Inside Cairo's SLUM Filled with GARBAGE | Cairo Egypt Walking Tour in 4K

- In between the iconic landmarks, mosques, and souks of Cairo lies a slum settlement that is filled with garbage. Bags and bags and bags of garbage. Appropriately nicknamed Garbage City, it’s actually called Manshiyat Naser, and it’s located just around the outskirts of Cairo’s centre, at the base of Mokattam Hill.

It’s called ‘zabbaliin quarter’ -‘garbage collectors quarters’, populated mostly by Christian Egyptians* (Copts), who have been responsible for collecting and recycling Cairo’s garbage for decades, and doing a much better job than many western countries who claim they recycle but end up in landfills. -plastic, paper, tin cans, even fish and animal bones boiled to make glue for shoe-making. A very vibrant neighbourhood that serves a purpose. The people are happy and households are mostly clean. Not a poor neighbourhood.
* note the absence of hijabs’ on women .
You are the second person on the comments who knows about this place :) kudos to you
Do they eat pork?🐷🐽🐖 #halalpork
"‘garbage collectors quarters" ? 😂 😂 Where are the "recycling plants" All I see is filthy, unhygenic, and rundown ghetto.
I see rubbish.
Thats bull.
I was in Egypt, and the cleanest nicest livable places are Copts.
I will never complain about where I live again.
😂😂😂
I know what you mean. People drop sweet wrappers and crisp packets in my street - and it makes me angry...
Me too...
@@mikeoglen6848 infuriates me to see people drop litter … seeing this video makes my anger seem a bit sad 😢
So this is what England has to prepare for . The Islamic invasion and Street conversion . Must be a great culture
The car honking alone would drive me insane.
And I thought living next to Disneyland and its fireworks were loud.
Yes, but with the traffic density it's pretty much necessary.
There's so many honks that you wouldn't even know if someone was honking at you.
I've owned my current car since November and I've still to press my horn 😅
Never drive in Cairo!
The noise would drive me batshit crazy, way more than the rubbish littered streets
For real, I had to mute it.
Idk, the chaotic, electric energy of it all... the aliveness of it... it's intoxicating to me somehow....
@@avamasqueradeit gets old real fast when you’re there long enough
It’s amazing to see that even living a life of poverty and in the “slums” the people all seem to be friendly and perfectly content with what they’re dealt. All the children even smiling and saying hello the adults look up when you walk by most of them saying hello. I am in the USA and I can tell you not many people here look up and say hello when you walk by them they either stare forward or do not even look up from their phone very few acknowledge you in such a way as most of these people did.
And, so? Say hello 1st and they answer to you "how are you", baddy or mam.
Theure smiling but they're certainly not happy or content with their lives in the slums
there's a bunch of complainers here in the USA. Mostly those who have never made it out of their state to see what the rest of the world looks like. Ignorant ingrates, many are maga.
Yeah, try walking around as a western woman and see how your treated. We wore respectful clothes, ie trousers and t shirt, but still they pester and beep and stop their vehicles. Horrible place for any woman.
Not the most uplifting place on earth but it was interesting. Makes you appreciate what you have even more. Thx
Thank you to all the hardworking people around the world who are dedicated to helping the environment while also trying to make a living. ❤
@ 8:56
Oh my gosh, I know this probably sounds silly to a lot of people but I felt so bad for that cow tied up outside the butcher's shop, with dead carcasses hanging all around him, I'm sure he knew of his demise 4:39 😢 lol 🐄 awww
I wanted to leave a comment about it too. Kinda nightmarish for the cow.
I love all animals that was so sad for that cow.
After I saw this comment I'm not watching. Luckily I scrolled through, I really have a soft spot for animals ❤
Yeah, if I was there I would end up buying the cow, but how I'd get her to the UK, who knows! Hence why I dont go these sort of places. Went Egypt years ago, never again. As women, you are seen as 'meat' and we never got left alone, always pestering you and beeping and stopping their vehicles. Was disgusting. They need to get into the 21st century. Plus I wore trousers and a t shire, with hair tied back. Islamic respect to women as its finest! Wont ever go back again.
Thank you for your comment. I felt horrible watching it.
I think what inl like most about this video is how friendly people are. Yet you go to tourist hotshots and people are so rude. Really good video . Thanks for sharing

My goodness, Egypt sure has gone down hill since the age of the Pharaohs.
Hahahaha since the age of what? Mafia? Yeah sure
Except this is Zabbaliin Quarters where garbage collection and recycling is done for decades! Raw gargabe stinks sure but it all gets sorted out in different streets, it's like a big manual labor factory, and actually they recycle EVERYTHING better than in the West where is half recycling a big LIE

@MariamYasser-ii5so I'll have to look for a video that shows another part. All I've been seeing are fish markets, which I'd never go to, and a big shopping mall, that I'd also never go to, because all of the vendors were men. Not a single woman selling merchandise. I refuse to visit any country where the men do not respect women and treat them like third class citizens.

I lived in Cairo many years ago, not a great city for a stroll. Such a pleasure now to not smell the odors and breathe the fumes, thank you for putting yourself at risk.
Is it really that bad?
No, Cairo has dirty neighborhoods and very clean neighborhoods, and its streets are like Switzerland and Germany.
There are those like me who left my family in the rich neighborhoods and preferred to stay in our old street.
Because people's spirit and kindness will not be found anywhere else.
By the way, the streets are dirty on the outside and destroyed, but the people's homes, and the people themselves, are very clean
@@honderdzeventien
@@heshamabdou5259 Why don't they take more pride in the exterior environment?
Poverty and lack of capabilities - What is strange is that you find very rich people in these neighborhoods and they remain there, and also corrupt governments that have not planned anything since 1980 and are only concerned with stealing people’s money.
The current president is completely demolishing these neighborhoods and building completely new cities for them.
But things are going slowly because of corruption and theft as well. Most of those around him are corrupt and thieves.
And he knows it

Obviously bad conditions but still has a unique charm to it. The people seem very nice, and it's cool seeing all the dense architecture together. Almost futuristic desert vibes in a way.

Visited Cairo early 2000's... never again. Unfriendly surly folk everywhere, rubbish ditto. The beautiful Nile full of floating garbage. The museum however, was a wonderful experience, beautiful inside and well organised. Alexandria a complete contrast to Cairo, it's a beautiful well run city, much friendlier folk everywhere.

I don't know about y'all, but find this so intriguing to visit. It's another world.
I was in Giza in January 2022 to see the Great Pyramids, and I did adventured for a long walk nearby my hotel near the Pyramids. What I could see was rubbish everywhere, goats(in some cases) and dust. People were friendly though. Traffic was a nightmare.
This may look like hell, but they do noble work. When i was a teenager, i worked in a factory that washed out and recycled used steel drums. humble work, but i am proud of it. And stacking steel drums three high all day long turned a skinny teen into a man.
Nobel work but they have to live there. This is where the Christians live and will never be allowed to better themselves.

And even today (thanks to your video) you almost immediately note the lack of head coverage on the women, indicating that the population is still largely Christian. If the 'western' world only knew...
Interesting, I wonder what can be done to raise awareness.

Isso a gente vê nas grandes metrópolis.
I visited Cairo and a town called Ismailia, Egypt back in 1991, because my mother married an Egyptian man and then they had two kids, and moved to Egypt, so I went to see them, and visit Egypt. It was an awesome trip! First of all, it was before the world changed, so that in itself made it great. I was able to smoke on the plane, which I enjoyed very much. We went to the Pyramids, The Egyptian Museum, to a bazaar, and for a faluka ride on the Nile. We went out to eat a few times, and just walked around downtown Cairo, too. I remember seeing goats and other animals, and I remember there being a lot of street cats. The Call to Prayer freaked me out the first time I heard it, but then I got used to it. I'm glad I went when I did, because I don't think I would be brave enough to travel anywhere in the Middle East right now. Also, I should mention, I never had to go anywhere without a family member that spoke fluent Arabic, so therefore, I never had any communication issues. I remember one day I wore a tank top and shorts, and I'll just say, if you are female, don't do that if you visit Egypt. It was not viewed as appropriate.
** I don't remember Cairo being super filthy, in general. It wasn't "clean", but I don't remember there being garbage everywhere. Could be which part of town you visit, maybe? 🤔 Or it might just be totally different today, just like the rest of the world has changed. I personally hate the way the world is today. Take me back to the 80's and 90's!
Love it !!

Inteesting how Egypt, Iraq, Iran, India were once the cradles of civilization in ancient times and more advanced than any other culture in the world and look what they have become now.
Well, they did, the cradle of civilization, but all this and the situation of these countries happened for the reason of colonialism, intervention, and even wars in the name of watermelon freedom, which means that the world is not perfect, but towards the end, and a vivid example of that is what is happening to Gaza, but at the hands of the parrot of freedom themselves. Everything is clear why these countries suffered and changed, and they are the cradle of civilization. The achievement that is happening to the world now is its end because it is a big lie really and human beings are intellectually absent......
The leadership??😂sissi
These are the countries of the owners of the old civilization who are still more advanced but humane this is a fact, and it is the important one. Humanity but actions I mean and not but repeating it like a parrot and destroying it but a reality like what the world is doing today in Gaza...
Iran? Tehran looks nothing like this. I'm not saying that Iran is perfect, but considering the isolation of the country politically and economically, Tehran is fairly advanced.

Same in Nepal, no sidewalks, just one road for cars, bikes and people(except main roads). How people can live like that? For me, I hate disorder.
Everywhere is world there are places like this if you want you can avoid or don't go in those localities !!
its because you are an idiot and you lack some knowledge. The small streets are part of ancient cities of Kathmandu valley whose town planning was done more than 3000 years ago. It is the only ancient city with ancient cultures that is still existing today. Those streets were never meant to be for driving cars. There are larger streets for chariots routes and small alleys and maze like planning for normal walking and horses. Small doors and alley ways to confuse any invading armies. Some of the best ancient and medieval towns are in Nepal. But maybe you visited those places recently which is after 2015 earthquake. There's constructions going on everywhere to rebuild the congested deep alleys with thousands of people commuting so it might feel disorderly. But once all the infrastructures and traditional Nepali aesthetics are applied, it will easily be the perfect ancient/medieval city in this modern world
How else do you expect Nepal, Egypt or any third world nation to be?
@@charlesking7331 Nepal has far higher quality of life and satisfactory lifestyle. Almost everyone have old homes in their villages between natural wonders, green hills and mountains. Almost everything will run with hydroelectricity soon. The cities are getting better with modern infrastructures and reconstructions after the recent civil war and earthquakes. It'll be a perfect place to visit/live with beautiful natural and traditional aesthetics within next 5 to 10 years.

Cool 😎 I've never seen Cairo before
ive made friends with an egypt on a videogame and he always tells me he hates the life in egypt, its very stressful for him. I can now see how he lives InshaAllah he finds peace
It depends where he lives. This is Cairo, not Egypt.
Went there a year ago as part of a 17-day tour of Egypt. As our guide explained, it's NOT GARBAGE they are collecting, sorting, and then selling, it is dry recyclable items of all sort, no food or anything that might attract rats. Entire families work in this business, the men collecting items and then selling sorted and bagged items, while women and yes children manually sort the stuff.
nice story, but its not what we call recycling, its garbage hustlers. REcycling is at totally another scale, hundreds of tonnes, not hundreds of KG, all these peopels do is sort through garbages to extract the more valuable and sell them. Air quality in CAiro is insanely bad, and most of the garbages (in mass) are burned, directly inside the city.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 they don’t sort 💩. If they did, you wouldn’t see trash literally EVERYWHERE, mixed with dead animals on the side of the road, all the way to Giza. Wake up
