This is making me want to rewatch Digimon Adventure more then anything.
Been going through it with my daughter and the sun is definitely dated but the story holds up really well

The rattling is for nostalgia's sake. See, the original one used what is known as a pendulum to count steps. Every time that clacker hit a surface, it would count up a number. You could take it out if you don't like the noise.
Another tidbit is that the antenna had a function. It couldick up some electronic thing that it would use for gameplay purposes. The D3, or the 02 digivice, uses it so you could find digimentals, eggs that allow your digimon to armor digivolve. Or the D2, the device you have, could use that on the 15th anniversary device to find other partners in need of help, or it just throws you a battle.

@Wayneisboss any amount of content is more than I do. I'm really happy I was on a weird nostalgia kick a few months ago looking up the old digimon games and found your reviews. I'm happy to see anyone making indepth reviews of obscure media.
I remember having all of the digivice toys growing up but not knowing they were supposed to be games so I just pressed the buttons haha

Just got home from a 12 hour shift and watched the video. I was able to pre order an orange one becore they were out of stock! I'm glad I watched the video I wouldn't have seen these before they sold out otherwise.

I just wish they made a personal vpet with this design instead of one where youre essentially playing as another human character from the anime, *I* want to be the digidestined
If it works like the Color Pendulums, the steps are counted by an accelerometer and not a physical pedometer any more. Interestingly enough, they added a ballbearing just for tactile feedback, and that's where the sound comes from.
The presentation of the device is undeniably amazing. They did a rather phenomenal job with combining a more traditional pedometer adventure game Digivice with the bells and whistles of an SCSA Digivice. However, I really wish they put in just a little bit more effort into the gameplay. The US/Western Digivice toys always had really good gameplay, and it's a shame that the developers didn't borrow more from them.
As-is, there really is little to no strategy involved, and it's just mindless grinding. Even with previous Digivice toys, we had a choice of multiple actions to take each turn such as swapping between partners or digivolving one level. The only real gameplay that's on offer takes the form of the three mini-games that are pretty much always winnable if you aren't distracted.
Also wish they tied unlocking digivolutions to the story. There really is no reason to swap partners after unlocking all the digivolutions of one partner. Having digivolutions tied to story progression would have made the experience even more accurate and added even more motivation to progress through the story. While cute, the event scenes and unlockables are really just filler with no impact on the gameplay whatsoever...
There are also the little things that make no sense like not allowing you to swap partners when you see that your currently selected digimon isn't powerful enough or when you have the green phone item that make the experience a little bit more tedious than necessary.
Theres definitely room for improvement, but I'm not sure if they'll bother when it comes to future adaptations and releases like with the inevitable D-3.

This seems like a step in the right direction for V-Pets interactivity. The one thing that has always kind of disappointed me, was how simple a lot of them are. Feeding them at specific times and do the same simple minigames over and over isn't that engaging to me and can't keep my attention for long. If this leads to more varied gameplay, I am all for it.
Im gonna have to buy one second hand i really hate that these companies don't make anywhere nearly enough for their fans.
Tai is my favorite character but blue is my favorite color so… had to order Matt’s digivice lol. It’s from 2nd wave so still waiting for it to ship.
I've been carrying a digimon vpet with me for 4 years now, i go from a pendulum to an X to a DM20 to a color doesn't matter it's basically what i feel like running at any given time, to me Digimon is all about the vpets, i never cared for these anime digivices or anything else Digimon related, but i might hunt one of these down, they look awesome for what they are.
This seems a lot like the old Digivice toy with a modernized "story" for it, including the shaking sound. The original ones just had a simplified thing of move to the next region after you beat the boss in an area, the first several ones were in a set order as you unlock higher levels of digivolution and friend collections, though only the Digidestined ones.
I remember that some friends at the time were irritated because while I had the second version of them in the US that added Gatomon and a few other things from late on, and while it worked with the first and later versions, some of the third version ones didn't work with it. I also had one of the 02 and D-Terminal (got that one later on when it was on clearance).
I'm from the UK and they didn't deliver here so i had to go through a 3rd party seller on ebay who shipped it to me from Japan. Was a bit more expensive but this was something i've always wanted as a kid lmao

hey Wayne, very informative video! Gotta ask, how did you get your anniversairy Digivice already? Cuz according to the shipping date it should be given out in october or november and you got it basically two months earlier then it was noted.

I just spent hundreds of dollars on the Retroid Pocket 4 so I can play PS2 and GameCube games on the go so unfortunately I can't get this one for now and sadly these gadgets are known to increase in value
Zennin is really good, I got the ken d3 from them and a medabot meda watch., I’m surprised the digivice has english text, may actually play with it now, I ordered both matt and tai’s from p bandai and got the standard one from zennin, none has shipped as of yet XD
