  • In this video, Pat returns to the halter with Chinaco to address a problem he had crossing water the day before. This is a perfect example of when it will behoove you to take care of a problem in the halter rather than ruining the lightness you have achieved in a bosal. Sometimes you have to return to an earlier point in your horses training to go forward. If they become confused, anxious or overwhelmed, its best to take a step back, work on things they already know well, fix any braces or gaps, then re-approach the problem

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  Před 2 lety +2

      You need to be aware of the context. Chinaco is 3 years old. Pat started him around 7 months ago. He is currently riding in a 5/8 bosal and heading for a spade bit. It’s a different story with a 9 year old horse. If she’s in a western bit, stay in it. Keep her head pointed at the water and be emphatic with your legs using them to block her from going anywhere but forward.

    Thank you for this video. This scenario is all too familiar from trail rides on my appy gelding ( it is soggy country here in Nova Scotia) . Dang tricky to train on a narrow stream/puddle since he jumps it every time! Tried it from the ground and from saddle. From watching your approach to the creek, I think I might possibly need more control (roper halter with low nose band ) to help him understand to take tiny steps to keep his brain in thinking mode rather than flight mode. And did you say MaiNE!!??? That is a short drive from me, so yahooo!!! Can't wait to meet you both. !!! as soon as people stop being stupid. AMEN

    I believe crossing ditches is a depth perception problem. When they trust you they will go quietly. What is your opinion?

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  Před 2 lety

      Horses cross ditches all the time when they are loose in a pasture so I don’t think it has anything to do with depth perception. With young horses, I believe it has to do with learning to balance a rider.

  • @Lisa_GalCali
    @Lisa_GalCali Před 2 lety

    Wow well done!! Question tho: You say “this is why it’s done in a halter. “ but I don’t understand… is the halter harsher?

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  Před 2 lety +2

      No. But you can ride more aggressively without losing the feel of the hackamore because it’s actually softer. You fix a horse by going with a softer material rather than a harsher material. Pat used the halter as a lever so he doesn’t ruin the signal of a the bosal.

    Seems like when I run into a situation like that , it's one of my kids riding and he/she is scared the horse is going to take a big jump and toss them off. The horse is definitely taking advantage of them. Any suggestions for giving kids the tools for dealing with a horse that refuses an obstacle? I know I could get on the horse and school him but I want the kid to learn how to weather the storm.

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes. You should get on the horse and make him fool proof. Then put your kids back on so they can gain confidence.

  • @checkmateknightracing7134

    Lol I'm guessing the other horse is playing with his bit

  • @epona9166
    @epona9166 Před 2 lety

    Pat it looks to me like you approached the creek at an angle, rather than straight on (perpendicular). Does that make the horse less likely to jump and more likely to fool around and deal with the bank?

    Why not get off and lead him across a few times?

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  Před 2 lety

      Because Chinaco had already been across the ditch when he was being ponied from another horse. Also, leading a horse across something they don’t like only teaches them to pull back. Driving across is an option but clearly not necessary in this case. The horse has to learn to go where the rider wants him to go without hesitation.

      I did that with my Gielding one time and from then on I just stayed on and we worked it from the saddle ..Worked fine.I EVEN TAUGHT HIM TO CROSS AN Old WOODEN BRIDGE ACROSS A deep CREEK AND RAVINE sometime AFTER THAT..IT JUST TOOK some time, , I'd say it took me about 30 minutes on the old wooden Bridge and we went across it I think 3 times after that and he did GREAT !! But the Bridge presented a different problem as it had gaps where the wooden planks were. Just crossing a small to medium size creek is not all that bad....PATIENCE was the Key in both circumstances .. ...
