  • The Robbinsdale Police Department recently swore in two new officers. One of those officers will get to serve the city he grew up in.
Tony Heifort was sworn in Oct. 3. He was chosen out of 123 candidates. The North Hennepin Community College graduate grew up near 43rd and Toledo Avenues.
While patrolling the streets, Heifort recalls memories about up growing up in Robbinsdale. Rolling down West Broadway, he pointed out several businesses.
"Dairy Queen has always been here. When we were kids, we'd come up to the Dairy Queen," he said.
Heifort attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and played baseball for the city. Growing up, he admired officers who patrolled his neighborhood.
"We knew all the police when we were growing up. They would stop by and give us the football cards. I institute that in my police work," Heifort said.
Those earlier contacts with police helped fuel his passion to become a police officer. But it took awhile to make his dream come true. He worked as a banker for 10 years before pursuing law enforcement.
"While in banking, I got some customer service skills and was able to build off of that," explained Heifort. "So, I go into situations in Robbinsdale and I believe take care of situations by just talking to people."
Heifort says it's an honor to work in the city he grew up in.
"Coming back to the serve in the community I grew up in, it's a blessing."
