This is the lick, and the ensuing chaos, that blew my mind in 1992 when I first heard it, and made me want to be a better drummer. Freakin' Jimmy man!

Shredding is way over rated! I liked him better when he calmed down a bit, but I have to admit... This is very cool.

Yes, he is one of my favorite guitar players, but I am one was a little much. Unfortunately, his vocals are much more Miss than hit this is another example. They are one of my favorite bands, but his vocals are quite often unlistenable on these live videos.
Billy and his solos have always hooked me.
to me, it's still all about Gish.
even then, Jimmy was the best drummer of his generation. I’ve been in love with his drumming for my entire “musical life”

I like seeing how much appreciation Jimmy gets in comment sections. As a lifelong drummer and Pumpkins fans, I didn't realize how many people were fans of his playing until I started watching old Smashing Pumpkins recordings and scrolling through the comments. I had always thought he was a more underrated and lesser known drummer, but I'm glad I was wrong lol.

Gotta love the Gish era , but it’s when Siamese dream came out and he heard cherub rock on the radio and knew he was in the making of something big 😊

Was at this show....this was 2 days before I went away to NIU. My buddy Matt worked the door at Metro and occasionally at Double Door (R.I.P) and would always let me get into over 21 shows with my crappy fake ID.
Were pumpkins the opening band for Eleventh Dream Day? That's how I remember it.
I was at the album release party for Gish at metro. Think this was a little early. Loved the 90s metro and Smart Bar. It was crazy to see the bands we saw in such a small venue and the sound on this recording does do it justice. The acoustics in that room were perfect.
Funny to think about, this was 12 years before I was born, the people who were there didn’t know what their were seeing, that they were a part of the history, The pumpkins will always be my favorite band
Some of them knew.
The first I heard of the pumpkins was from a concert review in a guitar magazine in '92. Believe it or not, that's how we used to learn about new music.😉 A few months later, while working and listening to the local college radio station, Gish was played in it's entirety. I was floored and bought the cassette immediately. 😆 I then received the CD for Christmas that year along with a new CD boombox and several other great discs at the time. But, I do also remember telling people to remember the name. Some of us knew for sure 👍

Agreed. I don't see how it's really even a debate. Later albums were still good, but they never blew my mind like Gish did.
I wish I was alive to have seen this in person.
It wouldn't have been until the next year, May 1991, that I heard of them and bought the first record.
This is the Pumpkins I want to remember! Billy with hair. Darcy with her long blond mane.
And they just overpowered everyone with Jimmy on drums.
He drove the songs into your skull! As a result they were more powerful than the other bands around.
And the songs were good!

pumpkins were the opener for this show! i was there. Eleventh Dream Day was the headline.
Eleven who! Funny how all the other bands around them just dissolved into nothingness. Remember the other Chicago bands out at the time? Neither do I because they were all inconsequential and did nothing.
Guzzo Pinc how did you hear about them at this time? I would hear them mentioned in The Reader and word of mouth but that was about a year later.

@@guzzopinc1646 nice surprise! Eleventh Dream Day wasn’t bad for an indie band. I think one of the members Brown was Darcy’s husband.
@@75pdubs Eleventh Dream Day still is putting out records every once in a while. I'd group them with bands like The Replacements and Husker Du --earlier indie punk rock type stuff. Their bass player is Doug McCombs who also plays with Tortoise and Sea and Cake... the band was led by Rick Rizzo who is a great lyricist... They are sort of Chicago stalwarts
In 5 years they would own the world.

Gish is Corgans masterpiece. Every song flows into the next, not a bad song on this album. Sounds even better live.
Funny how much Darcy and James changed their stage performance over the years. James started to hang his head and hide and Darcy became more mobile and less reclusive.
Shannon Lee is cute.
I believe they started to crawl out of that post punk attitude they had in the beginning. They used a lot of chorus and a clean sound, more delicate I'd say. On this video they seemed to embrace rock as it is, distortion, chaos and etc.

I saw them in Dec in 91 and from the moment the drums kicked in, it was like a small explosion started in the corner of the room and the shock waves hit us and kept rolling over us for the rest of the night. I had only heard a few songs from the album but my mind was split right open!

Well it was 1990. I guess the sound guy thought he was working a White Snake show. But yeah, that was pretty terrible. Jimmy still killed it though. I don't think he's ever had a bad performance.

Pretty good considering they were an unkown act at the time and Gish wasn't even out, much less fully recorded. Not much effort put into a proper recording unlike later metro shows
