The Ochsenauge in the Goethe Park Weimar.
The Läutra Springs, an oasis in the park on the Ilm.
The Ochsenauge is located to the east of the residential palace. It can be reached via a small, narrow staircase in the Sternbrücke or directly by taking a walk in the park.
The ox eye and the sphinx resting on a large cuboid were built in 1786 by the court sculptor Martin Gottlieb Klauer based on a design by the court painter Georg Melchior Kraus. Both elements frame the sources of the Läutra.
The Läutra springs arise from a geological fault at great depths. The very calcareous water of the springs is unusually clear and has a constant temperature of 8.5 degrees Celsius all year round. The small Läutra stream flows into the Ilm after just a few meters.
The artificially created stone circle, which gave this place the name "Ochsenauge", once served as a washing place. The name Läutraquelle was derived from the former term for washing the laundry, " lautering ".
The ox eye and the sphinx are among the oldest design elements in Ilmpark.
Franz Liszt also spent a lot of time in this place.
