അന്ന് മാറുമറക്കരുത് എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു. ഇന്ന് മാറിടവും കഴുത്തു മുടിയും മറക്കരുത് എന്ന് പറയുന്നു. ഞങ്ങൾ കഴിക്കുന്ന ഭക്ഷണം നിങ്ങൾ കഴിക്കണം , ഞങ്ങൾ ഭക്ഷിക്കാത്തത് നിങ്ങളും ഭക്ഷിക്കാൻ പാടില്ലെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞുകഴിഞ്ഞു. ഇനി ആചാരത്തിലേക്ക് കടക്കുന്നു....... ശബരിമല വിഷയത്തിൽ കോടതിക്കെതിരെ ആചാരം പറഞ്ഞവർ ഇപ്പോൾ മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ ആചാരം നിഷേധിക്കുന്നു. ശബരിമല കയറിയ സ്ത്രീ ഇന്നും ആക്രമിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. മുമ്പ് വിദ്യ അഭ്യസിച്ചവന്റെ ചെവിയിൽ ഇയ്യം ഒഴിച്ചവർ, ഇന്നു വസ്ത്രം ധരിച്ചതിൻറെ പേരിൽ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം നിഷേധിക്കുന്നു. ഇനി അവർ പറയുന്ന സ്ഥാപനത്തിൽ പോയി പഠിക്കണം/ വേണൊങ്കി പഠിച്ചാൽ മതി എന്ന ഭാഷ്യം ഇപ്പോൾ തന്നെ പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇതിപ്പോൾ തടഞ്ഞില്ലെങ്കിൽ ഇന്ത്യയെ പതിനായിരം വർഷം പുറകിലേക്ക് ഇവർ കൊണ്ട് പോകും.

A nun on the other hand is a Christian lady who decides to take up monastic vows whenever she is ready and until then she would not cover her head. In fact even a nun when she joins the convent doesn't cover their heads the very day. There is an order of everything.

The whole controversy was fuelled by some girls wearing big black burqa all over their uniform. Please their pictures are all over the internet. First of all, Private schools as far I know in India don't allow wearing any religious clothing including the Bindi especially in the urban cities. The only exception given is for the Sikh community because it is defined as their habit. You can send your girls to your schools which im sure are many in Kerala.
Secondly, I didn't make anything up, I am well aware of Islamic practices, i'm half Indian and half Lebanese. There is an age in Islamic sharia when a woman is considered worthy of marriage and that is 'puberty'. Of course it is punishable and illegal in many countries today because we have built a framework around that based on western secular values. My mothers country Lebanon has Islamic courts and sheikhs that allow child marriages and is still prevalent across the Middle East. In fact when studies were done in India, Kerala also had child marriages registered under Islamic laws which is why your community opposed to the new laws to raise the age of marriage recently. You get offended easily always, not our mistake!

Islam considers a girl fit for marriage as she reaches puberty. We all know those great Islamic female characters who consummated their marriage as soon as they reached puberty.
Hijab is an obligation upon all Muslim girls and is never a choice of 7 year old. I can see you get upset like most sensitive Muslims and I'm well aware of a religious indoctrination, one that is entirely based upon misogyny and fear.
I repeat, girls aren't raised to be nuns in Christian families, girls are taught to be modest like all in all Eastern societies but not cover up looking like penguins!
When a Christian girl choses to join a monastery she wears the 'habit' of that particular monastery. It's a monastic habit but not a tradition for all members of that religion, it is only designed for a specific set of people of a 'clerical order'. Some monastic order have head covering for the nuns while some others don't. There are Hindu monks that wear the orange and white shawl. It is a religious monastic tradition but do you see Hindu Brahmins wear the shawl(unless they are at their schools or temples) in a school or Buddhist Bikhus wearing their monastic attire?
My mom is Syriac Orthodox and our nuns in the Middle East look like just like they are wearing the Burqa(without the Niqab) but in India there are nuns that only wear the saree. It purely depends on the cultural habits and congregations. The emphasis is on chastity and modesty in complete service and dedication to the Church and community. Christian Monastic clothing is diverse and not the same for everybody, let alone lay people. In fact all the headcovers for both priests and nuns are restricted to monks only.
This is different from a situation where ALL WOMEN (from a menstrual age) are asked to cover up for the reason that she can entice men. There is another theory that this clothing was decided to distinguish the women from the slaves in earlier Islamic era. Even Prof Karassery mentioned an interesting theory of protecting from harsh sun. But the reasons that Islamic scholars state that the Hijab is an obligation of all women to avoid dressing up provocatively. We know there are many sheikhs who themselves issued fatwas against women for dressing otherwise. This is the foundation laid for girls even as young as 4-5 today. All thanks to the ways of a prophet who asked a girl in marriage when she was some 4 or 5 years old. In Muslim countries until mid 60s women were promised in marriage as young as 8-9 and married off at 12.
This is all the result of the same religious indoctrination with no scriptural backing or logic whatsoever. Your religious practices that developed by influence of extreme conservative ideas in the late 90s cannot be counted as a 'religious tradition'.
Before Wahhabism spread across the MENA and Asia, women did have a 'choice'. Now it's the teachers of your religion and also the governments in middle Eastern countries that made the hijab mandatory. Saudi Arabia just made it legal to not have hijab a couple of years ago, in Iran its still punishable if you don't wear the hijab. Have you seen how little girls dress up in Islamic societies today? Visit the Middle East and not just the average Malayalee hotspot of Emirates or Bahrain.
How did Muslim women start this trend in Kerala just some 20 years ago? Are you saying Muslim women before the 90s in Kerala were not religious? What was the religious tradition back then? How did the rich Arabo-Malabarese tradition of Mapilla Muslims change suddenly in the 90s?

I appreciate you calling yourself agnostic although you don't sound like one. I already mentioned there is an age as per Islamic law when a man can take a woman as his wife, that is 'puberty'. The hadiths makes it permissible for a man to take a wife after her menstrual age. This is evident in various hadiths involving famous women like Aisha, Safiya where it mentions their menses and marriages being consummated simultaneously.
While Fiqh manuals of the different schools of Islamic jurisprudence vary it's generally allowed in Islam to have young girls marry as they reach puberty. This was the case in most Islamic societies and Muslim organisations in India opposed the ban on marriage of minors under the Indian Child Marriage (Prevention) Act on grounds that it was against the Muslim Personal Law. Council of Islamic Ideology in Pakistan had objected to the Pakistani Law prohibiting underaged marriages on grounds that it was contrary to Islam. Saudi Arabia raised the age to 18 just a year ago, if you're saying there is no legal law or fiqh as such then why are these people and Islamic countries ruling out such laws and why are they opposing it on religious grounds? Sudan to this day allows marriage of girls as young as 9. Why did Muslim organizations protest against raising the age of marriage to 21 anyway?
The concept of the Hijab is relative to marriage and it is sunnah for girls to be wearing the hijab in front of non-mahram males. Just search the age of a girl to start wearing the hijab and that is somewhere between 7 and 9. 7 or 9 is not an age at which a girl could ever claim to be wearing a hijab by her own choice.
And before you call me an Islamophobe, one of my closest friend is a Muslim from Pakistan. She never wore any headcovering until she was like 20! She is now an adult and decided to wear the Hijab so we respect that. Compare that against what is happening in India in some schools, girls wearing a full black burqa come running chanting Allahu Akhbar vs other Hindu radicals on the other side. It's clear that the girls who protested were wearing full black covered burqas and there are pictures and videos of those protests. This cannot be blamed upon Karnataka but people with false motives from both communities.
These are both two sides of the same coin, I have my fathers family in India and I understand Malayalam somewhat(thanks to my achachan) and most top private schools in India have a uniform that all students adhere to. A couple of months ago there was a video of some Hindu girls protesting for not allowed to wear bangles in a Christian institution in Tamil Nadu. Like I said this is all the effect of radicalization of the youth, nothing else.
Meanwhile the OP here was correcting the fact that Christian nuns have nothing to do with the Hijab and that their habit is not related to this controversy. Christian girls aspiring to be nuns don't even study in regular schools and even if they are, they are accepted in a convent only after 10th grade and they need undergo several years of convent life before even being able to wearing the headcover. This is what I understood.
Cultural traditions of a religious section is intricately linked to the geography of its origin. When religion transplants to new geographies these traditions are adopted becoming part of identity.
Yet the freedom to practice religious traditions must not restrict individual liberty. As it restricts human potential with the aim to maintain hegemony.
Hijab is not the same as the niqab. Niqab as it fully covers the face, doesn't allow anyone to recognise the other person. Here individual identity is suppressed and made subservient to religious dictates. Hijab just covers the head, it's part of Islamic identity and it comes in all shades.
The Karnataka hijab row has more to do with the manufacturing of communal polarisation to benefit in the upcoming elections. There it's not about religion, it's about politics. It's about holding on to power.
