    He's a good engineer for two reasons: 1) he shows you his mixing technique w/ a reference track present (humble man, A+++ in my book), 2) his approach to mixing is simplistic; there's no redundant gear name-dropping, over-the-top self-praise, and unnecessary jargon that just comes off as 'doing too much' as a engineer/teacher...DOPE, he's got my respect and my full attention. Cheers, mate! Real engineers appreciate you!

    Hey thanks for this... you should also mention one crucial thing about saturation and modern mixing, and that is gain staging and perceived loudness. Saturating snare or kick a little bit can make them sound even louder and fuller while reducing peaks by 3 or more dB... meaning more headroom and less pumping on the master buss compressor. This was really a game changer for me when I discovered it.

    I also thought, why don't you make it a little bit over the top

    oops ... you are doing just that on 8 minutes :-) sorry.

    This may be the best saturation video I've ever seen! I'm actually looking for plugins to replace the Fabfilter Saturn & Pro-L2. They are a bit too complicated, and the Saturn's 4 band EQ is too much "power" to work with. I like to keep it simple, while still getting results. I like your style of going until it makes a noticeable difference & then backing it off a bit.

    one of the biggest misconceptions about saturation is that you emulate it with a "saturation" plugin and toggle the wet/dry as desired. its not a very good way to think about it. to understand saturation you have to have context of what signal flow is. the real saturation comes when you emulate each stage of the signal flow. how was the beat made? traditionally samples coming from vinyl going to a channel of a mixer track, then probably the master of that mixer, then its being processed with analog eq's and such, then its going into a drum machine, then its going out of a drum machine into a console and out the console master bus. emulate each stage.

    • @drmedwuast

      The drive is the amount of saturation. (Was that your question?)

    • @PuppySupreme
      @PuppySupreme Před 4 lety

      drmedwuast kinda, so the drive is the actual amount of the effect pushed into the sound whereas mix is like the volume of that sound?

      @drmedwuast Před 4 lety +2

      @@PuppySupreme
      "Mix" in this case is a special function, where you can use the unsaturated signal alongside the saturated signal.
      In other words, you run the saturated signal in parallel to the original sound. The "Mix" knob lets you decide how much of each signal you want to hear.
