    As a child in the Natal of the 50s, I remember being thrilled at the Garretts going up past Wyebank station, up to Kloof, often in "push /me, pull you" mode, especially with heavy loads/ many wagons! Happy,Happy memories!

    Having watched so many of your magnificent steam locomotives videos, and especially your work in South Africa (where I lived in 1984) I admire the incredible footage that you have taken over several years. Well done Sir. Treasures to watch many times over on a big TV with the surround sound turned up. Sometimes a whole afternoon or morning session. Cheers from the Train Lord in South Australia.

    I used to lie in my bed in Kitwe, Zambia and listen to the Garrats setting off with their cargo of copper - such a distinctive syncopation as the two driving sets went into and out of sync. Very memorable. Thank you.

      Therefore I also have a garden railway with many steam locomotives modeled on the Harz narrow gauge railways (HSB) in Germany.

    Thanks for this very impressive film - I wonder if those locos are still operating in 2015?
    The only Garretts I have come across are the 10.25 gauge ones on the Wells and Walsingham Railway in Norfolk U.K.. They do great work pulling tourists up the 'steep' gradients.

    What was the reason for the GMAM being uncoupled before the bridge? Weight restrictions on the bridge over the waterfall?

    • @steamfreak
      @steamfreak  Před 3 lety +1

      They were just doing it for the photographers. Only the GF went further on to New Hanover so the GMAM was going to be taken off at Albert Falls anyway.

    Good Video how many preserved steam locos are in use in SA Now ie 2013.

    What was the difference between the SA Garrets and the Aussie ones??

    • @steamfreak
      @steamfreak  Před 10 lety

      Hmmm, which class of SA Garatt and Australian Garratt did you want to compare? Lots of differences and lots of similarities...

  • @likoni02

    Excellent!! What gradients are involved?

    • @steamfreak
      @steamfreak  Před 9 lety +1

      likoni02 There are many 1-in-30 gradients on this line on the climb out of Pietermaritzburg

    • @likoni02
      @likoni02 Před 9 lety +1

      Thanks for that info. It has to be steep to bring 2 Garratts to their knees!

      The steepest gradients on South African railways were 1 in 20

    Are these locos still running?

    • @steamfreak

      No, sadly not. The Umgeni Steam Railway has a 19D running at present, and a 3BR under restoration.

    Wouldnt they be better off using the American "Big Boys" ?

    • @steamfreak
      @steamfreak  Před 10 lety +1

      No. The SAR did tests between Mallet locomotives and Garratts and the Garratts won the tests in every category. I know that Big Boys are not a Mallet but close enough in design. I think UP would have been better off using Garratts.

    • @kevdoom2
      @kevdoom2 Před 9 lety

      steamfreak3450 The Garratts would be pretty useless over here man.

    • @steamfreak
      @steamfreak  Před 9 lety +4

      Maybe these little 3'6" gauge ones. But a Garratt to fit the US loading gauge with 1940's "Superpower" specs? Awesome!

    • @kevdoom2
      @kevdoom2 Před 9 lety

      Maybe. Maybe.

    • @ThePaulv12
      @ThePaulv12 Před 6 lety +2

      Jim Jardine put your thinking cap on squire.
      These Garratts are a response to lightly laid track, tight radius turns for a country with a small population and therefore a small economy which means less traffic ie freight and pax.
      There is a saying in engineering and it is - Form Follows Function.
      US = big economy, big traffic, big freight so on and so forth. This is why you see Challengers, Big Boys and 8500hp turbines.
      Also the cost of bridges and track to take the high weight of these big locos is high but so too are the profits so they spend the money. There's that Form Follows Function thing again.
