  • The Coleman Sundome is an excellent family camping tent. In this video we provide a Coleman Sundome rain test, a Coleman Sundome storm test and a Coleman Sundome tent review in order to determine if the Coleman Sundome is among the best waterproof tents for camping. So how does the Coleman Sundome tent review stack up? During the Coleman Sundome rain test we had 2.5 inches of heavy rain fall over 4 hours with winds up to 30mph. Specifically we completed a Coleman Sundome 4-person tent rain test, but can assume that the 6 person and the two person would have similar tent storm rain test results. The Coleman Sunsome storm test was a success, no tent leaks, no moisture and no structural failures of the Coleman Sundome Tent were observed during the tent rain tests. If you are heading out in a Coleman tent in storm, you can rest assure you will stay dry while camping in the Coleman Sundome.
    The Coleman Sundome comes in three sizes: Coleman Sundome 2-person tent , Coleman Sundome 4-person tent and the Coleman Sundome 6-person tent. The 4 and 6 person tents are available in dark room technology options as well. In terms of waterproof tents for camping, the Coleman Sundome is one of the best waterproof tents on a budget. It's wide availability and ease of set up make the Coleman Sundome an appealing family camping tent option for both beginner camping adventurers and veteran campers. The Coleman Sundome Tent review score for this tent was high based on the Coleman Sundome's performance in the Coleman Sundome rain tent which saw heavy sustained rain and high winds. The Sunsome is a great Coleman tent. Check out the Coleman Tent rain test for a complete story of how this Coleman tent performed in the storm!

    I got a Coleman Sundome 4 person tent some time around 2005. One time I went camping with it near a lake and there were severe thunderstorms in the weather forecast. The forecast was accurate. This tent was my only shelter against high winds, heavy wind-driven rain, thunder and lightning. If I were to guess, I'd say the wind was around 40-45 mph with gusts even higher at times. I was inside with the tent poles moving back and forth in the wind and the very loud, continuous sound of rain pounding against the fly and sides of the tent. I was pretty nervous that the tent would fail at any moment, but it stood strong and not a single drop of that wild rain got inside. I still have and use that tent now. I would not hesitate to recommend the Coleman Sundome tents to anyone looking for a very good value and some peace of mind when sleeping outdoors, miles from home.

    This video is the only one that set up the tent completely. I wanted to see how the door mat was placed. I couldn't find any info on the door mat in the Coleman instruction. This person was the most knowledgeable on the tent. Most of the other videos the people, or person, was winging it for the first time.

    Thank you for this review. I’m currently sleeping in this exact tent that’s sleeps 6. It is raining very hard currently 3am. My man is sleeping cozy next to me while I’m freaking out if this is going to leak. We have all our stuff in here including my suitcase, purse etc…. I got very nervous, but it is dry in here. Now with this video I realize I can hop back in bed & relax knowing it will not leak. I got this bed for $80 at BJS FYI.

    The Coleman 6 person tent is a classic tent with a new twist. You know you trust Coleman tents as they have always delivered very good tents over the decades they have made them. My first tent was a Coleman 2 person A frame with air vents on each side.used the tent for 10years through out the 1970s and 80s .always worked very well. 2 weeks ago I bought the Coleman 6 person sun dome tent,can't wait to try it out.

    We have this tent; the space inside, ability to actually stand up and have enough room to move and store essentials is EXCELLENT.
    The ventilation is also excellent;
    It does have what I CONSIDER a BAD flaw; The -- RAIN FLY ---- it is water proof, works just like she is showing in the down poor BUT-- The BAD design of the Rain fly --NOT EXTENDING
    MUCH further DOWN THE SIDES-- it IS IMPERATIVE in RAIN-- that the rain water SHED down and OUT FURTHER --- from the TENT! We have camped MANY times in the rain and rain has come in the FRONT window-- a DIRECT result of the FRONT AND BACK of the rain fly -- NOT extending FAR ENOUGH.
    The WATER that she does NOT SHOW-- from the heavy rain that goes OFF THE RAIN FLY-- DOES AND WILL go VERY close AND UNDER your tent-- yes, you should have a TARP under your tent,
    BUT -- if the Rain Fly-- extended ALMOST to the bottom of the side of the tent--- as it DOES in BETTER tents --- you WILL see the water STAY further away FROM your tent NOT CONTINUALLY HIT
    the PRIMARY SIDES of your tent -- then go UNDER your tent! This ALL causes a damp feeling after a while!
    A GOOD Rain Fly will ACT like a SHELL OVER your primary parts of your tent -- this ALSO acts as a DOUBLE WALL-- that is THAT much MORE protection from rain AND COLD!
    I can NOT emphasize enough the IMPORTANCE of the Rain Fly going down much further on the SIDES! WATER WILL SEEP under your tent AND your TARP!
    Also-- to make this tent better-- they SHOULD have ADDED a VESTIBULE like EXTENSION - on the FRONT of the tent-- that could be staked down EVEN as you stake the corners down-- then you could KEEP boots and other item OUTSIDE -yet under the vestibule!
    LASTLY--- it NEEDS (really!!!) ALUMINUM POLES -- NOT fiberglass-- as they WILL SPLIT!
    MAKING THE sides of the rain fly LONGER down the sides, more material to make a vestibule type cover to keep boots and more safely outside your tent and-- extend the rain fly 2 or 3 more inches on the FRONT and BACK--- this would also mean a LITTLE longer rain fly pole( from ALUMINUM-- not fiber glass) would make this THEE tent to have for camping, it would be fantastic!
    This tent has a LOT of potential! It has room, easy to put up, great ventilation, light weight, GREAT water proofing ( except for the SERIOUS rain fly issue)!
    Coleman could up the price , for the upgrade in items and design I mentioned and people would understand and pay for what would be EASY CHANGES!

    • @LoneCrowAdventures
      @LoneCrowAdventures  Před 2 lety +1

      I agree? A ground tarp is needed for heavy rain and I'm not a huge fan of the canopy style of rainfly.

    • @livableincome
      @livableincome Před 2 lety

      Great comment! I have two great tents that have rain flies that go lower and out. The Tofino 4 and the Hornby 6. Took the Hornby 6 to Hornby Island last summer. Monsoon rains. That tent held up beautifully. Only problem is it is windowless. But does have a nice big vestibule where we actually use a full standing coat rack, shelves and a tall porta potty for middle of the night urgencies. LOVE this tent. Hope they make one with windows at some point.
      Writing you from the "Wet Coast" of Canada. You are very right. Dome tents are best here.

    • @karinec.8037
      @karinec.8037 Před 4 dny

      Exactly what we think of this tent every time it rains... it is perfect if you don't have to go outside! The door is bad shaped too, too high... so it is a bit too high for me to open, but worse, when door is opened, water slides from the top and can enter deeply in the tent.
      Do you have a tip for the rain dome? I can't fix it correctly, there is still contact between rain dome and internal tent near the top, so there are leaks...😢

    Nice review Samantha. I was surprised at the tent's effectiveness of shedding water and staying dry--absolutely impressed. The price point puts this high on my list for the occasional car camper that wants a functional tent. I get your point (-1 for the awning design), but for the price, don't you need to add a +1 to make it a 5/5? Well, maybe the crow rating scale doesn't work that way... anyway, take care.

    I have 3 Colman tents one 8 man cabin tent one 2 man sundome and one 6 man tent. I got both sundoms on Amazon used I picked used because they goto Colman USA for any repairs and replacing missing parks they bring it up to standards. You see most of Colman products are nit made in China and i think is not up to Colman's standards we expect but used tents sold by Colman on Amazon are much better then the new tents because of the refitting at Colman USA after the tent is fixed up they even put it in a new box then they send it to Amazon storage for resell. I have has no problems only thing I has to replace the stakes because I live in Florida and the ground is sandy so i need steaks that can hold up. As for high winds if stake down well and tight no problems have had it in 50+ mph wind gusts (note I use extra parachute chord and vary strong stakes to tie it down in bad weather) in vary heavy thunderstorms no water in side and tent has no rips love my tents. But the best thing about buying a used Colman on Amazon is its cheaper I saved $30 dollars over a new tent.

      This is a pretty solid tent as long as it's not windy on the mountain. If you expect wind I'd go with the XT because the rsinfly comes all the way down to the ground and is less likely to be taken in wind. I don't know that the XT is still in stock though. 🤔

    What was the temperature outside? Was there enough cross breeze/ air flow with the rain guard on? Was it hot in there? We are considering this tent for a trip coming up. This is the best review of this tent in my opinion. Thank you for making this video!

      @LoneCrowAdventures  Před 3 lety +4

      It was in high 70s, low 80s. You do want to try to angle the door towards a breeze, but the tent vents fairly well. It can get hot though when there is no air movement, just due to limited mesh on the inside of this tent.

    Great review on both the sun dome and cabin tents im thinking now which one to get the cabin design but also the simplicity of a dome tent. Just upgrading from my Coleman canvas cabin tent fro. The 80s. I seasoned it yearly but showing wear now.. Your feedback would be excellent to hear.. 62 n still camping solo.. but want space in the tent im thinking 6man either way..

    I saw your review of the pop- up by Coleman and your problem with the zipper ripping. That honest observation made me walk away from the pop-up and on to this Dome tent. Very pleased.
    Can you describe an extra, maybe canapy - type covering that I can stake in, over my tent and my cot-tent, 🔥 together under one roof? Is there such a thing?

      The problem with canopies is that they perform very poorly even in light winds. I'd recommend a good bushcraft tarp and use of two trekking poles at the front of your cot tent. Here is a link for a decent budget friendly bushcraft tarp. amzn.to/2VE0mmB they also make a telescoping pole set for this tarp as well in case you are interested. amzn.to/3jurnkB

      They need to stop pushing so many Chinese made goods and bring the manufacturing process back to the USA. Just look at the shipping crisis, the breakdown in supply chain and availability of goods since c19 and associated shortages. There is no reason this tent cannot be manufactured here in the USA. Charge me like $20 more or even $30 more for a domestically produced product. @colemanusa

    Thoughts on Colemans dark room technology? Does it actually keep the tent cooler during the day? Looking at buying a Sundome but wasn't sure if I wanted the darkroom one or just one like this one!

      Yes, the Darkroom technology works extremely well. I did a review of the Darkroom 10p cabin tent and the Darkroom feature works fantastic! I wasn't wild about the rainfly design on the 10p and that tent had some issues with stability, but the Darkroom technology works fabulous! Hood luck!

    • @LoneCrowAdventures
      @LoneCrowAdventures  Před 3 lety

      One of the bad things about this tent is that the awning cannot be collapsed. You could take out the support pole but then it would hang in the doorway. I'm not sure how it handles snow. I'd be worried about ventilation in this tent in cold temps though. Ventilation is fine in summer and fall but in winter I'd be concerned.

    • @LoneCrowAdventures
      @LoneCrowAdventures  Před 3 lety

      Yes, the sundome has a triangular peaked roof. The skydome has an arching angled roof (flatter on the top) which gives this tent slightly more headroom inside the tent. Hope that helps.

    Water resistant? Sun dome gets better reviews than sun dome dark room so trying to figure out why? Also thoughts on sundome vs Skydome

    • @LoneCrowAdventures
      @LoneCrowAdventures  Před rokem

      The big difference between the sun dome and the skydome is the shape of the rainfly. From a water shedding perspective there is little difference. The dark room and the regular sundome are made of the same material, just different colors. The dark room is VERY dark during the day so it's great if you like to sleep in or if you have to put kids to bed early.
