I feel your pain about mismatched albums and jackets. I still go to record fairs, but I always check everything to make sure what I'm getting. The second a vendor says" you don't need to do that"... I NEED to do that. This video should serve as a warning to all new collectors to check what you're buying. Great job !
I go but scan the boxes under tables. internet has changed everything no more secrets, but £2 boxes still have surprises. And hey its all just fun and being around vinyl and music heads always a winner.
Interesting comments and I feel your frustrations. I didn't go to fairs until about five years ago when I started tiny bit of selling at them. Most of the best deals are very early before the doors open. Trading, swapping, putting things by etc. Another big glaring problem with fairs is they are often very dark indoors and/or there's nowhere to actually play them. As others here have said £1 buys are the best as there's less to lose on them. Good you made this video. Kind regards, Martin.
Spot-on about the pre-Fair deals! You need to know your prices and your limits. The best value is often in the 'all at one price' box, or on new vinyl. It can be tricky if you are looking for a specific first-press or rarity - and if you see a box of anything at all marked 'Collectable' or 'Rare'...be very, very careful!

Hi there! I've not been to a record fair for quite some time. My favourite fairs are the ones where there are plenty of bargain bins, if I can't get an armful of £1 country records I'm not a happy feller. Unfortunately, as I seem to be the only person in the UK who buys country records, most sellers don't bring their country stuff to the fairs..."Sorry mate, I've got loads of country in my lockup, but it never sells so I don't bother bringing it!" A couple of years back the online store got a massive collection of liquidated stock of those jazz records from De Agostini. They sold them as mystery bundles of 10 records for £30 initially. I took them up on the offer and got my 10 different albums (including that Wayne Shorter), but when I ordered a second batch only half were new titles. It was okay, as I sold the doubles on eBay for more than I paid. I'm no audiophile, and never will be, but they all sound absolutely fine to me. Very happy. I've got a later repress of the Exit On Coldharbour Land, but it's marvellous. While I do like some of their later albums, none of them quite live up to that first one. Very sad that Jake Black a.k.a. The Very Reverend D. Wayne Love died in 2019. I listened to a lovely programme on Radio 4 about the band coming to terms with their loss and the decision whether or not to carry on. I'm not sure if it's still available on the BBC website, but worth having a look. Maybe I'll check out a fair soon...Maybe I won't... Cheers - Hedley

Interesting video.....🤔🤔🤔 Can't say I've ever had any bad luck etc... at record fairs. I take time to inspect any potential purchase,no matter how cheap or expensive. When it comes to paying for a record etc... I don't let my heart rule my head and certainly won't let a seller hold me to ransome. I love record fairs 👍👍👍 Liked and subscribed.

This is interesting to hear. I do go to record fairs a few times a year and usually get some decent stuff but some of the prices are a little silly. Fortunately where I live there are three very good second hand stores plus a couple of flea markets who never fail to come up with the goods.
Bummer mate, you've got the same luck as me, been stung a few times by sellers, I examine my purchases well before I head to the next stall. I'm an Elvis fan, and bought three Japanese Pressings, all bad sound quality and weren't cheap ffs😂, I think I'll be avoiding his stall from now on. I don’t often bother with record fairs these days, I picked up some real bargains at one in Hull a few years back, but never really found much I wanted at the right price. Not sure exactly where you are but my mate Chris runs a record stall at Bury St. Edmunds market on a Wednesday and Saturday (and Ely on Sunday). He’s got some great stuff - I spend way too much time (and money!) over there.

When he had knee surgery last year I helped him on the stall for about 3 weeks as he couldn’t carry all the heavy boxes of records etc. I absolutely loved it!! I wouldn’t take any money, so he gave me a load of records he knew I was after as a thank you - that was the best!! 😃 anyway might see you over there sometime cheers!
New subscriber here. It’s always hard to examine records at record fairs. The good part is that you have so many to choose from instead of going from store to store. No excuse for that warped LP. That Alabama 3 has never been released on vinyl here in the states. Nice finds .
The golden age of record fairs is definitely gone now. (Like record shops tbh). I used to go to the big London fair at Olympia but that's downsized and moved out to Harrow now. It ain't the same.
Record Fairs were killed in the main, by unscrupulous greedy organisers, charging dealers top wack for their stalls without doing little promotion for the event to bring record buyers in to the event. Rob Lythal of V.I.P Fairs being by far the worst. Dealers pull out of doing fairs due to the horrendous costs involved with hiring a stall, which means with less and less stalls, therefore the average record buyers stops going, leaving just a hard core of collectors attending said fairs. I did a lot of Fairs as a seller in the 80s and 90s. Not done one since 2001. Nick Duckett of Thames Valley Record Fairs was almost as bad. The hapless Sidney DeLara of USR Fairs took over Duckett's circuit some years back, but the advertising he does is still p*ss poor.
Hi Chris. I'm not a big fan of record fairs either. I find most of them too overwhelming. I'd rather dig around in a charity shop and see what I can come up with. I remember the Alabama 3 being really excellent. Good viewing figures on this video, looks like you've struck a chord.
I've been to only one record fair. I came across a Sandy Denny & The Strawbs double album for a reasonable price. I asked if I needed to check the condition. The seller said, "It's like new". So, OK I purchased it. When I got home I found that one of the records had a deep scratch through the entire length of the record making it unplayable. Now I blame myself for not checking but the casual dishonesty that exists in these fairs is much too common. The problem is that once the fair is over these guys are gone and tracking them down to return it is is practically impossible. So, like you said, "Lesson learned".

Sorry you had mixed luck at a fair. I've had a few bad experiences at fairs but have managed to find a few good sellers who I buy from regularly, who would take back records if there were any problems. I have picked-up a few of the Diagostini magazine jazz albums and they all sound pretty good and are OK if you can get them cheap. You might try a clamp on your turntable to flatten a warped record. I have one made by Michell that tightens around the spindle and can reduce a lot of warpage. Cheers Dale

I just bought a US copy of the first Pentangle LP, but i had a UK gatefold which i lost moving from NSW back to Victoria about twenty years ago, lost a few good things in that move, .....id pe pissed off too, buying warped albums is real annoying
Charity shops can be great for CDs/DVDs but the pricing of vinyl is often bizarre - a shop near me was trying to sell a tatty Beatles LP sleeve (acknowledging it was sleeve only - no record) for £7.50 recently. Anything potentially decent on vinyl is invariably trashed - presumably the 'good stuff' goes online or to dealers?
I was interested in hearing your comments about record fairs. Yes, a lot of stuff is over-priced, but there are some bargains to be had on new sealed albums. I would never spend a lot on a second-hand item.

I agree , record fairs are nice to attend BUT all the points youve mentioned are true. Its a shame because not all dealers are like how youve highlighted and they tend to loose out. I use a record shop and the owner told me 3 guys come in regular and buy loads off him as per the price listed but double it when they sell at fairs..in their words "easy money"...Always work to your budget and no matter how good/rare a record you spot be prepared to walk away and dont pay inflated prices..
First time watching your video. Love the background Jamaican tunes. From my experience there has not been much worth buying at record shows for years. I guess if one is willing to pony up the cash for a collectible record that’s great but I typically don’t enjoy them like I used to. I haven’t completely written them off but I generally avoid them.

Yes your right with speak no evil. Worth maybe 10-15. Great lp. Came with a mag. Fab deep purple lp. But Frankenstein copy shame but if you got for a good price. He should know what he’s selling. Fantastic pentangle lp. Shame about the warp.
Couldn’t agree more. They’re often not a relaxed enough environment for my record buying liking. Plus you’ve got to have your wits about you because of the potential for scurrilous swines selling tat at inflated prices.
Sorry mate about the Purple LP. but flating records nowdays is very easy. 10 pounds normally. Just check on line or some good records shop. if is just warped that is not a problem. if, however, it is burned or deformed by direct heat, then there is nothing you can do

actually I like going to record fairs but haven't been to one in two years because of covid. The buyers and sellers are both trying to rip off each other. But fairsnear me are held in a rather small hall that has poor ventilation and it gets hot and musty in there.
I attend ALL kinds of collectible shows...including record shows. I learned LONG ago to thoroughly inspect EVERYTHING before I buy it. Always check to EVEN see if the record inside IS even the proper record. I would take the warped record BACK to the dealer. and INSIST he takes it back. Odds are, IF he's a decent person - he will. Whenever I am at a show as a dealer, I guarantee all my sales and tell people to bring it back to the next show as I will HAPPILY take it back. I point out EVERY defect of the merchandise to people BEFORE they buy it from me, because I don't want no shit from them in the future. I rarely have anyone return anything back to me..... In fact, ONCE I SHOW the person ALL the defects, if they start to waffle, him & haw, or show me any signs that they may not be happy with it - I WILL take it out of their hands and tell them, "Sorry...I don't think this record is right for you. I'd rather you NOT buy it from me." and then I put aside. I do this with ALL the collectibles I sell. I'd rather NOT make the sale, and save myself the pain and drama in the future.
Good video. I go to record shows JUST to look for deals and if I search enough I find good deals everytime. Are there items that are over priced? Sure, but that's between the seller and buyer I guess. Could the blue note have part of a box set?
I don't go to record fairs. I don't think I would like them. I just go to record shops all up and down the country, from London to Scotland, Bristol, Wales and Plymouth as well as Exeter and Newton Abbot. I love the reggae tune on the back ground. I have that version of I'll be around aswell. I like different types of music. My favourite Deep Purple Album is shades of Deep Purple. I love jazz and punk rock as my type of music. I think record fairs are over the top with qeues of people who are not real vinyl lovers swamping in to buy what is commercially known to everyone. That's boring to me. These are the same people who go to HMV.
If it is visibly warped you don't need to play it - just look at it. 'Caveat emptor' in this case, surely? And some warps can be heat-treated though it is a tricky business, and not for the faint-hearted if the disc is valuable.
Hey Chris I feel your pain. I went to a fair in Leamington last year, found a Nick Drake comp from the 80s, turns out it was a horrible bootleg and sounded awful.Also an OG Vertigo copy of Gasoline Alley, Rod Stewart, looked fine in the low light of the fair, got it home and it was thrashed. Yup, lessons learnt for sure.It does make you question the integrity of some of those vendors. I have a feeling my Book of Talesyn is also on Heritage, but has the original sleeve..I'll have to check it out. All the best.
Shame about the Blue Note album but if it still sounds good that's fine...generally I don't buy european Jazz vinyl albums as so many are Digital to Vinyl copies Di Agostini is one there are others, the USA market does not allow that (digital copies of original masters) Originals are like hens teeth..!!. Different rules in the EU. Nice to hear that Suffolk accent...
Don't like those fairs either. Those traders know the prices and there are some dishonest traders selling bootlegs for original money. But bottom like is it's too expensive. And they srew you over and the next day they are gone. I rather stick to my local shops and thrift stores. They will not screw you because you can go back. And they want a good relationship with you.
Bad luck on a record shopping spree can befall anyone. I guess the big drawback in this case is that you spent so much on them. That would be very disappointing I agree. I've come home to find all manor of issues with records I've bought from car boot sales or charity shops, but if I've spent only a few quid it's not such a big deal. Better luck next time.
Have you played the warped record ? Many look awful but play OK. I've had too many warped records destroyed by fancy flattening machines that I don't bother any more. Bottom line is don't believe what vendors say, many are clueless, many downright deceiving ! Caveat emptor !
Hi, I would suggest sending your record off to a guy on eBay who offers a record flattening service. It will cost a tenner, and it really works. He sorted out a Panama Jug Band album for myself recently. Secondly I run Colchester Fair and would say it's of medium size, with tons of bargins with lots of £1 to £4 albums. There's vinyl from Country, Prog, Folk, Jazz, we even have an Indie specialist

Been to the biggest record fair in the world this year, stuff was priced very reasonably. Made some good deals on rare & nice records.

The deagostini collection came out fortnightly for almost 3 years. Most of them were fantastic pressings.

Sorry mate about the Purple LP. but flating records nowdays is very easy. 10 pounds normally. Just check on line or some good records shop. if is just warped that is not a problem. if, however, it is burned or deformed by direct heat, then there is nothing you can do
Hi ,yes I'm thinking about it but it is a bad warp,a flatner might help but not sure ,I have since replaced that album ,still have it as it's a real true UK 1st press without sheltamly credit ,so rare ish

actually I like going to record fairs but haven't been to one in two years because of covid. The buyers and sellers are both trying to rip off each other. But fairsnear me are held in a rather small hall that has poor ventilation and it gets hot and musty in there.
I attend ALL kinds of collectible shows...including record shows. I learned LONG ago to thoroughly inspect EVERYTHING before I buy it. Always check to EVEN see if the record inside IS even the proper record. I would take the warped record BACK to the dealer. and INSIST he takes it back. Odds are, IF he's a decent person - he will.
Whenever I am at a show as a dealer, I guarantee all my sales and tell people to bring it back to the next show as I will HAPPILY take it back. I point out EVERY defect of the merchandise to people BEFORE they buy it from me, because I don't want no shit from them in the future. I rarely have anyone return anything back to me.....
In fact, ONCE I SHOW the person ALL the defects, if they start to waffle, him & haw, or show me any signs that they may not be happy with it - I WILL take it out of their hands and tell them, "Sorry...I don't think this record is right for you. I'd rather you NOT buy it from me." and then I put aside. I do this with ALL the collectibles I sell. I'd rather NOT make the sale, and save myself the pain and drama in the future.
Good video. I go to record shows JUST to look for deals and if I search enough I find good deals everytime. Are there items that are over priced? Sure, but that's between the seller and buyer I guess. Could the blue note have part of a box set?

I don't go to record fairs. I don't think I would like them. I just go to record shops all up and down the country, from London to Scotland, Bristol, Wales and Plymouth as well as Exeter and Newton Abbot. I love the reggae tune on the back ground. I have that version of I'll be around aswell. I like different types of music. My favourite Deep Purple Album is shades of Deep Purple. I love jazz and punk rock as my type of music. I think record fairs are over the top with qeues of people who are not real vinyl lovers swamping in to buy what is commercially known to everyone. That's boring to me. These are the same people who go to HMV.

As for the 'warped' LP, if the dealer hasnt played the record, how would he know its warped?
The dealer SAID it would play well.
If it is visibly warped you don't need to play it - just look at it. 'Caveat emptor' in this case, surely? And some warps can be heat-treated though it is a tricky business, and not for the faint-hearted if the disc is valuable.

I feel your pain.
I went to a fair in Leamington last year, found a Nick Drake comp from the 80s, turns out it was a horrible bootleg and sounded awful.Also an OG Vertigo copy of Gasoline Alley, Rod Stewart, looked fine in the low light of the fair, got it home and it was thrashed.
Yup, lessons learnt for sure.It does make you question the integrity of some of those vendors.
I have a feeling my Book of Talesyn is also on Heritage, but has the original sleeve..I'll have to check it out.

Shame about the Blue Note album but if it still sounds good that's fine...generally I don't buy european Jazz vinyl albums as so many are Digital to Vinyl copies Di Agostini is one there are others, the USA market does not allow that (digital copies of original masters) Originals are like hens teeth..!!. Different rules in the EU. Nice to hear that Suffolk accent...

Don't like those fairs either. Those traders know the prices and there are some dishonest traders selling bootlegs for original money. But bottom like is it's too expensive.
And they srew you over and the next day they are gone. I rather stick to my local shops and thrift stores. They will not screw you because you can go back. And they want a good relationship with you.

Bad luck on a record shopping spree can befall anyone. I guess the big drawback in this case is that you spent so much on them. That would be very disappointing I agree. I've come home to find all manor of issues with records I've bought from car boot sales or charity shops, but if I've spent only a few quid it's not such a big deal. Better luck next time.

Have you played the warped record ? Many look awful but play OK. I've had too many warped records destroyed by fancy flattening machines that I don't bother any more. Bottom line is don't believe what vendors say, many are clueless, many downright deceiving ! Caveat emptor !

I would suggest sending your record off to a guy on eBay who offers a record flattening service. It will cost a tenner, and it really works. He sorted out a Panama Jug Band album for myself recently.
Secondly I run Colchester Fair and would say it's of medium size, with tons of bargins with lots of £1 to £4 albums. There's vinyl from Country, Prog, Folk, Jazz, we even have an Indie specialist
