  • I often paint acrylics on paper: sort of a mix of watercolour technique with traditional painting. It’s a halfway position which gives me freedom to be creative. It is very forgiving, as one can re-paint sections. This video has the usual hiccups: camera fail, I fail! I used voice over in the middle to avoid having to dump this video. I hope that’s OK with you all.
    If you would like to try this painting, go to my new “Learn to Paint” web site to download a royalty-free copy of the photograph. It's on the "Plein Air Tasmania" page.

    I have used a 2” flat brush from Reeves, called a spalter. (Not listed below because I cannot find them online.) I suggest you will find them in your local art shop.
    The rigger brush was bought in Hobart from an art supply shop. It is the "Mont Matre" brand, and it's not a top quality brush. See links below for better quality: ie stiffer, longer bristles.
    The paper I am using is Bee Paper Rough Watercolor Roll
    It is 30” x 5 yards for US$34 - bargain price.
    BUT, it’s not true watercolour paper, and I don’t really recommend it. But I’ve bought a roll so I’ll use it anyway. Maybe I’ll paint it with a gesso ground next time.

    This reference picture is much closer to what you're painting this time in Plein air. Easier to follow than the previous Plein air videos. Will try this painting this in a week or so. Thanks for uploading Shirley!

      Yes, I agree that I rarely paint the scene in front of me. I'm happy to use it for inspiration, and create a totally new image. Thank you.

    I haven't used acrylics in many years but was quite interested to see how you work on paper with a more watery approach. Wonderful! Thank you for the demonstration. Love your work, Shirley.

      Great! I’m glad you like this method. Acrylics are so versatile! I also use oils in a “watery” way. But fumes are an issue there.

    What a fantastic painting!! I loved the video - thanks for sharing your knowledge and skill in such a brilliant way! Got inspired by your beach tutorials and attempted a watercolour painting of a nearby beach last week.

    Hello Shirley it was great to see you paint with acrylics. I've not been able to get on with them because I find they dry on my palette too quickly and you did tend to spend a lot of time having to squeeze out fresh paint which I think interrupts the creative flow somewhat. I didn't quite understand the big box of paints you used towards the end. Were they a special kind of acrylic because I thought they would harden off seeing as they were in compartments with so much air space? Anyway it was a masterclass in the use of acrylics for me. 👍

      @shirleypeters  Před 4 lety

      Hi John, Thank you for your comment, and for watching my video. I agree that there is an interruption in "flow" when squeezing out the paints, compared with oils, and watercolours. With my painting style, I'm happy to let each layer dry, so there is no rush in choosing my next "move". If I want to blend, I will have those colours out together.
      As for the box of paints, this has evolved over time. (I used to use individual pots, until I discovered these compartment boxes at our local hardware.) I squeeze about half a tube of normal acrylic paint into each compartment, and mix it with enough flow medium to make it a smooth, runny consistency. I find that the paint stays wet for months, even through our hottest of summers. (40C today!!) If one of the compartments gets low, it might dry up. And to be honest, occasionally a tub will dry for no reason. I find that thin acrylic dries, but not when the tub is full (most of the time.)
      If I'm outside with the lid open, I'll spay the surface with water, but if the lid is closed I don't need to pay it any attention. It's not air tight, and there is a certain amount of air at the top of each section.
      It's a great method for plein air, as it is easy to transport.
      See this video for a bit more info: czcams.com/video/obFWRQpTAxI/video.html
      Cheers!

    Is it possible to keep the acrylic outside of the tube in a different kind of palette so you aren’t lugging around all the tubes

    • @shirleypeters
      @shirleypeters  Před měsícem

      Late reply! You can squeeze the paint into takeaway containers, or hardware storage boxes that have separate compartments. Mix each colour with an acrylic medium. Seal. That way they stay wet for weeks, sometimes months.

    Do you stretch the paper before you paint with acrylic on it

    • @shirleypeters
      @shirleypeters  Před 4 lety

      No. Paper does not need stretching, just normal tape around the sides.

  • @AliBaba-ke5jn
    @AliBaba-ke5jn Před 4 lety +1

    Hi Shirley. Not mixing your own greens? Why not use a stay wet palette?

    • @shirleypeters
      @shirleypeters  Před 4 lety +1

      Green: I'm always looking for short cuts when I'm doing plein air. And I had a couple in the box! But in watching it back, I should have dulled it down a lot more than I did. But then: on a dull day, I like to exaggerate colours! :-0
      As for a stay wet palette: I'm not a fan. I like the paint to sit on a hard plastic surface for mixing. I only use the paper plates because they are easy to clean up. My favourite is throw away plastic plates, but they are not very good for the environment. Thanks for your comment.
