    Measuring the alcohol content of ready-to-drink beer can now be done with a high level of accuracy. The SmartRef and EasyDens meter combo can calculate the precise alcohol by volume (ABV) with an accuracy of 0.5 % v/v. The SmartRef is a digital refractometer that measures light refraction and the EasyDens is a digital density meter. These two meters paired with the Brew Meister app allow you to measure the alcohol concentration of finished beer.

      Thanks so much! I really appreciate the support 🍻 the SmartRef is an awesome little meter. Anton Paar makes great equipment

    Hey could you do some more testing for us? Compare the easy dens to the smart ref at typical OG and FG values and see how close the smart ref is to it??

    which one mesure the alcohol? cause i have easy dens only and it says that is out of parameter when i want to mesure the alcohol in beer... i need the other gadget for abv?

      You need both of these to measure the alcohol content of finished beer. They take two different measurements and combine them to get the alcohol level

    Nice Ryan!Nice presentation! Carbon dioxide needs to be removed before the measure?

      Thanks! Yes, you have to degas the sample before putting it in the meter. One of the easiest ways to do that is put it in a small container with a lid and shake it

    Do you need both? What if you only have one or the other? What are you missing out?

    • @ryanmichaelcarter
      @ryanmichaelcarter  Před 4 měsíci

      Yea you need both to measure finished beer. You can approximate the alcohol content by using only the Easy Dens but it requires a measurement before and after fermentation, similar to a hydrometer.

      @@ryanmichaelcarter Okay, great. Another question then: What if you only have the SmartRef, can you still approximate the alcohol content afterwards IF you used it to measure the original gravity? Does the app support that and conduct the conversion after inputting the final gravity?

    • @ryanmichaelcarter
      @ryanmichaelcarter  Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@joshuapinter yea it does. It uses a different method but can still approximate the alc content with decent accuracy.

      Really appreciate the reply. Trying to figure out my upgrade path, starting with one or the other.
      Last question: if you *had* to pick just one, which one would you get?

    • @ryanmichaelcarter
      @ryanmichaelcarter  Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@joshuapinter I’d go with EasyDens, it uses the U-tube method which is industry standard

    Very expensive

  • @CrazyAboutVinylRecords

    $400. 🙄 Thanks but no thanks. I'll stick with my accurate-enough $52 Brewing America hydrometer. For the price of this expensive and totally unnecessary gizmo I can brew several batches of great beer. Probably worth it for someone who took out a second mortgage on their house to buy a brewing system, but for the average home brewer this is a waste of money.

      It is pricey for sure.. definitely not for everyone

      Ya that’s totally a good criticism. I hesitated on this because of price for a while and then finally bit the bullet on Black Friday last year (300 bucks). It’s just a joy to use. Hot side the sample is small so easy to bring the temp down for a very accurate read. And cold side it’s easy to degass and more accurate which I like for the tail end of ferm and assess g hop creep issues. Your brewing America hydrometer is a very respectable device too, but for the full functionality I think you also need a mash temp hydrometer and one of the final gravity hydrometers for better accuracy… and then you are looking at 100-150 bucks for hydrometers too, right? That was my thought process at least.
