Also, out of Haaland's 53 goals, 8 were penalties and 38 were one touch goals where he waited for a lucky deflection or a teammates assist (mostly from Grealish and De Bruyne).
As a comparison, out of 37 goals, Messi scored 4 penalties and 7 one touch goals BUT 3 of them were from outside the box. He scored 4 free kicks and 7 goals from outside the box.
Haaland is a goalscorer with great finishing and positionning skills, he scores with almost every opportunity he gets. But Messi is different, he creates the opportunity. I still believe that Haaland is a better goalscorer than Messi tho, but Messi is close. With this in mind, by taking into account all the others aspect of football (playmaking, assist, leadership etc.), Messi is overall better this season.
Sure, but Haaland plays for a far worse national team, and PSG met far easier opponents in France than Man City met in England.
So there is alot of factors to weigh in for or against.
In the end Messi will win it this time due to the world cup. But given he went to the MLS, he won't get the reward in the years to come...

Haaland can’t be judged on WC since he did not participate.
Messi can be judged on both international level and club level. At international level he had a very strong season, but on club level it was an average season due to early UCL exit.
We must also remember Balon dOr has turned into a goalscoring award, so no one will actually care about the fact that Haaland is just a goalscorer.
I feel Haaland will take the Balon dOr this time.

I think the Laureus Award as Sportsman of the Year should count as a major individual trophy, especially since only one football player has ever won (and did it twice). Stat-wise they both have similar impact in the game, the difference is that Haaland is much more a finisher/consolidator of chances as a goalscorer while Messi is pretty 50/50 between creating and finishing. It can't be understated how many more big chances Messi is responsible for creating in the field (more than 3x Haaland's). So if there's still in doubt about who's more deserving of recognition, we're comparing a young freakish athlete at the peak of his powers against an ageing one with a fraction of the athleticism and in the twilight of his career

Or was he simply placed with the perfect team at the perfect time that suited his position and talents perfectly and simply rode the Man City train all the way to the title? Could they have won without him? How essential was Haaland to their successful campaign? How much did he contribute to his team's success? I think the truth is a little bit of both. But you could easily say that Haaland was the missing piece that Guardiola desperately needed to finally get his Man City team over the hump and win the Champions League. To put it this way, if there's no Messi at the World Cup last year, then Haaland is absolutely winning the Ballon d'Or.
But there was a World Cup, and Messi was absolutely mesmerizing. The World Cup is an incredibly difficult tournament and the highest profile football in the world. The pressure is enormous. It's nearly impossible to win. Even with an absolutely fantastic team it is still not certain of success. Your country would be fortunate to win even ONCE in the entire history of the tournament. What Messi did with Argentina in 2022 is comparable to what Maradona did at the '86 World Cup. And that's really saying something because '86 Maradona might possibly be the greatest individual footballing performance in any competition, ever.
I don't think you can say definitively that one tournament is "better" or more difficult than the other. The Champions League and World Cup are both equally incredibly difficult tournaments. It comes down to player performances in these two tournaments.
Haaland is an amazing player on an amazing team and was a key factor in their amazing success winning a freaking Treble, the hardest feat in club football anywhere. But what Messi did with Argentina was historic. The man was on a mission. Something we should feel lucky to have witnessed in our lifetime. Messi winning the Ballon d'Or is football saying thank you.
