    danielle: a bilingual Australian-Korean who has lived in both Korea and Australia as a kid, is comfortable switching between languages
    hanni: a Vietnamese-Australian who is still learning Korean, so she actively speaks in Korean and switches to English when she’s emotional or when she doesn’t know the words
    minji: a Korean who is interested in learning languages (English, Japanese), has lived in Canada for a few months, so she actively speaks in English as practice (kinda similar to hanni), her grammar isn’t perfect but her pronunciation is good and more importantly she isn’t afraid to make mistakes (bc practice is the best way to study any language afterall)
    haerin and hyein: both Korean who aren’t as fluent in English as the others but can still understand them and converse in both languages in a casual setting, haerin speaks less English bc she doesn’t talk much in general😅

    Danielle and Minji’s case are great examples of Translanguaging. It goes beyond just code-switching back and forth between languages. The intention, interplay and nuances of how they freely use these languages is what makes their self-expressions so unique.
    It’s sad that many English teachers discourage learners to use their first language. If you can translanguage like New Jeans, it actually shows how fluent you are!

    This was incredibly interesting and so well done. I do wonder how their code switching would differ considering a larger range of environments. For example, I think if we included their livestreams on Phoning, Hanni would probably take the top spot, as when she says something in english/korean during a livestream, she often will translate what she said into the other language. Not sure how much it would affect the data but it's an observation I had that I thought was interesting.

    I thought Hanni would use it 2nd most but less than Danielle at 1st for the reasons you gave. I assumed Hanni actively tries to speak Korean as opposed to English for learning purposes so itd be less switches than Danielle who was already fluent in both from childhood.

    I had a feeling Haerin would be last.. considering how much of an introvert she really is. What caught my attention the most is how she listens to english then responds in Korean. while it is her native language, it’s super impressive to be able to interpret another language and respond in your own with complete coherency. She is by far the most interesting and unique member of the 5, while they all have their own charms, she’s just.. i dunno, she’s a mystery.

    • @skyofthelivingdead
      @skyofthelivingdead Před 9 měsíci +4

      I have the same issue since I’m also an introvert. I can understand and read Korean very well, but I’m a naturally quiet person and I don’t have any Korean friends to speak with, so I’m not very confident in my speaking abilities. I imagine that’s probably how it is for Haerin. It seems like she can understand and read English really well, she’s just not as confident in speaking. Suga from BTS and Tzuyu from Twice are two other idols I can think of like that as well. I’m starting to think it’s just an introvert problem universally 😂

    • @dyme917
      @dyme917 Před 9 měsíci

      @@skyofthelivingdead totally. I'm also like that with english yet i still have the guts to major it. Anyways, Minji being 2nd wasnt a surprise to me at all ahah, got it right. I feel like she's the one who code switches in the most ''intentional'' way, almost like she takes every opportunity and scenario to practice it. About her japanese, I heard she's going to take the N2 level exam, which is incredibly impressive seeing how that's the 2nd highest lvl of japanese proficiency and it means she has passed lvls 5, 4 and 3.

I grew up in Vietnam, moved to Melbourne since young I could speak fluently my mother tongue and English and use both languages comfortably daily to communicate with friends and family, switching back and forth naturally in convos. Also, the fact that they all understand and speak English well makes them so much more close and relatable to us international fans, knowing that we will be able to communicate with them in English if you ever have a chance to meet them in person like in a fanmeeting/fansign event.

    I noticed Haerin speaks more english in their Light Jeans vlogs probably because they're more "relaxed" kinda behind the scenes and not actually doing some challenges or having to do something for camera, like in the escape room video where the cameras aren't propped infront of her specifically. She speaks english a lot one on one with the members and probably just more comfortable like that.

    Those jeans zine episodes are a lot of fun to watch. Sadly though with how popular they have gotten, i dont forsee many more of these sort of episodes being filmed. Most if not all were filmed before OMG really blew up.

    I really enjoyed learning about this language code-switching with NewJeans. Not only are they all pretty, it’s clear they are very intelligent! They also work very hard to be the best they can be. Wonderful work ethic to have. They truly are so easy to relate to. I’ve always liked pop music growing up & still do. Lastly I genuinely enjoy hearing Min-ji speak Korean. Her voice really draws me in so strongly I can honestly say she makes me want to learn Korean. Thank you Ben for this excellent and informative video. I wish NewJeans great success always! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

    Haerin is really good at English, it's just that she doesn't prefer to speak English bcz Hyein finds it uncomfortable and not easy to communicate using English, and because of this, she doesn't want Hyein to feel left out from the entire group where the other three already speak fluent English and she doesn't want to join them yet. It's that simple.
