    Quick Question (for Mental Floss or Scishow): Why is my vision blurry for a short time in the morning, even if I open my eyes widely?

    • @joscythe556
      @joscythe556 Před 9 lety +1

      HajoBenzin1 because your eyes are dried out

    • @HajoBenzin1
      @HajoBenzin1 Před 9 lety

      And why is my vision blurry then? Because they are dried out doesn't explain the blur. Why is it very often only on one eye blurry, but not the other eye? Why is it dried out while I closed my eyes the whole time during sleep (so technically they must be very hydrous)

    • @joscythe556
      @joscythe556 Před 9 lety +2

      They dry out because you need to move your eyelids to actively "spread" moisture over your cornea, otherwise the moisture will not cover it uniformly.
      Also the cornea is not very transparent and glossy by itself, it needs to be wet to be easy to see through.
      You cab compare it to dull paint on a car which also becomes glossy when it is wet for example

    • @HajoBenzin1
      @HajoBenzin1 Před 9 lety +1

      oh ok :) so eye movement during REM sleep isnt enough? and does the body not blink the whole time while sleeping? this would "spread" the moisture evenly I think

    What's the difference between Foaming Soap or Normal Soap? Is one better to use for you hands or better price wise?

    • @justmethatsfine5688
      @justmethatsfine5688 Před 9 lety +4

      Foaming soap has water added to it and a pump that aerates as you push it to produce the foam. Your essentially getting half the soap for three times the price. If you want foamy soap just by one that you can unscrew the top, then refill it with 2 parts cheapest hand soap you can find and 1 part water.

    I have a question that's difficult to ask. I wear glasses, and when I don't, I cannot see far away. When I'm not wearing my glasses and I look in a mirror, even with my face pressed to the glass, objects far away are blurry, as if I were trying to look at them normally without glasses or the mirror. However, when I do the same thing, but replace the glass with my phones camera, I'm able to see the objects as if I'm wearing my glasses. It's a clear picture unlike the blurry mess in the mirror. My question is, why is this?

    Big Question: Why are slices of bread shaped the way they are?
    Sandwich bread; most varieties seem to be somewhat square shaped, but with a kind of indent and then a puffy hat on top. What causes that indent? If it has to do with pan shape/size, why isn't the pan sized large enough to contain the whole loaf?

    • @MegaAwesomeNick
      @MegaAwesomeNick Před 9 lety

      Aidan Skye Yeast is used to make the dough rise giving it the puffy top when it reaches the top of the pan its cooked in. The indent is a cut in the dough the baker intentionally puts in to let excess air escape so it doesn't form super large air pockets. you wouldn't want a slice of bread with a huge hole in the middle. the cut also gives room for the dough to expand. the reason for the smaller pan instead of one large enough to contain the whole loaf is simply people like the look of the puffy top.

    Thanks, Craig. I keep a jar of Gari (pickled ginger) in my 'fridge not only for when I make sushi, but also instead of antacid pills! Just eat a few slices of Gari and the upset is relieved. Not to mention how fresh and clean my mouth feels! ;-)
    I have NO idea why eating an acidic food (Gari) would soothe an acidic stomach.....?

    • @a.melanoleuca2247
      @a.melanoleuca2247 Před 9 lety

      It's because upset stomach is not caused by over acidic gastric fluids but actually by a deficiency. Because of the deficiency, the stomach churns the acid more to make the best use of it. The acid deficiency causes the acid to be weaker (and thus cause indigestion) so the body attempts to compensate digestion by covering the food stuff with more acid. The vinegar in gari (ガり) helps restore that acid deficiency because well, it's an acid! In fact, many home remedies advocate apple cider vinegar to treat upset stomach.

    • @Roxor128
      @Roxor128 Před 9 lety

      Mitchell Collett The eyesight problems which can be corrected by glasses are due to the geometry of the eye being not quite right for proper focus. The lenses in your glasses distort the incoming light in a way opposite to the distortions of the eye, so it ends up getting focussed onto the retina correctly.

    • @AnkhInfinitus
      @AnkhInfinitus Před 9 lety

      SomeSayExquisite How hot the rails are depends on how long the train was, but your car tires don't spend much time in contact with them. Also, the friction is rolling friction, not sliding, so it doesn't heat the tracks as much as you might think. If a hot road doesn't pop them, I don't see why hot railroad tracks would.

    • @joscythe556
      @joscythe556 Před 9 lety

      SomeSayExquisite 1. it takes a significant amount of time for the heat to be transferred to the tires, but the tires only touch the tracks for a splitsecond
      2. tires can take more heat than you think, watch some videos of burnouts or drag races, there's a lot of heat involved and the tires still won't pop until they're well worn down

      Chad Tindale There aren't height maximums because it's unlikely that someone is so tall as to not be able to fit in a harness. There are people too wide (or thick) to fit, unfortunately. At least, to fit safely. I have dated someone who was asked to get off a coaster because the safety person felt the harness wasn't coming down far enough, due to bulk. There are also almost always seat-belts if not a harness, and also head-rests (or pads) that help cushion the head in case of impact. I try to keep my head back against a head rest on all rides (as instructed), and one coaster (NY NY in Vegas) slammed my head against the head rest so hard I saw stars. I'd hate to see what happened to someone who wasn't tall enough for their head to reach the head rest. I think in general height requirements are in effect to ensure the safety of everyone on the ride.

      Simply because of their intermolecular bonds. Some elements are bonded weaker than others thus it doesn't require as much energy to cause a phase shift.

    What are misconceptions about vaccines? ( ya know the ones we gave ourselves and to our children before school starts) and where have they been this entire time of existence, why is it now that they are so important?
