- 9 of which are still operating! My Grandfather's brother sold his shares of the brewery and with his sons set sail for N.Z...establishing the Weller Whaling supply company in Otago. The TikTok and CZcams song "Wellerman" that went viral just recently is my family's song! 😃 Sure would love to see a video on that area...🥰 I believe the Chesham moorage is 3.5m from Amersham?

Lovely vlog again. Great shot of the moon with all the detail. Hopefully you are somewhere where you can watch the meteor shower that peaks tonight. If the prop issue was the bolts needing tightening between the propshaft and the coupling, then get new nylock nuts or it will happen again, and the slipping will permanently damage your propshaft. Hello Anthony! thank you so much for such an epic comment!👍🤩 and for your kind words about my sister; I shall pass them onto her. Now, I shall answer your amazing questions: 1. We saw Alice Grace advertised at Aston Marina and I really liked the pictures on the website. We drove 3.5 hours to take a look at her. We walked through once and then drove off to look at two more boats, but Alice Grace was all we could think about. We put an offer in and bought her; three months later, we were going to the marina every other weekend, straight from a long week at work to spend a couple of days on her. She was already in the water, so no craning in was required. We were lucky as this was before Covid and the steel price increase. 2. We have not had to add any insulation but as is often the case with steel boats on the water, the woodwork like door and window frames is in need of some TLC which we are planning to do soon. 3. The transition to boat life has not been a problem, but we have adapted and changed things that we have done along the way. Life throws challenges at you wherever you live and boat life is no different; the difference for us is that we love this way of life and so that makes overcoming hurdles easier, I think. 4. Wifi is really important as my teaching work is all online and now that I make vlogs, I also need a good speed to upload to CZcams. We have a big mast on the roof linked to a Huawei box which covers the 3 network, I also use my phone to hotspot as this is O2 and recently we found that both were not so reliable on the Chesterfield so we bought a little EE box which we put in the window and top up when we need it. This one is back up for when the other two fail as the other two are much cheaper. 5. Doctor and dentist: I was very honest ( big mistake) with my GP and told them that I would be CCing in a narrowboat, but could I please stay with them for my asthma checkups and medicines?They struck me off. I now use the guest patient system which means that you walk into the nearest GP, register as a visitor ( it takes about 16 days) but mine took less recently and then you can see a GP and get medicines. My dentist is private in Essex and I would never leave them as getting a dentist now is very, very difficult, so I book check ups for when I go to see family that live nearby the dentist, and I have stopped eating sweets!🤭 6. Post: Post is mainly sent to family or post restante services at post offices that we will be arriving to. 7. Electrical items: We limit the amount of electrical items that we use and certain things like hairdryers, you just cannot use unless you have a generator. If we buy something, we look for lower voltage use or USB chargeable items. Recently, I bought an electrical bread oven which runs if the solar is good or when we are cruising. There is a panel on the wall which shows us how many volts of electricity that we have coming in and when this drops to 12v, we start adapting usage or run the engine to get it back up again. Hi David, until followers of the channel started asking about buying a copy of my journal, I really didn't think about publishing it and I am overwhelmed and really chuffed that people want to have a copy. Hi Steve, the company that I was buying it from put up the price to an unaffordable rate, so I contacted Crown Oil but the amount I need is to small for them to deliver. At 8min 43 there is a shot of a little house fixed onto your boat which with little tubes fixed together. I had one of these in my garden a few years back and was thrilled to watch leaf-Cutter Bees at work making little cocoons for their new offspring. I was so captivated, I took some fantastic up close photos of them! Have you had any use your little house?
Oh, I would be chuffed to bits to have a Leaf Cutter Bee nesting in my little house. Those photos that you took must be amazing; if you get time, would you be able to email them across to me? In my house at the moment, something is renting a room, but it isn't a leaf cutter; it is something that uses a cement-like paste to seal the entrance? I'll look it up. Good evening Vanessa what a great interesting vlog and full of fellow vlogers to greet and help u, beautiful evening scenes as u rowed down the river for the otter spotting cruise but I'm glad u did manage to see one even if it was the next day. After taking a turn for the worst and 5 days in bed l almost 4got it was Friday and nearly missed u🙄, I've got the sensitive scalp nerves and bad headaches still but some things don't heal that fast so I've been told. I learned a long time ago to never say 'this is perfect.' Life took a real spiral after me saying that but one chapter finishes another starts. Though look at the community that came to help you!! You and Fran I would say would be on a similar wavelength. The weed would make great compost, the river trust could compost and sell it? Otters, like river meerkats, cute and sleek through the water. We used to see otters regularly when we were moored on the Little Ouse. We found the best time was around 05.30 in the spring and summer. Got up one morning after it had snowed and our pontoon was covered in otter footprints - and long ‘scrapes’ in the snow from their tails

Congrats too to Mr M for reconnecting the drive shaft to the gear box, it is a potentially catastrophic event, because as the prop slips backwards it fouls the rudder too so you loose steerage as well as forward momentum. Im with Brewster Vanessa, the photography in this vlog was awesome...the golden glows on the sides of the NB's so beautiful. The sunsets on the water. Even the pesky weed looked really pretty...Is the little wooden boat (dingy) new, I dont remember seeing it before. Have you ever been to Amersham? My GGGGG Grandfathers were the "Wellers" of Amersham and High Wycombe who established the brewery there. A museum is there with their photos and legacy. They owned 1,000s of acres in the area 151 pubs- 9 of which are still operating! My Grandfather's brother sold his shares of the brewery and with his sons set sail for N.Z...establishing the Weller Whaling supply company in Otago. The TikTok and CZcams song "Wellerman" that went viral just recently is my family's song! 😃 Sure would love to see a video on that area...🥰 I believe the Chesham moorage is 3.5m from Amersham?

If the prop issue was the bolts needing tightening between the propshaft and the coupling, then get new nylock nuts or it will happen again, and the slipping will permanently damage your propshaft.

Now, I shall answer your amazing questions:
1. We saw Alice Grace advertised at Aston Marina and I really liked the pictures on the website. We drove 3.5 hours to take a look at her. We walked through once and then drove off to look at two more boats, but Alice Grace was all we could think about. We put an offer in and bought her; three months later, we were going to the marina every other weekend, straight from a long week at work to spend a couple of days on her. She was already in the water, so no craning in was required. We were lucky as this was before Covid and the steel price increase.
2. We have not had to add any insulation but as is often the case with steel boats on the water, the woodwork like door and window frames is in need of some TLC which we are planning to do soon.
3. The transition to boat life has not been a problem, but we have adapted and changed things that we have done along the way. Life throws challenges at you wherever you live and boat life is no different; the difference for us is that we love this way of life and so that makes overcoming hurdles easier, I think.
4. Wifi is really important as my teaching work is all online and now that I make vlogs, I also need a good speed to upload to CZcams. We have a big mast on the roof linked to a Huawei box which covers the 3 network, I also use my phone to hotspot as this is O2 and recently we found that both were not so reliable on the Chesterfield so we bought a little EE box which we put in the window and top up when we need it. This one is back up for when the other two fail as the other two are much cheaper.
5. Doctor and dentist: I was very honest ( big mistake) with my GP and told them that I would be CCing in a narrowboat, but could I please stay with them for my asthma checkups and medicines?They struck me off.
I now use the guest patient system which means that you walk into the nearest GP, register as a visitor ( it takes about 16 days) but mine took less recently and then you can see a GP and get medicines. My dentist is private in Essex and I would never leave them as getting a dentist now is very, very difficult, so I book check ups for when I go to see family that live nearby the dentist, and I have stopped eating sweets!🤭
6. Post: Post is mainly sent to family or post restante services at post offices that we will be arriving to.
7. Electrical items: We limit the amount of electrical items that we use and certain things like hairdryers, you just cannot use unless you have a generator. If we buy something, we look for lower voltage use or USB chargeable items. Recently, I bought an electrical bread oven which runs if the solar is good or when we are cruising. There is a panel on the wall which shows us how many volts of electricity that we have coming in and when this drops to 12v, we start adapting usage or run the engine to get it back up again.
