Well done explaining a complicated topic! New subscriber here. I recently flew UA LAX-AKL and BNE-LAX, but I used AC miles to redeem. I’m guessing I would not have been able to take advantage of this perk for a free middle segment because I didn’t redeem with UA miles. Is that right? I’ll watch for more videos. Thx!
Yes, that’s right! To take advantage of the Excursionist Perk, you have to book through United, but interestingly, you don’t have to exclusively fly United. Their partner airline flights also count, as long as you book all segments through United. Hope this helps!

It works the same way no matter where you’re trying to book it, as long as United or one of their partner airlines flies there 😊
