      It isn't an apples-to-apples comparison. The .270 Winchester is a long-action cartridge, whereas the 6.5 Creedmoor is a short-action. It would be a more legitimate comparison, in terms of consistency, to compare .270 with another long-action cartridge, or the 6.5 CM with another short-action design. 270 remains the hunting choice, as its nearly a century of superb field performance attests, but the venerable .270 offers few suitable choices for long-range precision, which is the domain of the 6.5 Creedmoor and its highly-efficient .264-caliber projectiles. A factory version of the 6.5-06 wildcat would be great, i.e., a 30-06 necked-down to .264-caliber.

    6.5 will be slightly less affected by wind, 270 has always been one of the best and still a great choice.The ELD x 147 in 6.5 is a decent hunting round but not great, the reason I standardize on it is it really is a match target long range bullet that will work for hunting medium game and dont shoot game animals at long ranges, it is not open country where I hunt mostly with exception this year I got a desert mule deer.I can shoot long range targets and coyotes at 500 yards or so with the same bullet I hunt with.I always have used 180 barnes x in my 300 mag ruger mk 2 it is such a accurate bullet.Man , looks cold up there.good show.

      129gr Solids behave more like a 180gr bullet. They are a lot longer than most 130gr cup and core bullets and retain their weight without exploding like a cup and core bullet at .270 speeds. You could shoot a 100gr .277 solid bullet if you wanted to. 140gr cup and core makes sense for the .270 if you’re trying to reduce the impact speed and retain more of the bullet core for penetration. 129gr LRX is the best of both worlds since you get speed and weight retention, with insane penetration.
      The .270 Winchester is one of the reasons why bullet makers had to up their game with bullets that will still hold together on closer range shots. It should really be classified as a magnum since its working pressure is 65,000psi and has 60gr case capacity. It even blows the back end out of Nosler Partitions on impact at close ranges, which was a significant factor in the creation of the Barnes X bullet. Nosler responded with the Accubond, and eventually the E-Tip solid. Even though I grew up on .270 Win, I’ve come to see it as overkill for close range shots. It does really well as a prairie or plains rifle where shots are at 300yds or more, which is why it was so popular out in the US Mountain West region.

The 6.5CM will definitely take game, but has a slight accuracy performance. So many projectiles are offered in .277 that for hunting purposes will definitely outperform in the hunting department over 6.5CM. Either cartridge can be setup for both long range or hunting with custom chambering barrels. But the 270 imo is better suited all around performance over the CM

There's a reason why 270 has 30% more powder charge but still can't launch higher BC bullets than 6.5cm and it's because of that 100 old SAAMI COAL spec and chamber manufacturers couldn't fit them so why even produce any. Ah! I just ordered a Ruger American Predator in 6.5 Creedmore - a friend in Utah took me out to a range and I enjoyed it so much (it was a little scary) that I bought a 10/22 and a Glock 19 when I got back home. I’ve been going to a range twice monthly, took a course and have gotten better. I wanted something with a bit more oomph, so I’ve ordered a Springfield XD40 and the Predator; I’m looking forward to shooting them when they come in and taking more advanced courses - I’m really enjoying shooting!

      Actually we can match the performance of 270 with a 6.5cm. Here's some 6.5cm 143gr ELD-X for sale that's going 2855fps and matches 270's best factory loads energy levels at hunting distances. In reality in order to really cover all their bases most 270 onwers probably own 308's too when all you need is 6.5cm because it completely replaces those calibers and saves you money in doing so. And to be fair having more money really pisses some ppl off for example look at Chuke and the way he's always buying/selling guns and he's also a 270 and 308 owner because having money must really piss him off.

    One note. As a trained ELRI shooter, we find you need to keep your rounds at a warmer, even temp to do comparisons across different calibers, or you will find that generally the larger calibers will expand disproportionately in terms of vel SD than do the smaller rounds. Also, you will obviously gain power. If we had a long (i.e. over 2,000 yards on a 338 Lap mag), we’d lay the magazines in the sun for at least 30 min. The increases were significant- especially in strong sun.

    They both are good rounds guys, keep in mind they were both originally designed for different thing. The .270 was designed for hunting from the git go. The Creedmoor was designed as a target cartridge that is also used for hunting. Obviously by the reaction of your test media, the .270 has more power, as it should with a bigger bore and boiler room, and higher velocity. The Creedmoor is a smaller diameter and cartridge, less power but very good ballistics. Its going to come down to personal preference. If I was shooting a prone match at 600 yards I would probably shoot the Creedmoor or the old standard. 308 Winchester. For hunting medium game though, I would pick the .270. Strictly my personal preference.

    • @ratedredneck96
      @ratedredneck96 Před 3 lety

      @b w n that and also the .270 drops velocity faster than a 6.5 so at around 400 to 500 yards the creedmoor passes it up energy and speed wise. If you use 140gr for both, a 6.5 would hit harder at 550 yards than the .270. They are so close ballistically it just comes down to do you want the extra recoil for minimal added benefit or do you want minimal recoil, high devastation down range and powder savings if you reload.

    • @ratedredneck96
      @ratedredneck96 Před 3 lety

      @b w n most people will see the size difference and think the .270 will be so much better when really its pretty neck and neck performance wise. The .270 hits a little harder at close ranges but it honestly tears up a good bit of meat, its almost too much up close and it slows down quicker than 6.5 so it hits too hard up close for my game animal which is deer and it falls faster than 6.5 so out past 500 yards the 6.5 carries more energy than the .270 so the effective range on the 6.5 is best at both closer and longer ranges. To me that makes it the most versatile cartridge of the two hands down. You can also put a small bullet in it like the 95gr v max and varmint hunt or put the 143gr eldx and take down pretty much any animal in the US. Theres even specially made bullets for reloaders thats up into the 160 grain range which is pushing it on weight but it hits stupid hard haha i suggest you watch outdoor edventures and watch his videos. He buys bullets to reload his 6.5 creedmoor that arent very common and hunts hogs and varmint animals with them. I think 6.5 is seriously the best north american hunting rifle bullet because its not just for 1 animal or 1 category like small medium or large game. It can do it all pretty well. Bigger bullets cant kill smaller things cleanly and smaller bullets cant kill bigger things effectively, 6.5 is nuzzled softly in the middle killing everything it sees lol

    • @ratedredneck96
      @ratedredneck96 Před 3 lety

      @b w n yeah i give the edge to the creedmoor. It was designed to be a target round so they made it ridiculously accurate and flat shooting which is exactly what makes a hunting round a good hunting round so hornady made a hunting bullet for it and it changed the game whether people want to admit it or not the 6.5 creedmoor is a revolutionary bullet. Its speed doesnt matter because its sectional density and ballistic coefficient work together so well it doesnt have to leave the barrel at 3200fps to kill an animal at 450 or 500 yards. It just chugs through the wind so well it can be deadly at the lowish velocities, although 2,800 and 2,900fps from a 129gr bullet is not slow by any means. It beats the .308 at range just like it does the .270 and people who are die hard .308 fans dont want to believe a new comer done dethroned their precious bullet made back in the stone age haha i also hate the its tried and true and been killin for years. Well i hate to break it to you but these new bullets are designed with doppler radar and made to be as absolute aerodynamic as possible using methods not even thought of back then. The basic principle of bullets was known and calculated but as far as testing goes it was neanderthal compared to todays methods. Any new bullet today can be way better and age doesnt mean its superior. Haha had to get that little rant in lol i have been on a lot of creedmoor videos lately reading comments that .308 is better and 300 win mag is best and oh no this caliber that nobody can even find is the best haha when you cant even order it i dont think it matters how effective it is lol

    That's a nice rifle, Chuke. If you still have it keep me in mind, please 👍
    Thanks for this video, fellas. I love watching 6.5 Creedmoor vs 270 Win because after my grandfather and my father, I too am a 270 Win fan. Also, the 6.8 Western vs 6.5 PRC would elevate the 6.8 Western cartridge I believe.

      @@AlaskanBallistics Well, I'd like to catch someone letting go of a nice big game rifle. Finding that in Alaska could very well mean a one way trip for me. I've seriously been thinking about packing up my largest backpack and hoping a boat up there. Ever since my divorce about three years ago. That left me high & dry with only a few personal items and my clothes. I'm desperately in need of a solid big game rifle, 284 Win, 358 Win, or a 35 Whelen. But 30-06, 270 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, or 308 Win would work great. 7mm Rem mag, 300 Win mag, 300 WSM, 338 Win mag (Alaska's magnum), 338-06, 338 Federal, 300 RSM, 338 RSM, 375 Ruger, or whatever else.
      🎶 North to Alaska, going north my rush to win 🎶 😉

    I've had many calibers but I think the 270 is as close as gun manufacturers can get at capturing lightning in a bottle for 95% of people. It shoots flat, its ammo is affordable, its ammo is available, it's recoil is nothing in comparison to magnum cartridges, it is capable of taking anything on the American continent (except for maybe really large dangerous game at really close distance) in the hands of anyone who has spent quality time at the range, and it still has potential to be better, meaning a faster and more affordable twist rate for commonly sold rifles would make it capable of stabilizing and accurately shooting up to 175-180 grains of bullet, but I get it that new calibers sell better with that technology built into them instead of just selling barrels

  • @paulbrown6338
    @paulbrown6338 Před 4 lety +3

    I shoot a Remington 700 in 270 and a Ruger American Wild Thing in 6.5 Creed. with a muzzle break. The 270 does not have a break and the recoil is problem for me, Also working the bolt on that long action 270 is something I don't like. I also shoot a Ruger in 270 wsm that I put a muzzle break on. No doubt the performance of the 270 is outstanding and the 270 wsm is even better. So if you have a chance shoot both and pick what is best for you. Can't go wrong either way.

      @Dave Alexander not to disagree with you because you are right in this scenario but this was between 6.5 and .270 for hunting as I took it 4570 lever action would be a good choice

    People love their 6.5.cr's . In the field though, animals aren't going to care about Standard Deviations. With the right bullet, that 270 is going to crush through a shoulder bone much better than the 6.5. Not to mention, it's faster and has more power than the 6.5. Now if your long range hunting, and plan on making a perfect shot in the boiler room at 800 yards, that 6.5 with high b.c. bullet will work all day long..but so will the 270. I prefer hunting 500 yards in or less, not sniping out to 1000 yards.

    • @Ogreslol
      @Ogreslol Před 4 lety +1

      you realize that the 6.5 isn't far behind the .270 win in mv right? You also realize that the higher BC bullets of the 6.5 cm means that it carries velocity and energy down range better? Which roughly translates to.. it will kill animals just as well at shorter ranges and it will do it better at longer ranges.

    • @gsxr1189
      @gsxr1189 Před 4 lety

      But 270 can't shoot "the right bullet" because of it's old SAAMI COAL and chamber specs manufacturers can't fit modern bullets in 270 and that's why outside of the 170gr Berger EOL they haven't even developed any. It's a 100 year old caliber with SAAMI spec chamber dimensions and standard twist rates designed around 100 year old bullet technology. These things cripple 270's ability to capitalize on what it's potential should be but modern calibers don't have these issues and that's why these old calibers are being replaced.

      Y'all talking about "hunting" or "shooting"? I'm talking about average hunting ranges 500 yards or less where All of my shots have ever taken place. a .270 win will have higher mv and more energy " "with the right bullet" and do it better than a 6.5 all day long.

    • @gsxr1189
      @gsxr1189 Před 4 lety +1

      @@Booboo76ish I'm talking about having not a caliber who's chamber dimensions weren't SAAMI spec'd and designed around 100 year old bullet aerodynamical technology.

    • @Ogreslol
      @Ogreslol Před 4 lety +1

      @@Booboo76ish wrong... and average hunting ranges for most people is inside of 200 yards where you would be correct. The .270 win doesn't always have a higher mv and the higher grain .277 cal hunting bullets have TERRIBLY bc's which means that they lose velocity quicker than the high bc 6.5 or .264 cal bullets... I have a .270 win lol. Its a good round but imo.. inside of 300-400 yards most deer, elk, black bear sized targets aren't going to notice a difference when they get shot with either round. When you start going out further the 6.5 really shines compared to the .270 win.

  • @svartblitz2511
    @svartblitz2511 Před 3 lety +1

    The 6.5 CRDM has somewhat better BRs in general with somewhat quieter MVs. The 270 Win in general the other way around. Both chamberings are quite OK for critters of 200 - 400 lbs within 400 yards ( You can use both for heavier game but makes sense to cut the distance).
    None is a record -breaker in any way, just solid reliable performers. Personally would not use them for dangerous game, sorry if we disagree.
