Craig is my favorite host of Mental Floss
RazerH4zer Mine too.
RazerH4zer His own channel is just pure gold.
TabZa123 What's the name of it?
RazerH4zer WheezyWaiter, there is a link in the description
TabZa123 Oh yeah, thanks :)
I love Craig. Helps you learn and makes you laugh seamlessly!
I try not to eat Ginger. They're people too.
RatedNovice Your sex life isn't as (ahem) spicy as it could be.
Benjamin Alexander ;)
Benjamin Alexander So, do eating gingers removes the taste of the previous girl? Or do I need to soak the ginger in vinegar?
The correct answer is because it has no soul.
darksskull Came as fast as I could to say that.
darksskull Lies and Slander! Gingers get a freckle for every soul (or part of one) they steal.
I have no freckles :)
darksskull I can confirm this, I'm a ginger, have freckles all over my arms and legs, but not very much on my face. I haven't take many souls from the facial area :)
RedSkullington Heh
The jokes in this video are on point! Best one in a while.
My big question is: why is Acne a thing
Jack Craig The body is essentially providing a barrier between itself and the bacteria that caused the acne in the first place.
Jack Craig Because it is. Deal with it.
Yeah, I wonder do any other mammals get it?
Cian Yes, I've heard of dogs with acne.
Cian Ferrets can get black heads on their tails.
Omg, that bit at the end was actually the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life. I may have to resubscribe to Wheezywaiter just because of it.
/stares intensely at Triforce on the wall/ Who decorated the set? It looks spectacular.
I agree!
I think Mark in this video is the first time we've actually heard someone react to a comment by the host.
Quick Question (for Mental Floss or Scishow): Why is my vision blurry for a short time in the morning, even if I open my eyes widely?
HajoBenzin1 because your eyes are dried out
And why is my vision blurry then? Because they are dried out doesn't explain the blur. Why is it very often only on one eye blurry, but not the other eye? Why is it dried out while I closed my eyes the whole time during sleep (so technically they must be very hydrous)
They dry out because you need to move your eyelids to actively "spread" moisture over your cornea, otherwise the moisture will not cover it uniformly.
Also the cornea is not very transparent and glossy by itself, it needs to be wet to be easy to see through.
You cab compare it to dull paint on a car which also becomes glossy when it is wet for example
oh ok :) so eye movement during REM sleep isnt enough? and does the body not blink the whole time while sleeping? this would "spread" the moisture evenly I think
I'm not a doctor so this is just the most logical I way I can try explain it :)
I'vr never seen anyone blibk in their sleep before, have you?
Terrific subtle comedy. Enjoyed, thanks.
I know what the pickled ginger is for but I always put it right on the sushi along with a dab of wasabi. I don't care if it's not right it tastes good XD
Same 😂
Thanks! I always wondered this. Ginger is supposed to be high in some vitamin too, a superfood.
"made with the help of all of these pickled gingers" that got me, so funny
That last line was priceless.
Huh, interesting! You learn something new everyday!!!
You said a palette cleanser had to be fairly neutral tasting but citrus, vinegar and ginger are anything but neutral; they're very strong tasting.
He perfectly slipped in those jokes and had my stomach hurting! 😂
good one
Damn, this is a good channel.
Fennel is my favorite pallets cleanser
I hate when people say they hate people who ask for likes and then say like if you agree.
Like if you agree.

I like this guy
Awesome~^^ I actually commented within the first few minutes of upload!
Who has two thumbs and is going to KCON N.Y.......this guy
Mental Floss Why do your t-shirts turn inside out when you run them through the washer and dryer?
Question: (I posted this on the last video but just in case I'll post it here too) Sometimes while driving I see these black lines that seem to be somewhat reflective. When we draw near the black lines disappear revealing themselves to be just regular concrete. What is happening and is this normal?
If I have a train going right at 0.8 speed of light and within that train an object is going left at 0.8 speed of light does the object see time pass similar to the inertial frame or is there additive time dilation?
Big question. Why do bites from a mosquito swell up and itch? Also why do some people get bite more often?
You seem especially sassy today! I
I get massive headaches. So my question is there a history behind headaches and what are the scientific accomplishments found to cure them or help them?
Does ginger work after you brush your teeth?
Well i have a big question.
how tall must something be to count as a mountain?
talking about grounds, rocks ect
500ft
kristoffer hjelme There is no universal definition. 1000 or higher is considered a mountain in the US, but it is double that in the UK and the UN has a different set of criteria also. It would make a good Big Question video probably.
kristoffer hjelme It has to be 2000 Ft above ground level or greater to be considered a mountain.
I'm from Florida, anything over about 30 feet counts as a mountain in my book. :D
+Nathan Becker Could you back that up? Also, what's "ground level"?
Big Question: If I wake up late in the morning, like 10 am, should I still eat three meals or is it okay to skip breakfast? Is it unhealthy to miss a meal even if you're sleeping?
-Ryan M
What's the difference between Foaming Soap or Normal Soap? Is one better to use for you hands or better price wise?
Foaming soap has water added to it and a pump that aerates as you push it to produce the foam. Your essentially getting half the soap for three times the price. If you want foamy soap just by one that you can unscrew the top, then refill it with 2 parts cheapest hand soap you can find and 1 part water.
how about why is yawning contagious, and why do we itch when we hear about bugs.
Gargling vinegar now. This will help my social life.
I didn't know that pickled ginger was also known as gari. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!
That explains why I like pickles as a palate cleanser.
Here's my big question:
Starting at Greenwich UK, time is set at +0 GMT. When traveling west, time zones go up to -11 GMT in Alaska. When traveling east, time zones go up to +12 GMT in Russia. So where are the time zones between Russia (+12 GMT) and Alaska (-11 GMT)?
Big question. Why do people like/dislike different foods? There are some major similarities (sweet = good, bitter = bad) and we can typically tell if most foods are poisonous based on the taste. But why do people still have personal preferences?
Craig, Why do football stadiums all face north to south, instead of west to east?
Why do light bulbs that are left constantly on, last longer than ones that are turned on and off frequently?
So I should just drink vinegar when eating?
WAYY HOOOO I totally forgot I asked this question but I was so excited when I heard my name
Katie Doman yaaaaaaay you
Why does paper go translucent when water / oil is added
I have a question that's difficult to ask. I wear glasses, and when I don't, I cannot see far away. When I'm not wearing my glasses and I look in a mirror, even with my face pressed to the glass, objects far away are blurry, as if I were trying to look at them normally without glasses or the mirror. However, when I do the same thing, but replace the glass with my phones camera, I'm able to see the objects as if I'm wearing my glasses. It's a clear picture unlike the blurry mess in the mirror. My question is, why is this?
Well, this changes my sushi eating experiences.
Why do we get itchy?
actually it's ok to put the ginger directly on the sushi. its pretty common in japan to do so nowadays.
never noticed the triforce picture before
Big Question: Why are slices of bread shaped the way they are?
Sandwich bread; most varieties seem to be somewhat square shaped, but with a kind of indent and then a puffy hat on top. What causes that indent? If it has to do with pan shape/size, why isn't the pan sized large enough to contain the whole loaf?
Aidan Skye Yeast is used to make the dough rise giving it the puffy top when it reaches the top of the pan its cooked in. The indent is a cut in the dough the baker intentionally puts in to let excess air escape so it doesn't form super large air pockets. you wouldn't want a slice of bread with a huge hole in the middle. the cut also gives room for the dough to expand. the reason for the smaller pan instead of one large enough to contain the whole loaf is simply people like the look of the puffy top.
How does is money converted to different currencies?
Question: is there a major correlation between reading lips and understanding pronunciation? Like say a blind person, are they more inclined to not understand what someone is saying because he/she can't see what the person is saying? Hopefully that made sense.
does that mean just eating a pickle would work as well?
I love this show... I lost it at fatty mouth feel XD
I have a big question that I have always wondered...not to sound gross or anything but, here is the question...IF I enter a public bathroom where someone has "blown it up" and that person is sick, can their germs be transferred to me by smelling what just came out of their backside? Again, I apologize for the question but, I have always wondered. Thanks
Why does pure water change into bad (muddy) water when you add a drop of muddy water and why the muddy water doesn't change when you add pure water to it???
Also, if you put ginger on your tongue before eating the wasabi, it makes it less spicy. Or, at least, easier to handle the spicy.
I fucking love that guy
What happens when a body part falls asleep?
Why do some commercials get interrupted by other commercials after only a second of being on?
Question.
When and where did the phrase "like Christmas in July" originate?
The Google had no answers.
Why do we read from left to right?
Why do bug bites itch?
Why are bugs attracted to lights?
Why fish smell? Haven't they just came out of the water??
And now the drinking of vinegar as a palate cleanser begins
Another palate cleanser not mentioned: apples. Works very well with chocolate.
Question: How do erasers work?
What is the "New baby smell"?
Thanks, Craig. I keep a jar of Gari (pickled ginger) in my 'fridge not only for when I make sushi, but also instead of antacid pills! Just eat a few slices of Gari and the upset is relieved. Not to mention how fresh and clean my mouth feels! ;-)
I have NO idea why eating an acidic food (Gari) would soothe an acidic stomach.....?
It's because upset stomach is not caused by over acidic gastric fluids but actually by a deficiency. Because of the deficiency, the stomach churns the acid more to make the best use of it. The acid deficiency causes the acid to be weaker (and thus cause indigestion) so the body attempts to compensate digestion by covering the food stuff with more acid. The vinegar in gari (ガり) helps restore that acid deficiency because well, it's an acid! In fact, many home remedies advocate apple cider vinegar to treat upset stomach.
A. Melanoleuca Thank you so much for your informative reply! I'll stick to the Gari over apple cider vinegar, however.... ;-)
Craig is very funny.
This is a response to the buzzfeed sushi video right?
Fatty Mouth Feel is my favourite Mental Floss host.
Why do turn signals on cars never sync up with anything? Even each other?
Why does the sight/sound of running water make you have to pee?
Why does meat change colour when cooked?
How do glasses improve eyesight?
Mitchell Collett The eyesight problems which can be corrected by glasses are due to the geometry of the eye being not quite right for proper focus. The lenses in your glasses distort the incoming light in a way opposite to the distortions of the eye, so it ends up getting focussed onto the retina correctly.
Added bonus, if you eat too much sushi, it settles your stomach! Not that I've ever eaten too much sushi...
Interesting, I actually hate the ginger that comes with sushi and it's kinda a relief that I'd the vinegar that cleans, because I love vinegar
Why is everything blurry when we open our eyes underwater?
How do bicycles stay up even when no one is riding them?
Why do tires NOT pop on a vehicle when they roll over train tracks that were JUST used by a train going over 60 mph? Wouldn't the rails still be hot from the friction?
SomeSayExquisite How hot the rails are depends on how long the train was, but your car tires don't spend much time in contact with them. Also, the friction is rolling friction, not sliding, so it doesn't heat the tracks as much as you might think. If a hot road doesn't pop them, I don't see why hot railroad tracks would.
SomeSayExquisite 1. it takes a significant amount of time for the heat to be transferred to the tires, but the tires only touch the tracks for a splitsecond
2. tires can take more heat than you think, watch some videos of burnouts or drag races, there's a lot of heat involved and the tires still won't pop until they're well worn down
So basically, its the same reason some American food is served with a pickle on the side. The vinegar is a palate cleanser.
how can people have natural curly or straight hair?
Why does cutting an X on a mosquito bite make it go away?
Does this actually work
I do it all the time
jacob boyett Probably placebo effect.
jacob boyett The pain overrides the itchy feeling. This can be useful if it annoys you, but avoid causing damage to your skin.
jacob boyett Post hoc ergo propter hoc
whaatt... at the end of the video we can learn that the one cleanse the palate is vinegar ??? #mineblown#
"This has a name. Fatty mouth feel. Also my nickname in highschool"
Here's a question. Why are there height requirements on rides and roller coasters?
Pretty sure the height requirements are so they can ensure the harness will actually keep a person in the seat.
kyawhitesapphire but there are no height maximums. And not every coaster has a harness. Most adjust to the user.
Chad Tindale There aren't height maximums because it's unlikely that someone is so tall as to not be able to fit in a harness. There are people too wide (or thick) to fit, unfortunately. At least, to fit safely. I have dated someone who was asked to get off a coaster because the safety person felt the harness wasn't coming down far enough, due to bulk. There are also almost always seat-belts if not a harness, and also head-rests (or pads) that help cushion the head in case of impact. I try to keep my head back against a head rest on all rides (as instructed), and one coaster (NY NY in Vegas) slammed my head against the head rest so hard I saw stars. I'd hate to see what happened to someone who wasn't tall enough for their head to reach the head rest. I think in general height requirements are in effect to ensure the safety of everyone on the ride.
Hello

QUESTION: Why do we associate popcorn with movies?
Not having watched yet im gonna say cause its acidic
Why do elements have different melting and boiling points?
Nathan Becker answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=1006021301061
Simply because of their intermolecular bonds. Some elements are bonded weaker than others thus it doesn't require as much energy to cause a phase shift.
under 301 club! WOOOOOOOT!
What are misconceptions about vaccines? ( ya know the ones we gave ourselves and to our children before school starts) and where have they been this entire time of existence, why is it now that they are so important?
oh wow so many comments about the derogatory term for redheads. good to see it's alive and well.
I drink a lot of booze too, I feel you on that one.
