I really enjoyed the album version of this song and came here to see the performance. Still fun but this live recording highlights the limitations of her singing ability and vocal range. Without the backing vocalist tracks supporting, you would really be able to hear it for what it is. This is less singing and more talking in key, with the key of the song really being too high for her vocal range as she is really straining to say the higher notes.

No, this is not city pop. And she is not Japanese.
@@bluepandaman Both of the statements you make are true. But I used to live in Japan and in Korea, and this song most definitely has a J-Pop (not K-Pop) vibe. The synthesizers, the lead vocals with the background vocals blending together at the bridge ("Recognize")-- it's very J-Pop (specifically 80's city pop).

@@steveort2105 having or knowing the genre helps people find more music that they'll like. Categorizing isn't an inherently bed thing. I like x, this has elements of x but also y. I find I like y, I look for more bands with elements of y. now I'm not stuck listening to the same 4 bands I've been listening to since high school.

I lucked out and got to see them at a Small theater on Cape Cod not too long before lockdown and they were so lovely. Some bands are 'studio bands' and some are 'live bands' if you know what I mean and they surprised me by being the latter. Also I got a supremely cute tee shirt out of it. They are playing a festival in a few months with another great live, Florence and the Machine. If you are reading this and have the means See. That. Show.

I am old, and I only like a few of the new bands. But I love this song. Performing live, they are still interesting and joyful. Reminds me of actually the early 90s when I would go to a club and hear esoteric new bands in the Bay Area. This band would have fit right in. Such talent!
