    I’d been to Hillsborough and stood on the Leppings lane terrace about 2 months before the disaster when my team Manchester United played Sheffield Wednesday. We got directed to the corner pen, the one by the banked terrace in the corner, because the central tunnel was closed off. This was about 2.40-2.45pm. We were on a good run of form at the time and we always took a lot of fans to Hillsborough back then so we probably had about 15,000 at the game. You could see where problems could occur. On the day of the disaster me and my Dad were standing on the Stretford end, watching United getting beaten by Derby County, and we heard bits and pieces about some trouble at the Hillsborough semi final by people with little radios. It wasn’t until we were on our way home that things became clearer. I always remember my Dad saying “ I bet it’s overcrowding at that bloody end where we were “. I’ll always remember him saying that. There had been problems at the previous 3 semi finals at that ground as well. The 1988 semi final, Liverpool fans wrote to the FA complaining of overcrowding on the Leppings lane terrace. One bloke said his umbrella snapped in half because the overcrowding was that bad. It was a death trap and hadn’t had a valid safety certificate since 1979.

    I'm an American who saw the horrific pictures back in 1989. I couldn't get it out of my mind. The disaster absolutely gutted and haunted me. I took the time to read about the victims and their families.
    Fast forward to 2015 when I happened upon information about the Independent Panel. I read every single page of their conclusion. I watched and waited for the end result of the inquiry in 2016. Yes, I cried like a baby.
    I've felt an affinity for Scousers since 1989. Decades later and from thousands of miles away, you will, I promise, never walk alone.

The lack of police presence and there simply just wasn't enough. The lack of coordination and the list goes on and on. Only partial justice has been done. And that was after the Hillsborough independent panel report in 2012 which exonerated the Liverpool supporters of any blame concerning the day of the disaster & that The South Yorkshire Police were to blame as were Sheffield Wednesday FC who never renued the safety licence after the 81 semi final where Tottenham fans were crushed And injured.
    And also the verdict that overturned the deaths as accident to unlawful killing as of 2021 to 97 people (Andrew Devine died after being on life support for over 30 years in July 2021) becoming the 97th victim.
    But still knowbody has ever been charged and help accountable for there actions on the day Super Intendant Duckenfield. Bernard Murray. SWFC club safety officer Mackrell. The list goes on. Oh and the sanitization of Police statements on what they did on the day. Many of the normal PC's were forced to change there statements of what they did that day or it was done without there knowledge and a lot of normal Bobbies did help on that day and suffered PTSD just like the Fans.
    Right from the start of the story of Liverpool fans breaking down Gate C when it was Duckenfield who ordered it to be opened was the beginning of the lie. And story's of drunken tickitless fans arriving at the ground late. Also the media reaction from the Camera men turning there cameras around from photographing the game to taking pictures of dead & dying people crushed up against the perimeter fences ignoring there cries & screams for help ,watching while people's faces turned white and lips And nostrils turned blue.
    And also in particularly The Sun Newspapers front page headlines about Liverpool fans pocketing the dead ,and assaulting Police officers and urinating on officers trying to help .An absolutely abhorrent and downright lies to smear the fans reputation and to sway public opinions on what they called " The Truth"
    What the Liverpool fans ,victims & family's got was only that the deaths were unlawful killings and that they were not to blame. This as well as being the longest running legal case in British history is also the BIGGEST cover up and injustice of the highest order. Superintendent Duckenfield should have gone to prison for this as quite a few other high ranking officers should of too. Duckenfield just escaped in the Private prosecution when the jury was hung (that's a 50/50 guilty/not guilty decision made by the dury) and has again I think in 2019 got off again.
    Please read the Hillsborough Independent Panel Report. It's available online to the public.
    I am not a Liverpool fan I support Carlisle United. And was 11 years old when the Hillsborough Disaster happened. It was my first year of watching Football and at the time being so young you know it's bad but are too young to understand it. And have your childhood to live. But ever since the 20th anniversary I've taken a real interest and watched just about ever documentary ,footage available. And also read Phil Scratons book "The Truth" and read the entire Independent Panel Report.
    As well as the survivors story's on the Hillsborough Disaster website that are more horrific than this video and harrowing to read.
    Without the shear determination of Professor Phil Scraton & later culture Secretary Andy Burnham (On the 20th anniversary) when Liverpool fans erupted into "Justice For tge 96" I doubt we would have had the Hillsborough Independent Panel..so huge respect to both men who fraught for the victims & family's justice.
    A lot of comments on this video like others are bigated , ignorant or darn right offensive. So before posting your comments do some proper research. And post something of value out of respect for the 97 dead. The victims family's who have fought tirelessly for justice. And those people who have died because of suicide or early deaths due to stress as there are many attributed to the worst sporting disaster in the UK and the BIGGEST misscarage of justice or injustice not only in England but in the entire world in sporting terms.
    It has nothing realy to do with Football anymore as times have changed and Hillsborough legacy is that we got safe all seated stadiums for the top two Leagues in English Football.
    But its about human lives ,normal , honest & hard working people who have loved ,lost ,suffered and fought tirelessly for JUSTICE For the 97.

    The most significant problems were
    1. That dividing the stand into pens combined with the narrow tunnel and the fence at front, basically turned the pen into a death trap with little to no escape.
    2. Look at every FA cup semifinal played at Hillsborough. For instance Coventry-Leeds 1987. That stand was far far beyond its actual capacity and should have been reduced or rebuilt.
    I have zero understanding for why the concept of standing terraces were at fault. You could technically achieve the same result in an elevator or a train just by having too many people in there. If you have a certain capacity with seats, you would get the exact same result by just having a standing terrace with the same capacity

      The 2 central pens capacity was 2,200 when they actually held about 1,600. That end of the ground, the Leppings lane end, hadn’t had a valid safety certificate since 1979.

    • @cjmillsnun
      @cjmillsnun Před rokem +2

      All seaters are safer. The capacity is reduced to the number of seats available. For example the Leppings Lane end supposedly (and I use that term very loosely because they didn't have a valid safety certificate after the pens were put in) had a capacity of 10,100 people. All seated it was 2,294.

    This bullsht about fans always causing trouble is one of the reasons why even more lives have been lost in football. Before Hillsborough, the Bradford City fire in 1985 saw people able (thank god) to get onto the pitch as there were no pens, but far more would’ve made for the pitch rather than the cramped and locked turnstiles at the back of the stand if it wasn’t expected that you’d get your skull cracked by a police baton and banned from football for life by going on the pitch.
    For too many years, fans were treated like animals and we constantly told police and politicians that it was making more problems than it was solving. Sticking us in cages and then blaming us for problems is classic police and political behaviour.
    No-one should ever go to a football game and lose their life. I remember watching this game live on tv and the cameras cut away as it soon became clear that what was happening was a horrible disaster. I know many Wednesday fans were very angry at the way their ground had been used and the crowd control had been such a disaster. Hillsborough was not safe for a large match of this type. The policing was a disaster from start to finish. None of this should’ve happened.

    Fans usually (get away with pushing those in front to sometimes get friends in.) but never would have imagined that fellow Liverpool fans would die as a result! The police supervision was not as effective compared with previous years and they should have admitted so. Warning signs of overcrowding at the Leppings Lane end in previous years wasn't heeded! People became heroes helping rescue people after the calamity, it's a pity more people didn't (or were restricted from) preventing it in the first place!

      Funny thing is that you can’t stop mentioning it because it’s a very popular topic to begin accusing Liverpool fans and talking the Hillsborough disaster as a point scoring excuse to keep the club from being allowed to remember the tragedy, it’s strange how you have so much sympathy for Heysel yet never mention Ibrox or Bolton v stoke disaster? Not interested in any other club but love the opportunity to play the ‘what about Heysel’ card! Lazy and predictable as usual

    • @jennydunn9014
      @jennydunn9014 Před měsícem

      Because people like you don’t stop talking about it because you don’t seem to understand the difference between the two tragedies, Heysel charged and imprisoned people for their actions and Hillsborough was covered up and an enquiry into the deaths of 97 people was ruled as unlawful yet nobody has ever been convicted or sentenced to prison? Do you understand now? Or maybe you just need to use Heysel for a cheap pop at Liverpool fans? Why don’t you mention Ibrox or Bolton v stoke? You have no interest in any of the disasters other than using it for your predictable posts
