I just went back out fishing again for the first time in years last week and got bit and I'm back in it and taking my 4yo and 6yo with me. There's an interesting phenomenon in all animal behavior, that when a stimulus elicits a known action pattern (in this case the feeding strike of a fish) the strength of said action is directly proportional to the strength of the input. In short, the exaggerated size of those artificial baits makes a lot of sense.

Truth brother. I did well at a tournament on lake murray here in south carolina last weekend. WhIle most guys were hunting shad spawn schoolers I marked a couple bluegill beds and it paid off big time in a lake normally it isn't a factor on. Big bass candy!

You are accurately describing conditions I see. I wondered why I saw other fry but not panfish. A bait not closely resembling natural forage getting attention is interesting to see. I have seen bass not interested in trick worms...

Cool Richard. I already had this planed out. But, I'm going to try the Hellgrammite set up with Hi-Vis braid line to a barrel swivel just below a 1/16 oz bullet weight, 18" Fluorocarbon leader next week. I hope it works as good as this video. Thanks for all you education!!!

When I was a kid I fished in a old stock pond that belong to my neighbor he had it stocked with bass and bluegill one spring day as I was easing my way around it I was working the bass beds all of a sudden I saw something that has stuck with me my entire life there was a large mouth bass facing off against a very large bluegill I'll always maintain that they couldn't decide which one had the rite of way just a guess but I'll say the bass was 5lbs or better the bluegill was at least a two pounder it was truly a WOW moment 😊

They sail right onto that helga-ramite, some say it's from hunger, some say it's from spite. Helgramites are fun. We seined a few on the river years ago, and the dobsonflies crowded in around the campfire. Of all the insects people would be scared of, dobsonflies are a really good one. The big pincers remain in the adult form. I've only been bites by helgromites, though, and they give several quick and vicious pinches. Scarey but not worth being scared of. A giant rubber helgramite is shere briliance.

You are hilarious I love your show!! You are incorrect about the hellgramites not being in still water I have them in my pools I keep for the bird's and frog's. They are dragon fly larvae and they lay eggs anywhere there is bugs for their babies to eat lol.

I have a friend who catches them all the time. He wades into marshes with window screens and shakes the foliage and the helgramites fall off onto the screens
He used to sell them to baitshops and make pretty good money. Now he just gets them for himself.
I used walk a side of local lake here that you can only get to by long hike down a steep bank or boat and only electric motors or rowboats are alowed on this lake. No recreational stuff out side of the beach, I pulled bass and crappie off the nest all day. I caught my PB crappie on that steep bank 3 times before I could get a hold of that slimy fish. No net. I thought it was big largemouth until I pulled it out. That fish was 3.4 lbs. that is huge crappie. I let him go.

Those Nikko helgramites are absolutely deadly. The backwoods ponds of Appalachia that I fish, shad is almost non-existent and bluegill make up the primary forage but still hammer them on shad patterned baits,I seriously think color schemes are for the angler of to be adjusted slightly in regards to water clarity.
Thats a good ol something to eat and they'll eat it! They're just that mean, and that's the only explanation I have! Lol
Love that reel have one of my own early 90s still hooking fish to this day, that was the first thing to catch my eye and made me smile. And your right the Chinese junk they make today don’t hold up unless you want to drop a few hundred dollars. Thanks for the videos just as great as ol Bill Dance , Hank Parker, and Roland Martin.
