  • Don't burn up your antenna because the rating of the power on CW is at 50 Watts for the N-Fed antenna you might be using when the radio is misleading at 100 watts when you see the letters. HF PWR In the settings on page 16.03 on the menu.
This video will help you to do that correctly right away instead of hunting. I hope you don't burn up an antenna like I did and I'm glad that yezu messed up in their wording. it's really an error on their part. I wish that they would pay for the antenna I just purchased to replace this scenario because of improper identifying that is for CW. Have a blessed day

The power settings on the FT-891 are confusing and the most misunderstood. I have seen HAMs get in heated debates over them. When I first got my FT-891 I was confused and finally read the manual. This poorly labeled menu item needs to be updated. Thanks for the MUCH needed video explanation.

Thanks for tip. I operate battery powered and 100watts kills battery too quickly.

Thank you for this most informative video. I would be getting my brand new FT-891 within Christmas and your video is very helpful. I am aware that the menus are very cryptic and as you said I shall first learn to adapt to it. MeNwhilw, I look forward to your next video on MI gain settings.
    Thank you again!

Appreciate your video, Dom. I was wrestling with this all afternoon yesterday as a new 891 owner. The menus are a bit cryptic and perhaps not intuitive but if one buys the rig, one must take the time to learn. Think of it as the firmware engineers giving you the ability to reprogram the firmware on the fly.

100% agree it could have been much better labelled

I don't use the power level as a set and forget option as is implied by burying the setting deep in a menu, I want to press a button marked "power" and turn a knob to be able to adjust it at will, if only because I don't like to tune at high power.

The whole menu system in the 891 is poorly organized and cryptic. It probably made sense to some Japanese engineer, but lost a lot in translation.

Most Antenna Maybe Rated 100 SSB
      Not 100 CW.
My EFHW Is Rated @100 SSB
      50 CW
Many Different MFG Rate Them Differently.
