We put this matchup into our head-to-head pool because they're both 100 proof bourbons with a relatively sweet flavor profile and similar price point. We wanted to see how they compared blind as EH Taylor Small Batch is incredibly difficult to find. Is Smoke Wagon Small Batch a viable alternative, or potentially even better? We find out.

In my area, you can get the Smoke Wagon somewhere between 40 and 60 dollars for the Small Batch, and the Uncut Unfiltered normally sells well above 60 bucks to almost 100 dollars. The EH Taylor is available rarely at the grocery stores if you are lucky around 80 bucks, but most liquor stores want to plush the price well above 150. If either is over 60 bucks, you might as well get a cask strength bourbon from just about any major distiller and you have a good chance to have an equal or better tasting experience.

I really like both of these. I haven’t compared the two, but I lean toward the E H Taylor. I have a backup bottle of each.
For me the Smoke Wagon Small Batch has a musky, mossy, funk to it that doesn't make it enjoyable. Surprisingly I don't pick up that same off putting profile on their Uncut-Infiltered.
Interesting. Can't say we've ever gotten that from any of the bottles we've had, but batches do differ.

Smoke Wagon SB is nowhere near as well balanced as EH Taylor BiB. IMHO Other than some Uncut Unfiltered bottles, SW is overrated...
We don't necessarily disagree about Smoke Wagon being overrated, but would have to disagree about "nowhere near as well balanced." both are around $70 in my area (socal). picked up 2 eh taylor's last week for $69.99 since hard to get. smoke wagon is all over my area.
I’ve been curious about the SW SmB. I love the UCUF. I like EHT, but it is sweeter. Not my typical flavor preference, but sometimes I like sweeter bourbon. EHT is just so hard to find, so I’ll have to pick up the SW and blind them.
As I watched this video I couldn't help wondering if maybe you mixed up your glasses, because EH Taylor is a Buffalo Trace product and that spice finish that gives the taste of a cinnamon red hot is what I love about the Smoke Wagon small batch. I can't get Smoke Wagon where I live, but my brother-in-law brought me a bottle in December and it is one of my absolute favorites. I just finished a bottle of EH Taylor Single Barrel and plan to go pick up a bottle of the small batch next week. Prices are a little higher here. The EH Taylor small batch is $90 here.
No mixups but batches of each product will differ a bit over time. At the end of the day they’re both solid and a lot of fun to compare. Cheers and thanks so much for watching!
To me the E. H. TAYLOR reminds me of cherry pie and vanilla ice cream. I've only had the Smoke Wagon uncut /unfiltered, so I can't reference the small batch.
I'm always seeing Smoke Wagon on the shelf in my area. I'm also a big fan of what they offer for the piece. Highly available and a good price gets a thumbs up for me. E.H. Taylor Small Batch I'm okay not hunting for.

Smoke Wagon small batch, is the best of the line I have had so far. Have not opened my EH Taylor yet.
Pretty looking bottles indeed. That clear bottle of SW is a beauty. Smoke Wagon SB is in my go to rotation, availability has been great, under $50 in my area, and did I mention is a good looking bottle?! Cheers!

EH Taylor absolutely dunks on Smoke Wagon. I just got a Smoke Wagon Small Batch and just by itself, I was very underwhelmed. I also have never bought EH for more than $41 and the Smoke Wagon I just got was $59. So the price doesn't help it for me. I've actually gotten 3 bottle of EH in the last year in my area but haven't seen any Smoke Wagon.
Maybe it's just the bottles we've got of each, but the margin is VERY narrow across three bottles of each now.

Thanks so much Eric! In large part that's due to our videos taking so long to record behind the scenes. They're cut and edited to look fairly seamless but we take a fair bit of time trying to make sure we get it as right as we can, knowing folks may spend their money based on something we say. No Smoke Wagon in NC as far as I know, and of course, the EH Taylor only shows up in our lottery (and I didn't get drawn early enough to get anywhere near them or the BTAC bottles).
Smoke Wagon seems bent on expanding as much as possible as quickly as possible, so hopefully the lack is solved soon.

Man the last bottle I saw at a decent price was in Nashville 🤣. I live in CT where it's outrageous think like as much as a four gate or calumet 16.
I agree that EH Taylor is worth around 50.
Oh man, in that case just pass go and head straight to the Calumet 16 or Four Gate. Much better products for the money.
@@stuffandwhiskey all good I enjoy the Calumet small batch and can find buffalo trace and eagle rare here at reasonable prices. Heck I bought a bottle of Nelson bros reserve and a eh Taylor rab this summer out there. No fomo here I can enjoy what I got access to.
Revisited EHT last night and was pleasantly surprised. I always thought it was a bit overrated, but last night made me wanting a backup bottle. We're blessed here in CA to have it on the shelf for $40 😮
If it were on the shelf for $40 here then we'd definitely keep a bottle around. Classic Buffalo Trace products being solid at retail but quite overhyped at the marked up prices.

The last time i had a pour of anything, that had a vanilla notes, was nob creek 15 year. The vanilla was way overpowering, and did really like, or care for the knob creek 15. I do like the knob creek line, except the 15. Never had what your tasting..

I used to see EH Taylor a lot but haven't seen it in years. It will be interesting to see what happens with availability with the changes to BT distributing.

Never seen a CHT for under $100, glad I didn't splurge. SWSB was not my jam, letting it sit to see if it opens up
EH Taylor is about £90-100 in London. I've had a pour and didn't really care to buy a bottle. I enjoy others for a lot less.
For me it is Smoke Wagon Small Batch all day. Better availability and mostly seen at retail in my area. EHT Small Batch you have to get lucky and happen to find it sitting behind the glass at retail price during the day. That or it is marked up to min $60.

I paid 55 bucks for the SW small batch near Nashville last year and was not impressed. A 40 dollar bottle at most. The hype eludes me. And the record, EH Taylor is in same ballpark as Eagle Rare for taste.
Re: EH Taylor being the same ballpark as Eagle Rare, is that to say that EH Taylor tastes like a $30-40 bottle or Eagle Rare tastes like a $40-50 bottle?
To me Dickel BIB is very similar to EH Taylor Small Batch

It would be hard to get a closer comparison to these two for our palates, but believe it or not, 1792 BiB is harder to get than either of these in our market. Smoke Wagon is available, EH Taylor is here and held in the back rooms, and 1792 BiB simply doesn't exist. Really wish we got more 1792 in our area for sure.
Can you add Kentucky spirit vs blanton's or rock Hill farm if possible. Kentucky spirit has similar price or proof.
We don't have a Rock Hill Farms to compare but we do have Kentucky Spirit and Blanton's. We suspect Kentucky Spirit would completely trounce Blanton's given or penchant for Turkey's profile and the proof difference, but it could make for a fun double blind as you never know what will happen when you don't know what you're sipping. Great idea!
