    Bonus tip: Foot brake locker- if you don't have a locker and find a tire starting to spin, gradually apply brakes while simultaneously adding throttle to maintain engine speed.. The added brake drag on the spinning tire may be enough to get through the obstacle.

      US military (smart) unimog trick exactly, when both LSDiffs need some extra help to lock. You need quality LSD's front n back and some smarts for using the best traction and outcomes of most diff types... Save some serious time n money from driveline breaks.

    One tip I learned out of necessity was that slow traction and braking can cause faster sideways slippage in some circumstances. When I was on a slope with a drop off to the passenger side. I had to stop and go back and it was wet. The vehicle, a Landcruiser, was very slowly slipping towards the drop off while I was stopped.
    I realised I couldn't reverse under slow power as this would have just allowed the vehicle to continue to slip sideways more quickly. I just had to freewheel it straight down the slope to prevent any further side slip and do a sharp lefty through the gate. Phew! made it. So what's the tip? That using traction and brakes can cause faster sideways slippage compared to the direction you wish to go in, in some circumstances.

    Good day sir. Just going to throw some stuff in as we go, so somethings might get tossed in before you address them so I'll apologize in advance for any redundancies , Thumbs out side the steering wheel is a good idea all around. When air bags ( some larger than others ) deploy they can strike the forearms with enough force to actually break your thumbs when you grip the stirring wheel. Awesome vid. I always have a come along and long heavy rope. Never had a heavy enough truck to require a heavy winch. Keep the vid coming. Thank you.

    Take a mate who is a good spotter ! I just did Mt Cole vic telegrapgh track in a y62 no mods no winch no chicken tracks.. ! All good spotters commands and it loved it !

    Interesting little thing about traction... is having the wisdom/skill/guts in keeping an all wheels line that keeps your vehicle weight balanced as best possible on all 4 wheels, (sometimes needs spotters) with just enough (pedal) momentum to get over and a little more to carry the vehicle through/over the low traction parts of the track ie, wisdom+balance/momentum=traction

    In regards to steering hand placement I've grown to appreciate the design of my Jeep steering wheel; it's open from 8 to 4 instead of 9 to 3. My racing instinct is to thumb the wheel at 9oclock (or 3oclock for RHDrivers) but I always remember to keep my thumbs out in the Jeep. 👍

    FYI the advent of power steering has eliminated broken thumbs. you will 100% break a tie rod before your thumbs. awesome information tho and im def going to use these.

    How about some advice on electronic traction aids, such as traction control and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). When you do keep them operational and when should you disable them?

      I only know from heavy vehicle experience but when wheels start to spin in mud you have to turn off traction control as it applies braking to the spinning wheel and saps power.

      Always disable traction and stability control off-roading. The moment your wheels slip you lose all guts which can be seriously dangerous if you're climbing, or mean the difference between getting bogged on the dry patch of sand or gliding over it.

      Some traction control is better than others so it all depends but as everyone been saying it will drop engine power to apply brake to the wheel without traction so can be a hindrance rather than an aid, twin diff locks will always trump it when you need them. Stability control yeah keep that off when you leave the bitumen lol

    The best tip I learnt from youtube is wearing sleeveless shirt, drive your 4wd into a mud, then snatch your mate hastily until it rolls

    If you're new to it dont get a car and go out and mod it like crazy, you cant get too far into troubke with average tyres etc but with good tryes, scruba rails and a locker you can quickly find yourself in very dangerous situations if that makes sense

    greetings from Florence Italy good evening I ask you a legitimate question if it is possible that you will be able to give me the right answer! (good morning can you tell me why many owners of 4x4 par time vehicles are called 4wd low in English! wet asphalt when it rains they insert the 4x4 hi the fast 4x4 since many 4x4 vehicles don't have a center differential??)

      G'day!
      We typically don't use high range 4WD on hard surfaces as it will bind up the transfer case - unless the vehicle has a centre differential that you can use while unlocked.
      For a part time 4WD - on the road, we will use 2WD, then off road high speed (like beach driving or desert tracks / roads) we would typically use High Range 4WD. Steep, difficult or slippery terrain like mud or rocks we would use low range 4WD.
      Some vehicles like the Toyota Prado do have the centre differential and you're able to drive in All-wheel-drive (with centre differential NOT locked, for on road) then you can select high range 4WD which will lock the centre differential.
