Can confirm, liesa as a punisher deck is very fun to play and fair and diverse. I play her without tutors so i allways feel new on what the enermies have to pay attention. And yes i said fair cause cheaters gona get punished harder then fair player. It goes a little unfair if you also use instant spells but thats more a got ya moment.
Just look at batwing brume: you fog and punish them? Hell yeah sign me in :)
And the best, you can play kinda grouphug with cards like coveted jewel to also punish greedness.

Speaking of challenging the strats, I have a bone to pick with Arcangel Avacyn. So many people just build her to use her ability to flash in and be board protection - and I mean, sure, if you want a 5 mana indestructible spell in the command zone, go ahead! But far, far more interesting to me is to slap some deathtouch and/or lifelink on her, and then flip her yourself, by sacrificing one of your own creatures. After all, when she flips, she deals 3 damage to each other creature, and each opponent! It's not uncommon to gain upwards of 40 life from one flip, and with deathtouch you also nuke the board for everyone else. From there, it's a simple matter to voltron people out whilst they struggle to rebuild, in colours that are adept at protecting things once they're already on the board.

My Challenge the Strats is Acererak the Archlich (only 271 decks).
There are two strategies listed on the EDHREC page: Zombie Tribal and Zombie Tokens.
But...did you know that Acererak the Archlich makes an AWESOME Vehicle commander!
He comes down and can pilot a vehicle with 5 power before he is bounced back to your hand. You can do it many, many times during your turn--all you need are the cost reducers.
So, surrender to the almighty DUNGEON PILOT!

I've really enjoyed my punisher build of Liesa! Even if you don't win often, the deck always affects the game because even a 2 mana ankh of Mishra can do a ton of damage. It's a kind of stax that creates interesting situations and decision points without telling people they can't play the game.

Naban often is played as a blink deck. I decided to focus on casting my wizards and using etb bounce effects to repay them instead. This allows me to use cost reduction more effectively and found cool synergy with one speaker and future sight.

As an Illuna player, I very deliberately -didn't- go the 'only non land permanent is Omniscience' route, because that felt just too cheesey for me. I also just love mutate as a mechanic. For sure, anything thats not a mutate creature is a big scary thing I wanna flip - I got my Komas and my Vorinclexes and my Jin Gitaxiases, but its still mutate tribal. The clause for Illuna which says I can add it to my hand if I want can lead to very explosive turns where I flip a mutate creature off the Illuna trigger, add it to my hand, and then mutate it onto the stack to start flipping again but with even more effects. The thought of having a snowballing amount of mutate triggers coupled with generically scary things amassing on my board quickly just was appealing to me way more than going the combo route. I lean into my Gruul side of temur far more than my blue side.
I actually wound up -removing- Omnicience from the deck, because I realized since I wanted to pay for mutate costs so often, most of the spells I was casting didn't actually qualify for Omnicience - so when it flipped it was just this thing that painted a target on my back while not giving me any real benefit.

I really like my mazirek creatures only deck. It runs a whopping 64 other creatures, and runs an umori companion. I wouldnt say its off the beaten path, since it still likes to sacrifice, but it adds that much deckbuilding zest just because of that small restriction.
If theres a takeaway, TRY THE COMPANIONS AS DECK RESTRICTORS. You might find one you really like!
Small note about umori though: your commander counts as part of the 100 during construction, so unless your commander sports a noncreature supertype as well, umori can only be in creature decks.
    Have fun!

Vela was my second ever commander deck, which I fell into backwards looking for Dimir artifacts. Eventually leaned into a Timmy style of play - and she's probably still my fav deck. Cheating out big artifact creatures on tap/untap shenanigans, affinity, etc is so rewarding. It gets to be a beat face deck that's centered on technical sequencing & strong tribal synergies.

just chiming in about the harmonic prodigy challenge. i agree that the data as written seems to suggest the misreading of the effect, but i do think there's a lot of relevance for harmonic prodigy in that deck besides that. especially spellslinger decks that make use of cards like guttersnipe, storm-kiln artist, archmage emeritus, the list pretty much goes on and on for relevant spellslinger triggered abilities that harmonic prodigy can use. prowess can also be relevant for spellslinger decks that want to use combat as a payoff, such as eruth decks that happen to be running kami of celebration and mizzix, replica rider.
anyway, that's my 99 cents that i hope prevent having to add labman to your impulse-spellslinger deck!

Liesa lifegain is one of my favorite decks and, I have considered the punisher angle, but the only piece I actually have in from that plan is wound reflection. Reasons for this are three-fold: you tend to survive longer when you have more life and suffer fewer revenge attacks from disgruntled victims, and I just plain enjoy it this way, lifegain's a fun strategy and I love Liesa as a character.

I built a Minsc beloved ranger deck and built it as a naya sacrifice deck instead of just pumping everything. So much easier to make things into 0/0 instead of 7/7+. • @eoin5169
    @eoin5169 Před 2 lety +3

Oof, big agree on Anowon. I've been tinkering with it since it came out and the mill side of things was the first thing to start underperforming. I'm running two grave hate lands and Dauthi Voidwalker to try to stem that occasional unfortunate bleeding, and zero cards that mill for the sake of milling.
That said, I've kinda grown to like how disjointed Anowon often plays out, with the split strategy and inconsistent draw, so besides really *really* cheap rogues to pump and some ways to reuse extra turn spells, I AM running exactly three cards that use the opponent's stuff, including stuff I've accidentally milled. Reanimate, Ghoul's Night, and Predator's Hour. They're consistently SUPER fun, even if they're wildly inconsistent strategically. And y'know what? That's a trade I'm more than happy to make.
In my last game I got an Atsushi, Goldspan Dragon, Mentor of the Meek, and Sun Titan out, some of those Decayed, and kept their rotting corpses around indefinitely while attacking with them, by phasing them out with my Teferi's Veil :D Joey must be having an influence on me because I can't say no to some occasional necromancy!

i dont often play popular commanders, but when i do you can bet they all challenge the strats lol. very few of my decks follow any kind of traditional play pattern than the average person will do. i thrive on themes, jank and weird synergies.
the "popular" commanders i play are as follows with their gimmick:
my Kenrith, the Returned King deck runs all of the reverse life gain cards like Tainted Remedy, False Cure, Plague Drone, etc. and plays spells and creatures that gain people life such as Skyshroud Cutter, Centaur Peacemaker, Grollub, etc. very little of my deck's card choices appear on Kenrith's page.
my Urza, Lord High Artificer deck uses some pretty strong cards like Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Mana Drain, Force of Negation, etc. but while this might start to sound like your average busted Urza deck, the entire power is balanced and kept in check with the unique way i built the deck. the deck runs ZERO lands and relies heavily on those 0 mana artifacts and ways to get mana for little to nothing and may even take a mulligan or two just in hopes to get a single playable hand turn 1.
my Zur the Enchanter deck doesn't pull out any of the typical stuff you'd see in one. the gimmick with this one is to not take any turns at all by using cards like Chronoatog, Eater of Days, Meditate, etc. and set up highly punishing upkeep/end step triggers and goad things. effects that won't wear off or impact me until my next turn which may never come once i get going. the early game im getting out some of those punishing cards and cards to protect those, then i star skipping turns. all the while the game continues my side of the board accumulates values during my opponents turns and i play stuff during their turns.
my Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis deck i dont run all too often because its strategy is one of the more taboo ones under the right conditions where its got a light focus on land destruction and returning peoples lands to their hand, the odd land here or there and a couple cards to wipe out all, but far from the main focus which is sacrificing my own lands constantly for value and using "if my opponent has more land, search for land" and return lands from graveyard effects and play multiple lands per turn to constantly recycle and regain my resources. examples of value pieces are Zuran Orb, Excavator, Excavation, Walk the Aeons, Constant Mists. i also put in a wacky janky combo with Contested War Zone, Natural Affinity and Mirrorweave to steal all lands lol.
my Angus Mackenzie deck is a block tribal deck. i play creatures that give me great value or gives my opponents difficulty when blocked where i get ahead by being blocked; the alternative is getting in for damage so win-win. cards like Saprazzan Heir, Tangle Asp, Tolarian Entrancer, Dream Fighter, Elven Warhounds, Body of Knowledge, Gustcloak Savior, Thresher Beast. I also run a bunch of ways to either have vigilance and untap effects so that i can block or use my commanders ability if im drawing too much heat from all my combat.
none of my other commanders are all that popular but they all have their own gimmick or theme that feels different to what the average player does. i like unique ideas the most. i have a few grounded/normal decks too in case people arent looking for a mind bending deck.

Interesting with Liesa, there was actually a notable shift in her deck data in the time after she came out! I witnessed a lot of it first hand, both having a Liesa deck and playing against them in the wild, a lot of people actually started off on the group slug builds - and switched to lifegain, for various reasons. Personally, I found that the group slug angle both made people sad, but also resulted in you dying a LOT faster than other group slug decks do. Turns out, people don't like being punished for doing things!

So I've got a Livio ETB deck and his partner makes the deck Selesnya. Now I want you to guess what partner it is. Kodama springs straight to mind, right? It's his most popular match for pretty good reason. Very powerful way to abuse Livio's ETB-enabling abilities, maybe even enable a landfall subtheme to take advantage of when Kodama powers a bunch land out. Good stuff, good stuff. So anyway the other partner is Kamahl because several of these ETBs make tokens and even the ones that don't leave you with a (usually pretty small) creature. Gotta close a game somehow so why not have the big red button chilling in the zone while the 2 drop commander does the real work to be ready for that big turn?

I definitely shifted away from Shrines in my Sisay deck. I was already doing Legends but now focussed on it and it's really great. The issue of Go-Shintai of Life's Origin is the price tag at the moment. He's almost 10x as expensive as Sisay. So, as much as I'd like to build that deck, a huge chunk of my budget is sunk into the commander.
EDIT: Linvala (and Gerard) are amazing includes in that Sisay deck.

  • @mightyone3737
    @mightyone3737 Před 2 lety

I think I prefer jankier win cons over 'the proven best' in a lot of cases. I don't run Consultation in my cEDH list (in a deck where it's the go-to), my Meren deck is a Haakon combo deck, my Reaper King is just a The World Tree shell, I guess Talrand Proteus Staff is pretty typical, and infinite landfall Tatyova is pretty common too, but the way I do Tatyova ends up awfully janky anyways, since it uses lots of individually innocuous cards to do crazy things when combined. I still find that my best decks tend to draw really badly (as statistically improbably bad hands over and over and over), but my bad decks tend to draw well, go figure. Anyways, I agree that sometimes you need to add a new strategy to a deck if it's not proving pushed enough, +3 card combos are great in Casual games, but tend to be hilariously clunky in High Power or stronger, even if you can tutor the pieces up. I'll probably keep Haakon in Meren, but I'm probably going to add Protean Hulk and Razaketh to set things up quicker, as well as a Gravecrawler at some point as another infinite recursion route that works well with Protean Hulk. I think other people have found the same issue, where a deck that felt fine as a ~7 is probably a bit behind the curve there now, but this will depend on your meta I suppose. People who play casually and don't do lots of research probably haven't gotten a ton better, but I feel like with the pandemic, the average deck is probably stronger, either more interactive/disruptive or just plain faster.

Yeah that interaction with Pir and Toothy is neat, but why wouldn't you use Fierce Empath to go grab Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider and ultimate your Planeswalkers on the turn they come down instead? I just realized that I don’t really have any outside the box type of decks and I’ve built upwards of a hundred. I like archetypes that fit the commander but I play a lot of “secretly this commander” decks or cedh combos in casual shells. Like archelos splendid reclamation but it’s really a muldrotha dredge deck and tazri party tribal with najeela and derevi in it. I put my own personal spins on the archetypes with my favorite pet cards and staples. Precons however I will get a majority of the decent cards that go well from the box with the commander and tune it up with better cards or a slightly different theme like I added eldrazi and reanimate cards into anje’s madness deck and tryin/silvar became aristocat ladies secretly snapdex and Winota. So I venture off the beaten path a little but I don’t wander to far from the trail so to speak.

    Derevi Exert.
Use the on hit effect of Darevi to untap the exerted creature.
Neutralize the negative effects of Exert by using the effects of Derevi and other untap effects.
Looking forward to the return of Amonkhet. I hope they print more decent and good Exert creatures in Derevi's colors.

About Harmonic Prodigy in Eruth decks, I disagree with the premise that you and Jeremy Noell think players put it because they wrongfully think that it triggers on Eruth.
I'll use the Panharmonicon analogy with Yarok. Panharmonicon does nothing with Yarok. Yet we would all agree that it's a must have in a Yarok deck because of the rest of the ETB sources in the deck.
It's the same reason why Harmonic Prodigy is very powerful in an Eruth deck. Even by itself it's a force multiplier, it has Prowess (2x). Here's the list of things that get doubled:
Kessig Flamebreather, Guttersnipe, Storm-Kiln Artist, Archmage Emeritus, Veyran, Baral, Windrider Wizard, Talrand, Young Pyromancer, Thermo-Alchemist, Dualcaster Mage, Jori En, Murmuring Mystic, Poppet Stitcher, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Spellseeker, Krark, Niv-Mizzet-P, Adeliz, Bazaar Tradeamge, Deekah, Shipwreck Drowser, Lunar Mystic, Rockslide Sorcerer, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Elemental Expressionist (double dips on itself too, creating 4x 4/4 tokens), Burning Prophet and if you go the Orvar+cantrip variant, then it becomes bonkers.
Now of course this was an unecessary exhaustive list (albeit panning across budgets), and we have to keep the creature count low in order to have many instant/sorceries, but there's still more than a few Wizard/Shamans in that list that get auto-included anyways to warrant Harmonic Prodigy a spot.

Marath. Do-nothing. Enchantments. The deck has almost nothing that synergizes directly with Marath, has no tribal element, has no interest in 1/1s, blazes through the library like wildfire, and creates ridiculous board states. You haven't lived until you've played Naya Enchantress.
My K&T deck has no other group hug cards in it. It's designed around Brudiclad and original Trostani, though she is proving less necessary than Brudiclad. Win-cons are off the wall: make 7+ copies of Fleet Swallower, or an army of Knight Exemplars, or a horde of Embermaw Hellions.
Liesa is a great "short game" deck. :D Mine was a little too Punisher for a while; had to sub in a little more lifegain after going a couple games where casting her one last time would have ended me. It's definitely more art than science.

Y'all are really under valuing Sun Titan even in 2022. Big man breaks symmetry for white and is arguable the best white card in edh. He lets you constantly recur things like selfless spirit, ranger-captain of eos, hatebears, soul sisters, sram, etc. Basically whatever you think is the best card in white it can most likely be pulled back up by Sun Titan. Hell, he even lets you consistently get land drops with fetch lands! Sun Titan is a baller.
