Oppo Watch (46mm) Review | A Worthy Wear OS Smartwatch?

  • Full review of the Oppo Watch (46mm) after two weeks of testing, including a closer look at performance, battery life, fitness tracking and the overall experience. Although it cribs the design from the Apple wearable, the Oppo Watch is still one of my favourite Wear OS smartwatches of 2020 - although some little quirks keep it from being among the very best.
This bigger 46mm model costs £369 in the UK, compared with £219 for the compact 41mm version. However, you don't just get a bigger device for that extra cash. This premium wrist rocket also adds improved water resistance, a sharper AMOLED screen, eSIM LTE support and more bonus features.
Wear OS serves up a huge selection of watch faces to boost the small but respectable selection provided by the Oppo Watch. I struggled with the Google Assistant support, but the NFC works well for contactless payments and you have full fitness tracking support. This 46mm model also includes cellular support and you can take calls with the built-in mic and speaker.
Battery life is typically not great but you'll get a full day of use with all of the features active, and you also get a Power Saver mode. So let me know what you think of my Oppo Watch review and if you're tempted to grab one yourself!

Glad to see a blighty bloke doing great tech reviews. I love the look and concept of this watch. I currently own a Samsung Galaxy sport but I think I prefer the square concept for a screened watch. I'm very intrigued with Oppo phones and when my Google pixel 2xl is no longer supported I'll definitely look into which oppo phone I want at the time of new phone.
Like you I'm waiting to see what second gen watch Oppo comes up with. Hopefully a little cheaper too.

Very few manufacturers bother with the squircle watch shape, especially here in the states. My best guess is they got scared away from years of publications bantering about "Apple clones" with things like post-iPhone X Android devices with a notched display or any thin and light laptop even remotely resembling a MacBook.
Honestly, I find these sort of comments to be pretty annoying since they negatively impact the sort of innovation that could be had if a company decides to actually take some design cues from Apple devices. Their products are always of amazing quality and have a fantastic, minimalist aesthetic to them. Why is it that manufacturers are so fearful of copying/mimicking Apple? I'd imagine it has to do with the probability of losing customers that simply don't take the time to notice the difference.
This device is a great example of this since I'm sure, since it was released, there have been plenty of headlines written out to the effect of "another Apple watch clone" or "Oppo copies Apple with their latest smartwatch".
The sad thing is, a lot of people will scroll right on by such an article thinking they actually know what it's like and that it couldn't be better in many ways than the watch it was supposedly copying (despite not really having much more in common than the general shape/similar band attachment mechanics).
The worst part of this is that many manufacturers won't even try a design similarly shaped simply because of the connotation applied by reviewers that ultimately sway so many people who don't take the time to research each and every device that could apply to their personal use-case (cost, features, style, etc). The squircle shape allows for a lot more text content to fit onto the screen than a circle does and may be preferable to those who actually enjoy a timepiece that follows the design guidelines we're used to on other devices. I personally use a Galaxy Watch Active2 because it does the majority of what I want out of a device a ton better than most of its rivals but I think the new Tizen/WearOS platform would really help sell a watch like this. The fluidity/battery life Tizen brings will likely carry onto the new platform and something like this watch would be incredibly compelling if it was improved in those two specific areas (currently, nothing outside of Samsung's devices seems to really manage top tier performance in both categories, it's usually one or the other and maybe a decent combo of both but never quite what the Galaxy Watch line does currently).
Funnily enough though, plenty of manufacturers have copied Apple's AirPod design without worry and these devices seem to have sold pretty well in many cases. The vast majority of Android devices are employing some form of punch hole cutout for their displays, I find it interesting that none of the Android manufacturers have any worry about copying each other but God forbid they take a design cue from an Apple product and it gets sold in the US (most of these actually end up as China exclusives, props to them for having the proverbial balls to not make true clones but still be similar enough to take flak from the community!).

    OW2 was a flop (globally).

I'm really loving the look of this watch and keep coming back to watch the review but there's one glaringly massive issue with "smart watches" I'm seeing. They're far too heavily skewed towards being a fitness tracker. I'm looking to buy one and I'm seriously struggling to find an actual smart watch. I want to be able to see and reply to notifications, screen calls, set reminders, alarms etc, voice assistant (Google/Alexa) but every single watch I find is a massive compromise or outright missing features and that gets worse the higher the price gets. The smart watch market needs a proper shake up and release a smart watch people can actually use every day with good battery, build quality, features, qi charging and be less focused on fitness tracking. If I wanted a fitness tracker I sure as hell wouldn't spend this much money tracking a 60min gym session, I want a mini version of my phone so I don't have to get it out of my pocket every 5mins to check notifications

Hi, maybe you can give me a hand. I'm looking for a second mobile phone that I only want to use for media use. (YT, Twitter etc.) The cell phone should be as cheap as possible. It doesn't even have to have an FHD display, HD is enough for me. I don't need much memory either, 16-32 GB is enough. Screen size doesn't really matter. The only requirement is that it can play a 720p video on CZcams and that it doesn't break in 2 weeks. If possible, the cell phone should be around 100 euros. (rather cheaper) I would be very happy about help because I am not really familiar with smartphones. LG
