    Twister is the reason after the ol "Now I lay me down to sleep" prayer I slapped on a quick "and please don't let there be any tornados"... even in the dead of winter.

    Glenn Powell is a rising star so it's good to see him get some big blockbusters under his belt. His new movie coming out this summer called Hit Man he co-wrote is pretty excellent.

    As a fan of "Twister", which is my favorite disaster movie of all time, "Twisters" is one of the most anticipated movies of 2024, and I am so down to see the movie in theaters. Gotta love "the extreme".🌪💯

    There’s one line I pick out in the trailer that has my attention. “So you guys thought you could destroy a tornado, just never got the chance…”. So I’m guessing they’ve used the Dorothy technology enough to know how the twisters work and will deploy some countermeasures to disrupt them and disperse them. If you had a way to disrupt a tornado and stop it before it reached a town or city then you could save a lot of lives and property damage. Again just a thought I had about it no concrete proof that’s what it is but I would find that interesting and a reason to make a new movie, and not just a carbon copy of the first movie. Here’s hoping 🤞

    I rememeber at the time the ad campaign was pretty much "it's Jurassic Park... but with Tornadoes!". It helped that Michael Crichton was one of the writers and Spielberg a producer (the director was Jan de Bont, of Speed and Speed 2 fame).
    Btw, if you haven't, watch "Perfect Storm". It's amazing... The special effects and the sound design hold up extremely well and it tells a genuinely touching and sad story.

    What often helps the 90s movies hold up is the mix of CGI and practical. Mixing the real with the unreal either in shot or between shots can trick your brain into it appearing more real.
    For example, as a part of a bit on Conan he bought a full size wax figure of a celebrity from a wax museum that was closing. He of course used it to prank people. For one of the pranks he had someone place their real arms (in a jacket that matched the figure’s) on the top of a bathroom stall then thrust the wax figure up so it’s torso was quickly above the stall looking down at the staffer on the toilet. Because he used a real pair of arms to precede it, for a split second my mind perceived the wax figure as real. Creepiest thing I had seen in a long time.
    Part of what breathes so much life into Swedish Chef is the muppet is paired with human hands.

    This movie worries me. I had been a scientific storm chaser for two years before Twister debuted in 1996. Suddenly, it went from a handful of chasers who knew each other and attended a backyard picnic once a year to crowded roadways, 150-200 cars in caravans around tornado-producing storms, and an annual convention.
    Then came hotshots, stupid 'nader tricks, and fatalities in our community.
    Now we have Twisters and art reflects life again. The caricature of the chasers the first movie created are now featured in the sequel; the anchored chase vehicle for "intercepts", goofy, bigger than life chasers with catch phrases (please tell me I don't have to call out specific individuals) and storm chasers dying.
    I knew three chasers that died in 2013, they were the ones that changed with the times, moving from their backyard cookout to hosting the convention. I place a cheeseburger on my dash when I go chasing to remind myself what we lost.
    But it looks like Twisters will be a celebration of excess, and I expect my days of chasing to fall by the roadside in it's aftermath.

    I just went home for a visit back in December. And while the wrap party for this movie had just happened days before I got home, there was still a chunk of 17th street in my home town that was shut down from where they had blown down a few buildings for the wreckage scenes. Including an old wooden two story bar called the Wan Dora, and a laundromat next door which had both been run down for years, along with some surrounding houses. Can't wait to see if I recognize it in the movie. Same town Cleavon Little (Blazing Saddles) and Lee Pace (The Hobbit and Guardians of the Galaxy) were born in too, so that's kinda cool.

    a big thing to note about the trailer is it has a old looking Dorothy with the number five on it. if you watch the original film Jo states they built 4 of them, it also features a seal of a Oklahoma collage on the side, the same one as on the original 4 Dorothy's. in the original film, Dorothy 1 ends up destroyed by being thrown upside down in Jo's jeep gladiator honcho, Dorothy 2 is swept out the back of Bills truck by a telephone pole while intercepting a tornado on the hill, Dorothy 3 is knocked over by a tree thrown by an f5 tornado and Dorothy 4 is sucked up by the f5 along with bills truck.

    Twister was one of those films that was often on repeat when I was little. I remember the VHS having this weird Tasmanian devil cartoon scene right before the movie started. The 90s just had some great films, and to say what many say already, "They just don't make them like that anymore." Twister, Jurassic Park, Speed, and many others at the time walked that line of being fun while still remaining in reality. A lot of it, I'm sure, has to do with the use of practical effects with a blend of CGI. But I also like how serious Twister took its characters and story. I mean, you have a perfect storm that is creating an insane amount of twisters, a main character who has a sixth sense for predicting storm movements, and you have a ragtag group of wild storm chasers, and yet, while watching the film, I never have that detachment from reality. If anything, it does its job so well that the film sucks you in. Pun intended.

    This one really seems more authentic with the dynamics of a tornado and how it can appear at ground level. In reality most times there is no defined separation between the funnel and the chaos around it. Certainly as you get closer. The big F4s and F5s it is difficult to see the funnel at all. The wind and chaos here look great.

  • @sol_117
    @sol_117 Před 6 měsíci

    With the VFX thing, honestly I think that the reason most people prefer the VFX of old movies is because of two things, nostalgia and the overuse of CGI these last couple of years, like back in the day it was pretty rare to watch a movie that had heavy use of CGI, and most of the time it was mixed with practical effects; nowadays CGI is so heavily used that it easier to see when something is too perfect to be real or stuff like that.

    Original was a classic. And how don't you remember it being called Dorothy? It's the whole play on the tornado thing. When Paxton passed away, a bunch of chasers did a tribute to him via the chase map they all use (it's only somewhere).
    Too bad it's a standalone, hopefully they have nods to the last movie's character (esp Paxton & Hoffman).

    In Europe, most buildings are masonry and a building over 1,000 years old is not uncommon. In the US, buildings are made of wood and it's difficult to find a building over 100 years old. Considering the risk of tornadoes, why not build with masonry?

    The reason why the tornados stand out as off is because they decided to up the ante and treat this more like a over the top disaster movie while with the original the tone was focused on being realistic. Well at least that is what the trailer is implying so at the very least I did not like this trailer we'll see how the final product turns out.

    • @Bad_Wolf_Media
      @Bad_Wolf_Media Před 6 měsíci

      The CGI isn't worse, the viewing technology is better. Most people likely saw the original film on VHS or early-generation DVD, whereas now we're getting everything is 4K or better, so the details are WAY more intense. The lower-resolution stuff can hide a lot of crimes, so you might think it's worse effects because your brain has "smoothed out" the rough spots of the original.
