  • In this week's hottest collab, Patrick Adair and The Waterjet Channel join together to design a ring made from a 5 million year old pure Siberian mammoth tooth cut open by the waterjet. This ring also features a carbon fiber liner. Combining an ancient Siberian mammoth tooth with carbon fiber created a truly unique ring.

Sent you an email for a request on madrels. But commenting to point out something i keep seeing on the lathe. Is your mandrel warped? At first i figured the teeth may be bowed but that wouldnt make sense considering its also made on a lathe. When you were using the depth gauge, i couldnt help but wonder if a lot of what you were seeing was from a wapred mandrel or perhaps one that wasnt sitting right in the chuck. This is something i see on a lot of the videos. It shows up when you do slow motion shots. Looks to be a fraction of an inch of wobble but if you correct for it and its the mandrel thats actually bent, youre still gonna end up with an offset thickness in the ring.

When I’ve worked with mammoth tooth and ivory in the past I ALWAYS use a backer for the front AND back before I do any drilling or shaping. It can be something as simple as a piece of card stock glued to both the front and back faces, or even painters tape....
A thin front and back lamination may have given you enough stability in your drilling process. I Enjoy your videos, sorry you had some issues… I come from a background of exotic materials specifically used in the gun knife and Jewelry Industries. I’ve seen it all, from hundreds of pounds of superconductor (enough to fill several large flat rate boxes) to a dozen full length mammoth teeth being sawn and stabilized into scales for resale. So I completely understand your strugles, That material can be such a pain!
    You do Great work!

I wish you did this with some petrified wood as the liner instead of carbon fiber. Or any kind of wood...like the bog wood or something. Just to keep it natural and go with the theme. But either way really cool...and it A+ for keeping with it! I bet you wish you had the water channel cut out the blanks again!

Wanted to give a heads up on how to cut that out with better success. Gather some foam core with adhesive back: use the good kind that will not release with light mineral oil. Sandwhich the mamoth, wood, bone, etc between it, cut the first part out- appling lubricant just as you normally would. After the first part is cut out- inspect the sides for possible cracks- which would be rare. Next wipe the top of the foam core with degreaser, cleaning well and apply another clean piece of foam core on top. Clamp it all down- Cut the last. Not only does this greatly reduce vibration, and that tear out violence you mentioned but the over all pressure from your drill press clamps is evenly spread out. May not make good TV, but you can then pull the foam core aparts on each side and gently sand off or use adhesive remover to get your ring cut out free. You can also use plasticore, wood, etc but foam core works just fine.

Let me give you a really good tip for attaching things using super glue like this. I have to do it with small wood pieces all the time. You only need one other thing: blue painters tape.
    Here is what you do:
Stick a couple strips of painters tape next to one another on your scrap board.
Next cover the bottom of your workpeice with painters tape.
Next glue the two tape covered surfaces together. It will hold very well
When you are all done you just peel off the tape, no fuss with trying to fix anything.

If you slow your drill speed down and use a diamond grit hole saw you will not have so many breakages when drilling hard/fragile materials. You can also use some drill lube instead of water. You do great work, but trying this may save you some time and material cost.

Mammoth tooth is extremely hard to work with, it can crack or break very easily when drilling holes, you did the right thing to have it glued onto a piece of wood so that it can be drilled without cracking again, ask knife makers they will tell you mammoth teeth are nightmares for beginners

Hey patrick the ring turned out nice but about the tooth cutting part i have a suggetion for you .
Diamond tools dont need alot of force to do the job looking at the video i notice the water was drying out fast and you can see some smoke .the problem is you're forceing the tool instead of letting it do the work . Next time just try less force and it should be fine . Good job overall .

Your work itself is, I don't think I don't even need to point that out but I will anyways, so great, that I really wish I could afford a ring of yours =D
Just the intro itself, and not even the visuals or even music choice, just the sheer volume of it .. it's too much, I feel. It makes my speakers (or headphones) distort because it's just SO massive, wish you'd tune it down a bit, but don't change any other part of your video formula

I’m wondering why you don’t freeze the carbon fiber inserts before fitting them. They will slightly shrink when cold. Then expand and fit tighter when back at room temperature. Maybe not a great idea for this ring since it’s prone to cracking but all the other ones you have done I’m sure it would work well.
