Since rankings began in 2013 (so not including retro ranks) the lowest ranked players to win majors (going by the liquipedia list of majors) were (if I got my timing right) :
Zain (9th at the time of winning shine)
Axe (10th at the time of winning summit)
And now Mang0 (11th at the time of winning smash con)
Mang0 might be the lowest ranked player to win a major since rankings began!

Unfortunately it might be wishful thinking. Mang0 has already said he only has a few more years tops. Hbox has said he'll likely be playing melee alongside whatever is the newest smash game for the rest of his life.

I mean ibdw's fox has beaten zain a lot more consistently than Mang0's has as of recent. And beating zain is "top play". As of now Cody's top seems to be able to beat Zain, Mang0's has been struggling for awhile

The rankings will always mean nothing beyond being a general average of performance over a period of time.
I argued with people that Mang0 was still in the game and it felt really nice seeing Mang0 give them a middle finger after winning.

@@jooper2861 this is opposed to rankings trying to describe the potential of a player. It should let you assume that player 10 is better then player 11. If thats not the case the ranking system fails. The original commenter is suggesting that no ranking system will be like this because, it allows for the possibility to sleep on the kid
No, I don’t think these [or most accurate] rankings put into account potential unless two players are really neck and neck . I think their description of how rankings are just based on average performance over a given period fits the bill. That’s why we do rankings periodically and mang0’s placing in tournaments recently earned him 11th. Like most people can eyeball and say that, yeah mang is probably top 10 skill-wise, but doing your rankings non-empirically takes away some credibility from your power ranking.

I really love the difference between game 1,2,and 3 against hbox in the first set. Yoou can see Mang0 actually start to slow his play down after the first game, and being super hyped. Forcing the games to be more his pace till he closes the set out.
