The US Open is the final Grand Slam of the year and takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The 2022 US Open saw Spain's Carlos Alcaraz and Poland's Iga Swiatek claim the men's and women's singles titles. It was both players' first US Open title, with Alcaraz claiming his first Grand Slam title and Swiatek claiming her third Grand Slam title. The 2023 US Open main draw is scheduled to go ahead between August 28 - September 10. Hard to believe it took until 1983 before she won the open but boy did she make up for it. It’s been shown that being number one with a serve and volley game takes longer than baseline game to develops.great champion, the greatest serve and volleyer of all time.
I think in Martina's case it was more emotional than anything else. She was and still is a very emotional person (seems to run in her family - her biological father committed suicide) and that took time to get under control. Her life had also been disrupted by the defection, and she was also by temperament in her youth somewhat lazy. It took her several years to get over that, and even then, her nerves came back to haunt her at times. She was in an ongoing battle with her temperament. Ted Tinling famously said of her that "she goes from arrogance to panic with nothing in-between". She really managed to harness it all in the mid 80s, but it was always there bubbling away beneath the surface and started to creep back into her game from 87 onwards, when Martina herself said with hindsight that she was burnt out.
1991 semifinal was best navratilova's match. the game had changed a couple of times since she was at her peak. and she played the best old style tennis you will ever see. I remember being there thinking "for sure we will see many gorgeous things on court, but this play will never happen again" and so it was. that was the end, for something new to come, but unrepeatable.
In my opinion she is the GOAT!!

Given Martina's current position on the trans issues, its strange that she had no problem playing Renée Richards in the 1977 doubles final, and indeed hired Renée as her coach in the 80s. I wonder if they're still speaking.
I'd say her 84 and 83 wins were bigger moments than 1986....the 86 SF win was a MUCH better match than this Final

Golden slam in 1988, quadruple slam, 4 channel slam, 4 surface slam, 6+ slam titles in each 3 surface, successfully defended all 4 slams, 377 weeks at no 1, 8 years end no 1, 89.67% winning percentage in slams, atleast 88% winning percentage in all 4 Slams,13 consecutive grand slam final played & many more records that your fav didn't have.😉😉😉

Even so, Graf doesn’t have the most slams, she doesn’t have the most consecutive slams, she doesn’t have the best record at any slam, she doesn’t have the best record on any surface, she doesn’t have the longest winning streak, she doesn’t have the best career winning percentage, she doesn’t have the best win:loss season, she doesn’t have the most titles. Just a lot of ‘4 of this’ type non-records.
Martina has best record of any pro player at a slam, most consecutive slams, best win:loss seasons, longest winning streaks, most dominant unbroken spell at #1, best record on 2 surfaces, YEC record, most titles - 60 more than Graf. GOAT.
@@tobiasisback4605 during Graf's time you don't find Kathy Jordan, Claudia Klisch, Sukova, Rinaldi, Shriver, Jo Durie, Zina Garrison as the top 10. Austin was done till 1982, Mandlikova lacked consistency & Evert played outdated game with wooden racquet compared with Martina strong graphite racquet with athleticism that Evert fails to match.
@@tobiasisback4605 check Steffi's opponent - near prime Martina (34-36 years old Martina still peak Seles 7 times from 1990-93), Seles, Sabatini, ASV, Pierce, Novotna, Conchita Martinez, peak Hingis, Davenport & don't forget she also played both Williams sisters. So that miles ahead in terms of depth, talent & variety than Martina's rival in her heydays.
Marion Bartoli is a better Tennis player than Martina Navratilova. Marion Bartoli won Wimbledon grass court grand slam in 2013. Martina never won.
