I loved this episode.
Mahito was determined to break Yuji's spirit, i almost think because then he'd become spirituality unstable enough idle transfiguration might work.
Instead he hammered it into a blade with no grip.
Pretty sure Yujis mental state doesn´t matter when it comes to Idle transfiguration. Aslong as Sukuna is in there, it won´t work.

Went he became Sukuna Vessel he was aware of the soul automatically so became somewhat immune to it but without Sukuna his defense wouldn't be strong Mahito would just need few more touches.
Ultimately outcome wouldn't change well except nanomi dying in a domain early in the series but that it.

Fun fact: in new jujutsu kaisen game - Cursed Clash, Yuuji's ultimate attack is black flash which doesnt make sense at all but the whole game is literal trash so its not like im expecting a lot at this point
