Technically, the UK and France started it, by carving up Arabia very, very badly. The US made it _worse_ by sticking their dicks in. The opportunity was there well in the past to make a much more stable Arabian peninsula, but that went out the window with the decision to back extremist nutters and not set borders according to ethnicity and geography, and not what was best for western powers.
No historic event happens in a vaccum, and the bullshit from those two is basically why the theocracies had power at all post colonial age. And before that, it was internal trouble that held all of Arabia back. Again stemming from religious extremism. @kauske Arabia? Iran is not in Arabia...it’s not even a part of the arab world. And Iran was never occupied by any western country, ever. It managed to defend it’s independence throughout the entire european colonialism age. I think you got your facts wrong. But what the US did do, is depose Iran democratic leader in 1953 and replace him with the Shah (king) which eventually lead to the Islamic revolution.
