The most overlooked factor in the rise of SUV’s is modern headlight technology. Given the retina melting LED’s these days driving a low car at night is a nightmare!
Not watched this yet but can we have another shoutout for Tony on being a FANTASTIC podcast host last week? Top tier stuff - inspiring for a lot of people to hear the things said by both Sam and Tony 😁 Excited for this more 'normal' podcast again...
Underrated SUV: SQ7 - the new one with the petrol V8 that is. Never gets talked about, (probably because most people still think it has a diesel), 507 hp, sounds better than the RSQ8 and looks arguably better than most "Coupe" SUVs. Great option, if you want an understated powerful daily, that doesnt scream "look at me and how much money i make".
It think it should have the RS4 V6, but I’ll give you that. Diesel would have been a good choice, because it’s a big heavy thing, but it’s Audi, part of the VW group and that Diesel SQ7 came around the time of Dieselgate, so when you put it all together, you can see why they went for petrol.
Underrated luxury SUV - Genesis GV80, only came to the UK this year and they really are Bentley quality and way above an Audi, after being in one. The 2.5L petrol and 3.0 Straight-six diesel aren't bad aswell!
Sam for you- when you swap that M40i, you’ll realise that it’s just brilliant and you’ll only miss it when it’s gone. Keep on plugging with it and eventually you’ll learn to love it
Most overrated Sam: G wagon... Starts explaining his point of view Tony's head: oh the one who looks the same... and which Sam loves... Tony: I got one... The Defender... Sam: Oh... Why... Why Tony: because it's a f*** piece of sh*t... Ahahaha... That's why I hate listening only...I have to watch the podcast.
That tickled me because I saw one last week at some traffic lights. It's lights and parking sensors were going crazy, the guy was sat inside like it was just a normal thing for parking sensors to be beeping and the lights to be in disco mode when stationary in traffic 😅
I think the RS6 is a great car but Tony is right about it's price. It's so expensive because of how complex the suspension and ECU system is which will also be expensive to service down the road.
Two comments to add; 1/ good reason for SUVs - crappy pot hole covered roads. 2/ Do anything lifestyle SUV with massive load capacity - VW Transporter Kombi is hugely popular now.
Re the Stelvio Quadrifoglio 'Infotainment/Tech' doesn't worry me at all Sam. As long as the stereo has a great sound (they all do nowadays), I couldn't give a damn about all the other crap. Just more to go wrong anyway. You place a lot of weight on something that no one actually needs. Waze on your phone works very well. The Levante is pug ugly compared to the Stelvio. Slightly disagree with the first of the current SUV trend.....ML Mercedes-Benz- back in 98 this set a new standard in comfortable 4x4's....agreed 2 years later the X5 went one step further in sportiness as it didn't have a separate chassis, but it was shit off road and didn't have a low ration transfer box. So for those towing horseboxes or boats X5's didn't cut the mustard. They wouldn't go anywhere in the snow either (unlike the ML). The original ML is excellent off-road/snow by the way. I think the discussion about 'fruity cars' is actually pointless as in this country you are stuck in the same queue of traffic as the SUV's you list as boring. No one buys SUV's to use on track days do they? Wouldn't touch a Land Rover product despite your collective love of RR Sport.....don't want to get to know the recovery drivers thank you......or the LR dealer invoices.
Own many high end cars...but 90% of the miles last year were driven in our New Defender...just such a FANTASTIC car to live with every day. Whole family absolutely loves it.
bloody brilliant chat as always. this podcast is IMO the best automotive/“car CZcamsr” podcast on YT. So focused and knowledgeable yet doesn’t take itself too seriously. Cheers Sam and Tony
I’ve always had hot hatches as a daily driver and switched to a Macan GTS last year, brilliant car, fast, reliable, luxurious and handles really well and you don’t drive it like a arse to enjoy it.
Great Podcast as always, although nothing is better than the episode where Paul, Supercars of London, shows up an hour early. The banter between all three equates to my favorite episode of all time
i agree with the suv man. my dad wouldn’t be planning on getting an svr if he didn’t like cars and have a family. daily driver can carry the family and be fun to drive
Just got a new Urus. Great car. Got to drive a DBX for a few days. It was complete garbage. Felt super cheap in the interior and the seats were very uncomfortable.
Tony is absolutely right about BMW run flat tires catching nails. I have had 6 tires replaced in 18 months on my 2020 X5 from picking up nails. All 4 were replaced 2 months ago free of charge. Thank god for the tire insurance plan I bought when I purchased the car.
Best SUV. GLC 300d. Looks great. Quick enough, good torque. 40mpg in town, 600 miles from a tank on a long distance run. Not too large; easy to fit roof box if you need more.
My Dad had 5 or 6 Range Rovers back in the 80s and 90s. However I’ve got a ‘16 BMW X5. 7 seats, best Nav, tow bar, based on rwd chassis so a good drive. BUT, the ‘Rangie’ just has something special about it.
I got out of E63 saloon to a Cayenne GTS because I needed a vehicle that could do everything whilst putting a smile on my face when I drive it. And I can go on ski trips and still tow up to 3200kgs
Great epsiode, AMAZING guest! Had a great time listening but I am still an estate sort of guy lol. However, the current X5 M50i is so good and provides all the X5 M benefits with the luxuries of the X7
Great discussion guys. I just leased a 2021 Levante and for 2021 Maserati does have the new U Connect 5 infotainment system. It’s fantastic! Mike Chahbandour
The Q3 2021 results are out and these show Aston Martin delivered a total of 2,186 DBX SUVs between January and September. In this interval, the other products generated sales of 2,064 units.
My dad has had loads of Full size Range Rovers and recently we have had a couple of Sports including diesel to SVR, right now we have a Vogue great car but the sport is better for us due to the compact size and fact it drives like a sports car. I think a Sport with a medium sized engine E.g P400 HST is best car best of both.
I think the boom with crossovers started with middle income earners looking to own a car that gave them more status. Before crossovers, mid to large SUVs such as the X3, Q5 or Range Rover were relatively unattainable for most people. Then car makers started launching good looking small SUVs that were often the same size as older x3's and everyone wanted that status vehicle. I think that's where it started. For a time a car like a modern Tiguan was a big car for a good price. Personally I think SUVs look good on the driveway and families like to look like they are doing well don't they? The funny thing is they have absolutely no boot space and you'd be better off in a Saloon car but try telling young families that.
I begged Audi for the RS6 and RSQ8 and thought they absolutely NAILED them both…and they’re both yawners and we all dumped them fairly quickly for cars with more theater. They’re not “a Urus on a budget.” They’re teddy bears and the Urus is Chucky.
The DBX might not be the best car but has definitely saved Aston Martin. Autocar just released an article today about how the DBX has made up 50% of Aston sales in 2021 so far. The company have doubled their sales this year purely down to the DBX. I think it is just that as a large number of them are being bought outside Europe it looks to us like they are not selling many.
Totally agree With Sam on the G Wagon and Andrew on the RS6 - it’s just a car that people on the internet like, it looks good and it’s fast but it’s a big old heavy barge. Similar to a fast SUV.
Not convinced any farmers are buying defenders - I expect they've all moved into L200s, Hiluxes etc. surely it is only being bought by people have no need for any of its capability.
It would be nice if you had dropped down to the small SUV bracket 30 to 40k for example, my wife and myself love your podcast and your CZcams channel and now Tony has joined you it's the icing on the cake.Just remember not all your viewers are loaded with cash.Otherwise 10 out of 10👍👍🏁
How are you only paying £450 per month ? Sounds a great deal , I’m paying £850 per month for a R Design XC90 on 15,000 miles p/a and need to replace it in February 2022. Love the last few shows on SUV’s as I need to make a decision on something that has the same space as what I have now to cater for, kids , dogs etc !
Every time I mention to anyone that I’m thinking of a Range Rover I’m met with get used to standing at the side of the road! This is from owners and car valet guys. Surely it’s not that bad these days?
Tony is a genius. Funny how you mention run flat getting nails. Im having that very issue with my bmw! Pirelli p zeros too!!! Keep getting bloody nails stuck in them.
SUVs are 4/5 cars in one. Even if you have the money, some people can’t be arsed to run and maintain 3 cars to cater for each role. Personally, I’ve got just the regular X5 30d. Plenty fast enough
Very good episode. Here usa jeep and now ford with new bronco taking over Outdoors and suv market. Also for cheap the f-phase is cool for money quite reliable and not to crazy here used. Theo huynida and Kia are on point with small suv lately.
I think you've missed a point though. I am a car guy but I don't have the money to run a Macan or an SUV that's actually nice to drive. All, literally all, my mates have things like Sportage, Qashqai, XTrail, Ateca, Tuscan, CX3 some of which are just not that big. And none of them give a toss how good they are to drive and they just buy them cause its what people do. FYI I have two kids and a dog, So I just stick to a wagon, Mazda 6 at the moment
Hi Sam, great podcast! I've noticed you have some STG keychains on the desk but they're not on the website for purchase? Will they be added to the website soon? Many thanks!
31:16 Tony’s F bomb caught me off guard haha
The most overlooked factor in the rise of SUV’s is modern headlight technology. Given the retina melting LED’s these days driving a low car at night is a nightmare!
Driving my 2001 BMW 330ci at night is a nightmare almost get a seizure when a car gets to close. Don’t even get me started on those audi lights 🙄
Spot on
The moment a "lighthouse' equipped SUV come up Infront or behind you at night. 😲
Agreed! If you drive a lower car you're gonna be blinded since most modern suvs have bright lights
get the f-pace as replacement so 2 birds 1 stone with the f-type thing you want, then get a gt3 touring😆😂
Honestly yes, would rather see an f-face svr rather than an f-type which we already had plenty of content on
Not watched this yet but can we have another shoutout for Tony on being a FANTASTIC podcast host last week? Top tier stuff - inspiring for a lot of people to hear the things said by both Sam and Tony 😁
Excited for this more 'normal' podcast again...

Agree. I bought one instead of a Porsche Cayenne GTS. Same engine albeit the Audi has more Bhp (go figure) and 15k less fully loaded vorsprung!!!
Underrated luxury SUV - Genesis GV80, only came to the UK this year and they really are Bentley quality and way above an Audi, after being in one. The 2.5L petrol and 3.0 Straight-six diesel aren't bad aswell!
Crashy: widely used to describe a harsh ride. Tony right again in my opinion.
not so on our side of pond, so I am glad for clarification
@@TymaDem what side is that? Quite common in the UK to refer to the ride as crashy. Think clarkson did on on Top Gear a few times
@@mercury6765 I meant US, here we say stiff ride
@@TymaDem ahhh fair enough
@@TymaDem I thought stiff ride meant something else 😏
can't belive how few subs and views this podcast has, so underrated
I think part of it is there are a lot of audio-only listeners. The numbers you see here are a far cry from total numbers.
Sam for you- when you swap that M40i, you’ll realise that it’s just brilliant and you’ll only miss it when it’s gone. Keep on plugging with it and eventually you’ll learn to love it
Andrew is a top bloke, awesome podcast guys, this was top jokes but also great content!
Most overrated
Sam: G wagon... Starts explaining his point of view
Tony's head: oh the one who looks the same... and which Sam loves...
Tony: I got one... The Defender...
Sam: Oh... Why... Why
Tony: because it's a f*** piece of sh*t...
Ahahaha... That's why I hate listening only...I have to watch the podcast.
"No he's deluded" 😆

The thing I look forward to every week. Podcast is always a vibe 👌🏻🔥
Every episode should be called Tony plugging gravelwood for an hour🤣🤣
Long may he last,he brings a dealer mindset, and we get to hear him every week.
Underrated: Volvo XC90 V8. Such a sleeper, sounds incredible
Unfortunately it's engine only in the old XC
@@BestCarSound yeah and that’s why the old one is way cooler
Thank you for getting Andrew down to give his experience and thoughts 👍
31:19 You didn't bleep it LOL
Good point Tony. We’ve had 4 nails/screws in our X3 M40i. In 2 years. We’ll see now if that’s true, as we traded in for a X3M Competition
Great car!
Really enjoyed Andrew's perspective this week, great show 👍
On point again. The new X3MC is less crashy. And very fast.
This smooth and successful northerner grates at me with his palpable aura of self-satisfaction
I think the RS6 is a great car but Tony is right about it's price. It's so expensive because of how complex the suspension and ECU system is which will also be expensive to service down the road.
Two comments to add;
1/ good reason for SUVs - crappy pot hole covered roads.

To replace the BMW X3 M40i would be the AMG GLC43 as the interior has way better style and the engine has way better emotion
Re the Stelvio Quadrifoglio 'Infotainment/Tech' doesn't worry me at all Sam. As long as the stereo has a great sound (they all do nowadays), I couldn't give a damn about all the other crap. Tony, you’re absolutely right. Run-flat BMW tires are so prone to nails. I’ve had to replace the tires on my X1 three times now just because of nails.
Loved this. Keep up good work. Helps me with the constant traffic jams of the uk.
for dailying and usability, don't go X3M from M40i, yes it's faster but you're not gonna enjoy how much stiffer it is
Great Podcast as always, although nothing is better than the episode where Paul, Supercars of London, shows up an hour early. The banter between all three equates to my favorite episode of all time

You could see Tony dying to bring up the defender hahahaha
Crashy is the right word.. I wish Sam would stop correcting Tony.. hes right more often than not!
Absolutely Top Notch hosting from Sean 👌
Loved this one! Good dynamics between all of you! Great chat! Love it
Definitely the Jaguar F-Pace SVR is the most underrated SUV, look, sound, speed are amazing !

Nice guest.
31:15 forgot to beep that out 😂😂😂
personally if i’m paying urus and turbo gt money. i’d get the urus. it can’t be mistaken for a base model cayenne 😂

Hahaha actually crying at Tony's Land Rover Defender analysis lol!! 31:08
Mercedes AMG GLC63s slept on!!!!
Just went from an e92 m3 to a cayenne gts 3.6TT and loving every minute of it, handles great, goes well and actually cheaper to run than m3
If I ran a large radio station I would be offering you two squillions to come and present the motoring show. It’s really good stuff.
This was one of the best episodes. So entertaining and informative loved it lads 👍🏽💪🏽
F-Type SVR, 360 and a 911 thats got be the best line up!
These prices are killing me. Only 115.000 for an RS6 vorsprung? They cost 250.000 euros here that’s like 220.000 pounds bleh
31:07 Sam you forgot the *bleep* 😂
Knock knock
Who’s there?
Kwikfit, Savills and The Avon Lady…😂
Mr. SUV vs Mr JWW ... FIIIIIIGHT!
I agree with the latest RS6 comment and I'm someone who loves a fast estate
No other podcast comes close to this

Newer than 2014 I believe are best. My uncle has had a 2014 RR Sport, now a 2018 P400e Range and he hasn't had any problems with either.
I would look for a Cayenne tdi v8 as new as possible and low mileage. However in your case, I would keep the x3 and buy a gt3 or turbo s
Great content as always👍🏼
Brilliant Episode.. Thank you,
BMW X5 M50i! Great all around package
porsche 911 GT5 will be launched mid 2022
Talking about underlooked alternative, what about the velar SV A, ive ever only seen one. They're bonkers looking
Tony is a genius. Funny how you mention run flat getting nails. Im having that very issue with my bmw! Pirelli p zeros too!!! Keep getting bloody nails stuck in them.
Got a Cayenne S. 4.2 twin turbo diesel great car really nice place too be
Amazing episode loved it.
I hope Tony becomes the richest man on earth. His practical thinking is a gem.
Sam needs to see the video of Shmee 150's G63 go round the Nurburg Ring with 4 passengers
Must be Thursday, excellent.

Stelvio QF in Tony's stock Sam, That would do shouty very well.
Very good episode. Here usa jeep and now ford with new bronco taking over Outdoors and suv market. Also for cheap the f-phase is cool for money quite reliable and not to crazy here used. Theo huynida and Kia are on point with small suv lately.

Bloody funny too,🤗

Best suv: what about the Stelvio quadrifoglio ??
