Chris Harris Drives the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N | An EV with a Sense of Humour

- Until now, the new Hyundai IONIQ 5 N has been confined to its native Korea, but Chris Harris went to Sydney Motorsport Park to get behind the wheel for a proper shakedown on track. Would it be enough to change his mind on just how involving an electric vehicle can be?
The IONIQ 5 N is based on the now-familiar large ‘crossover’ hatchback, but features a strengthened body shell, and a fully revised chassis with more robust subframes and larger dampers. Most significantly, the electric motors produce up to 641HP and 568lb-ft of torque in boost mode, enabling a 0-62mph sprint time of just 3.4 seconds.
Not only that, but Hyundai’s engineers also went to work on the controls, improving the response and feedback through the wheel ahead of the driver, giving it - in Chris’ own words - “really, really good electric steering”. With a substantial mass not only to move but also to stop, it’s no surprise to find 400mm discs at the front and 360mm items at the rear, aided by improved cooling and a recalibrated regen system.
As the marque’s first high-performance EV, how does it stack up to electric models being produced by the likes of Porsche or Audi? And with so much space and pace, could it really be considered a worthy rival for the petrol-powered RS6 Avant? Watch the film to find out what Chris thought after driving this landmark electric car on track.

Bloody hell Chris you missed to show the active sound and simulated gear shifts! That is really what I wanted to see your reaction on, is it just a useless gimmick or is it actually exciting????
my thoughts exactly! but look how much he enjoyed it even without the fun little mini-game of the simulated shifting! at worst you just don't use it and still have a grand time haha
where the car sounds like a 1999 gran turismo game lol 😂 the try way to hard to be a combustion engine eventough it isn’t and it das from it in any way.. it’s like making engine sounds with your mouth 🤦♂️
And the clutch kick simulator
Go to 2:32 u can see on the dash the simulated gears
He probably would simulate the feeling too
Harris... How could you miss the emulated 8 speed transmission feature?! I dont often say this but... DA HELL MAN!!!! Thats what we were all here to see! 😂
I was waiting for him to explain why the Speedo was loading up gear changes 😂 Now I'm pretty sure it's a useless future for him to flat out ignore it.
Exactly. I really wanted to hear his thoughts because so far it seems like almost everyone absolutely LOVES it.
+1. And the engine noise... maybe Chris had jetlag?
I actually preferred that he didn't mention that. It felt like the many great aspects of the car were being overshadowed because of that.
@@loveyoumaxin what the hell are you smoking?! It’s an enthusiast car for enthusiasts as such being the first production electric car with a virtual 8 speed transmission and torque curve is a big deal. Fact that such a stand out feature was omitted is not good!
“In a Hyundai”
“In a Kia”
No need to keep being shocked at these two, they have proven themselves to be a big game changer and have stepped up massively in the automotive world, they make awesome cars now, the old days of the 90s and early 2000s when these were considered a joke are now a point in history that has long gone.
Had my Ioniq 5 awd a couple of years now, still the best car I've owned, and that is already a quick car, I love this N version, the wife will never let me have one though 😂
RS6 prices have become insane, £180k for a limited edition for some stickers and white rims 😂
Thats a fantastic red white and black colour scheme, has 4x4, huge front intercooler and gets rave reviews. Oh, sorry, I thought you said the new limited edition GR Yaris !
I'd have that rather than the hyundai but still good that they have tried to put some fun into electric. Unless you are Chris though not sure 2.2 tonnes being hooned on the road in rwd mode is that socially responsible. Could be a big square hole in that B road hedge and very long tracks through the farmers field :)
You won't be laughing when the next one is a 2 litre turbo, ask the C63 guys 😂
Many parts of the new RS6 is hand built, thats why. Just small things like the hatch etc. Its also got coil over suspension, with toolkit to change it for the track your going to. and more I rather spend 180k on the RS6 than anything on this Ioniq5N :P edit. and the RS6 is faster both in 0-100, and topspeed (I know Chris say this is faster than the RS6, but the official 0-100 for Audi is 3.3 sec, and for this 3.4, and topspeed is for Audi 305km/h unlocked / 280 locked, and 260 for the Ioniq5.
@@AndrewTSq I think you would buy it just for the fact that it has an engine 😂🤣 and I'm cool with that
@@sexpistill yeah!, the older one with the V10 is even better cause of the engine sound in my opinion.
First EV that ive seen that i can say "Ye I'd have one of those"
Taycan was the first where I was like "Damn that's awesome I want it" but this is the first one I could feasibly own that I actually want lol
how much is it? I saw prices around 100k
@@microfx Yeah it is like 100k, I was wrong when I said I could feasibly own one lol maybe one day...
Can't wait to see my guy drift this beast
Edit: Request for Chris redo the review, how could the engineers not inform him of simulated gears and Active Sound THAT DEFINES this car?! This is insane to me
The fact that he said it's better than an RS6 even without that is wild. I'm pretty sure it's also a lot cheaper too.
@@iSOBigD £65k.
drifting is more important than windowdressing like noise or trans simulation
I love how Chris is at 90 degrees but just chatting away to the camera as if he is driving down a high street. Very talented driver, and amazing to watch. Always engaging.
Strange how the weaker sex ends up controlling your life!
The IONIQ 5N is the only electric vehicle that can run on the track without stopping. Tesla, Porsche, Audi, and BMW will rather analyze the IONIQ 5N. And what's even more surprising is that Hyundai hasn't even brought out a real weapon yet. The eM platform, the successor to the E-GMP platform, is scheduled to appear. There will be many more great techniques, so you can look forward to it.
Tesla is straight garbage. Don't even put it in the same category as those other cars. They make appliance cars for point A to point B travel with the cheapest trash materials that make people feel ashamed everytime they step into it.
Taycan can’t track without stopping??? Halve the amount of shrooms in your morning coffee my guy, and rewatch the review for this weapon Harris did. Hyundai? Puhleez 😂
@@namesdemeanusboth9568 Stop being such a tribalist. You lost the moment you made this about Hyundai and not Ioniq 5N. You bring no substance to the discussions since you don't care about facts or logic. You care about what badge is on the car and the car with the badge you like, no matter how poor it is, is the winner for you. Plastic.
@@namesdemeanusboth9568 The Taycan and Model S Plaid must be equipped with extremely expensive carbon ceramic brakes to run on the track, and there are also problems with battery overheating. However, the Ioniq 5N can be stopped with just cast iron brakes, and the battery heat dissipation ability is excellent. In addition, the IONIQ 5N's regenerative braking is limited to 0.6G, and the specification is possible up to 0.8G. There is great industrial value in being able to build much better electric vehicles without the use of expensive brakes.
I love the standard version of this car, so this hot one is just wicked as far as my humble opinion is concerned. So much to admire about what Hyundai are doing here 😋
I appreciate Hyundai injecting bonkers fun on the Ioniq 5. Been admiring the normal one from afar (test drives on it is hard to line up for, everyone likes it!)
I feel like this review only scratched the surface of the 5N. Would love to see him talk about stuff like what it's like on the road or when you're trying to set a fast lap on a circuit
Nice to see you at our local Sydney track
I got the blue one yesterday and I love it. Very fun to drive.
Very fun! When was the last time you said that in a EV. Luv the matte blue on mine even though she says it’s Barbie blue…. Where did that come from?
Outro song is - Gimme Noize by Jailed Jamie , Antic Mass , for those looking.
Wicked car. HMG is doing a great job
I have been waiting for this kind of thing to come along, the moment it changes from boring EV to fun. Good on Hyundai for having a crack at it, and succeeding it seems. Chris giving proper acknowledgement to how this changes his mind again. Cracking car and cracking video.
I bought a fully specified Cupra Born as it was as close to a drivers car as I could get in a EV at the time and I love it. But if I had the money for one of these Hyundai Ioniq 5 N’s I would get one in a flash. Nice drive around our Sydney circuit.
Haha mentioning the first left hander being a potentially crashy corner. There has definitely been some big ones there.
You can actually see the tread being deleted from the rear wheels as he drifts! So dope!! 🤩
Wanted one ever since I saw the first drive and the numbers of this thing 6 months ago - it’s super rapid
Got one on order coming in May, can’t wait
Oh, you're the one are you. Good luck with your new milk float.
Also got one on order, have to wait till September though. 😃
Wow they are arriving in May :O
Rich man
To well off people $70k really is nothing.
Yeah, it might be fun and all that, but, being a lover of coupes etc, iiiiiiiii LOVE the N Vision '74... THAT looks AWESOME! 😏😉👌 I just wish Hyundai WOULD release an everyday street version of it (EXACT same design (ok maybe not with that wing), but just an every day 'Drivers car' version!
😎🇬🇧
They are
@@edsgarage001 Yeah but they're only making 100 of them with 30 reserved for racing which unfortunately means only 70 will be for sale. Kind of hard to consider that an "everyday street version" but still cool I guess
If Harris says it’s good…. That’s good enough for me
Did not have a Hyundai being "more dynamic than an RS6" on my 2024 bingo card, I think a lot of the European and US manufacturers should be worried about what Kia/Hyundai are bringing
Really? Never heard about I20 or I30N?
The Veloster N has already won Road&Track Performance Car of the Year award back in 2020.
They already have been quietly noticing them. Just not willingly admitting it.
The rs6 is overrated, audi aren't fun to drive, i bet the m3 is on another league
Hyundais and Kias are trash underneath

Nailed it, that HAS to be their inspiration.
It looks great in martini stripes, a few out there if you google it
if Lancia would have swollen a full sized SUV.. if not, no, no chance!
@@eugenux True but I wasn't really including scale, just aesthetics. Plus everything has got bigger. The modern Minis and Fiat 500s are huge next to their 60's inspirations. I find it crazy that the Integrale was a mid size hatchback when it was new but today it's comparable in size to superminis such as the Toyota Yaris.
Nice video please review it again with in the simulation modes, it's so much more than sound.
Love it, super stoked to see all the reviews on this Ioniq N
Totally unrelated Chris but I've just finished listening to your audio book and absolutely loved it, top bloke 👍
Hope you enjoyed Australia mate 🍻🇦🇺🦘
This is one of thos Game Changer cars that dont often come along. Just watch other manufacturers start copying the very same tech in their hatch backs.
The focus on human emotion rather than technology is what defines this car. No it isn’t perfect, but in time hopefully other OEMs take this approach too and create a new kind of sports cars that do not alienate users for being ‘too human’.
Completely agree. Theyve looked at what connects the driver to the car and have seemingly done a really decent job given the platform.
Its more than just a fast fridge!
@@SteYoungit’s a fast fridge with silly colors. There is no emotion in this even if they try to fake them, the real connection between an ice car and the driver comes through the vibration mechanical parts have between them and the sound they make when working properly, that is what electric cars and the majority of cars nowadays will never give you.
@@fabioribeiro5071 Yes i know but least theyre trying to increase the engagement and thus the connection. Irs never going to be the same as sitting behind the wheel of a special ice car with all the visceral drama but given that EVs are sadly the future I jave to applaud what Hyundai are trying to do here. Its possibly the most driver focused ev yet.
Love this man! Makes drifting look sooo easy!! Bravo!! 💪
Been waiting for you to review this Chris to get a proper driver’s view. Really want one of these (and as a petrolhead - also have the 1M coupe which I believe Chris you also have?). What did you make of the simulated gear change?
I can''t tell if he's going fast or slow unless its drifting.
I like the video style, it reminds me of your old films, not the fake speed shaky camera style of top gear. Thank you!!
Have I seen you in a green GT3 RS going back to the UK at LeShuttle last Sunday? I was confused. Or you have a good look a like 😊
yes turn 1 is a scary one. There's an old video floating around of one of the Toyota Group C cars, I think the V10-powered TS010, taking it pretty much flat. I'd definitely NOT have the intestinal fortitude to do that

@@trstnhn bloody ell! Someone’s doing extremely well!!! A normal EV like a Hyundai Kona is half that price brand new.. £35k so yes $70k is still a LOT of money. Silly boy
Thank you for NOT pushing the „active sound“ button!
77k Euro is just a bargain compared to Audi, MB, BMW, etc. The range and the infamous German charging network is the only thing which at this point would bring me to a no-buy decision.
I genuinely daunted by the idea of having all this weight in a car this size. This was large ladder frame chassis 4wd of a few years ago.
What we need is cheap, light and fun cars, not 650HP on 2.200KG at 80.000€
Yeah, an "Ioniq 2.5" would be amazing. Half the power, half the size, half the weight, half the cost, all the fun. I'm sure it'll be here eventually, but until then this is the closest thing we have to an EV hot hatch.
Thank you! Stupid expensive heavy ugly
Look on social media - people complain when expensive EV’s only do 150 miles 🤔🤣
This is heavy because it has the battery capacity to do 300 miles (when driven steady)
Not gonna happen. The manufacturers are going to keep building them heavy. They have to in order to fit them with big batteries. Need a big battery so that the EV can perform its party trick, accelerating in a straight line. Why else would you want a car with extremely limited range and practicality?
Hyundai will follow the upcoming Kia ev3 with their own version. And maybe those will get a gt or gt line and N line versions in 25 or 26?
Turn 1 at Sydney Motorsport Park has caught out some big names. On a bike it’s super tricky and dangerous!
I'd really like to see your take on the Hiphi Z. I've been driving one on winter roads, and it's another expensive EV with a sense of humour. And although I'm not huge on EV's, I'm rather impressed with the way it drives! Sort of reminds me of a scaled up, modern gt3000. It's also got more entertaining features than Mario-Party, so it pleases the geek in me!
Great to have the great man in Oz.

As long as you don't have a pacemaker you are good to go. Seriously We were told that on the electric car course I attended .
You forgot to mention that this course was not about driving an electric car but about servicing the motors which contain strong magnets.

which would you have for daily....Ionic 6, or Mustang GT 5.0?
I don't think we really realise what this car achieves: Porsche, Audi, BMW, AMG,... all already had a go on sporty/fun EVs but it's Hyundai, that actually managed to deliver.
I'm really curious to see US pricing and what kind of lease deals can be had once supply builds up. Need a family car soon to replace my 911 and very intrigued by this.
There won't be a supply build up, ever. Every N model has been super hard to get allocations for in the US and this won't be any different.
The better question is will it depreciate like the EV6 GT. 1 year old models with a few thousand miles can he had for low $40k. The EV6 isn't as thorough of a sports car as this though, so we'll see what happens.
Lease will be the best way to go for EV especially high end ones. Think it will start at barely sub $70k, not including the mark ups it is going to get. And depreciation should be >40-50% for 3 years ownership.
I'm leasing it.
@iRapplexD I'm a finance manager at a Hyundai/Genesis dealership. Leasing any N model is awful. The money factor and lack of rebates on N cars make leasing them a bad choice. If we're talking normal Ioniq5/Ioniq6, yes lease it.
@@jshnya EV oversupply is a huge industry-wide problem right now impacting all models. OEMs and dealers are literally losing tens of thousands of $ on every one they sell, and it's only getting worse as production continues to ramp at ~50% per year. N cars are readily available, at least in the US atleast.
This will have a terrible depreciation curve like every current EV currently due to many reasons, but a big part is how rapidly they continue to improve, making older ones obsolete.
@@iRapplexD 100%, should definitely only lease any EV right now due to the market dynamics and tax credit. And we are just at the beginning of years of EV oversupply and wild depreciation - the production ramp through 2027 is insane.

I really want to see some real world comparisons to get a gauge on just how fast and capable this is. From everything Ive read and watched it is a genuine brilliantly capable and bloody fun EV.
Just wouldnt mind seeing it up against some well known performance benchmarks. BMW M3 Xdrive, Audi RS4 or 6, Kia EV6 GT. Model 3 Performance. Taycan 4S or Turbo. Just to see where the 5N sits.
I wonder if the reason this package gets such enthusiasm from the likes of Chris filters down from the Hyundai EV rally program?
