'Tariki' in my community is a word that means 'date'. Like a calendar date not the fruit. Hi Maori people I am Kenyan Bantu from the Agikuyu tribe and I think the Maori people and the Agikuyu are ancient kin. I've come to learn that my culture is like a padlock, and the Maori culture and language etc are the keys to unlocking it. You guys are the originals. Our culture(Agikuyu), whilst still maintaining a lot of its ancientness, has been processed over millennia. Surprisingly though, the Maori culture greatly helps explain the why's of many things in my culture. My name is Wairimu and over 10 years ago, I did a Google search of my name and by then, there was hardly any African based content on Google. So Google approximated my name as a Maori name. That was the first time I came across or even heard of the Maori people. I didn't dwell on that Google find but it did register at the back of my mind. So in 2020 during covid and out of nowhere I decided to search Maori language out of curiosity to see if we share words with similar meaning as a way to establish that maybe we're connected in one way or another. Boy oh boy! Google wasn't wrong all those years ago. Turns out we still share words with similar meaning. I've since come to learn that my language is an Austronesian-Polynesian-Bantu language. Maori and Maori culture are a very ancient btw. Don't let people convince you that the stories you carry were recently formed on the New Zealand island. Nah!

Kia Ora ! Hello ! I am from New Zealand and am mixed Maori and Pakeha (European) I have for a long time believed Maori are much more then their arrival onto New Zealand, there is also so much talk of even more ancient beings inhabiting NZ long before Maori arrival, I think NZ as a country is more ancient then we think and are taught, so many secrets to this land, I think this goes for many places in the world, so cool to see the similarities you came across :)

Hi Wairimu I am Kiwi of Euro descent (170+ years) in NZ. While tribes can be fun (or not ..see Scottish history) I believe we must see more widely! seems we (ALL OF US ) are actually out of AFRICA !! some of us got bleached on the outside but we are same blood! Education is the one method we have to use to get along in this wonderful world. Love to meet

Haha, hi guys. Thanks for the replies. I think haplogroups would explain how the seeming connection might have come about. Bantu are haplogroup E as are majority Africans and all Bantu related peoples including Yoruba, Senegalese etc. Now hap E share a father of origin DE with hap D. And hap D is generally prevalent amongst east Asians. And Maori people are east Asian in origin aren't they? Hap D is the Jarawa found on the islands in India of which east Asians have a high admixture of. So that's likely it. Oh and greetings, kia ora. We have 'Kiaora' as a name in my community. Our greetings similar to yours are 'kia awa' and 'kia maitu'. Our community's founding father is TENE. Tene names still exist in Maori, I've seen Katene, Watene. We have Watene, Tene. You have 'Waititi', we have 'Waititu'. 'ha hona' for you for healer, for us ha hona means it has healed. Tangata for people for you for us Tangata and its variations including 'tungata' for governing a people. You have 'rangatira', we have 'rangatira' and so on. My community has words with similar meanings with the Japanese and Chinese too. Thus the linkages are broad. Japanese 'Ikigai', we have 'Igai' both purpose. Heart 'koro' in Japanese, 'ngoro' in my community and 'enkoro' amongst other Bantu etc. 'Hua' flower in Chinese, 'ihua' flower in my community etc thus most likely the haplogroup DE shared origins of Africans and East Asians. I however don't think Maori have anything to do with African, I think they are strictly Asian in origins besides kiwi. Kind regards.

Having just immigrated from the northern hemisphere it felt so weird to be celebrating all the regular holidays ( Christmas, Easter etc.) completely out of context to their seasonal context. Thank you making this info so accessible.

Kia ora Matua, for the first time in my life, I've come to know a bit more about Matariki, and that it makes sense how nature tells us when its ready to provide kai and not man dictating otherwise, I love how the luna calendar is customized depending on where we live, its no secret man has no power over nature anyway. Loved this korero, and shall start actively using that maramataka❤
