"Caesar gun system may be the most modern piece of artillery" so long as your willing to ignore it doesn't have the mobility of a tracked vehicle and that the crew is completely unprotected. I'll take the M109 or PzH2000 any day.
Rather ironic that in the 1866 Six Weeks War with Austria, the Prussians had inferior artillery to the Hapsburg forces, but a superior battle rifle in the Dreyse over the Lorenz (which might have proven a far better weapon had Austrian tactical doctrine actually stressed more training in fire and maneuver as opposed to shock attacks with the bayonet), to then turn around and have superior artillery against the French in 1870, but now they had the inferior rifle. The French Chassepot was a far and away superior rifle to the Dreyse, but the French artillery, top of the line in 1859 at Solferino, and used to great effect by both North and South in the War Between the States from 1861-65, was now technologically outclassed.
Very good point and something that always bothered me. In one case the superior rifle won against the superior artillery. In the second case, it was the opposite.
