  • There is a constant effort to discredit the Prophet Muhammad of divine knowledge why picking words from the Quran to show the Prophet Muhammad as someone who would lack the ability to read and write.
Why does Allah (s.w.t) call the Prophet Ummi? What does it actually mean? Who wrote the earliest Quran? - -

    Dr. `Abd al-Latif says:
"As the Holy Qur'an clearly states, the foremost duty of the Prophet (SA) was teaching the Qur'an to his followers, and it is certain that the minimum capability required for the one who wants to teach the contents of a book to others is, again as the Qur'an states explicitly, being able to make use of the pen or, at least, being able to read what has been written by the pen."

    *Meaning of Unlettered Prophet*
Holy prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam was not illiterate, he was not in need of reading & writing since nothing is hidden to him. He gets divine revelation of past, present & future from Almighty God. Therefore Unlettered here means the exalted status of holy prophet as he is the perfect manifestation of the universe...

Ja’far Ibn Muhammad As-Sufi reported that he asked Imam Al-Jawad (a.): “O son of the Messenger of God, why was the Prophet (s.) named as Ummi?” He said: “What do people say?” I said, “They say he was named as Ummi because he could not write.” Therefore he said: “They lied, God curse them for it! God clearly says in His Book: “It is He Who has raised from among those who are Ummi an Apostle from among them, who reads out to them His Signs, purifies them, and teaches them the Book and Wisdom.” (62:2) How did he teach them that which he could not do? By God, the Messenger (s.) read and wrote in 72 (or he said 73) languages. He was called Ummi because he is one of the inhabitants of Mecca, and Mecca is one of the Mothers of Cities, and this is evident from the Word of God: “That you may warn the Mother of Cities and the people around them.” (62:2) (42:7) [Ilal-ush-Shara’i of As-Saduq, Volume 1 Page 124 - 125 Hadith 1]

If you think that illiterate means those who don’t know God’s revelations, then Prophet Muhammad, pbuh was illiterate before God gave him the knowledge of the Book - Al Kitab, and we know it from the Quran.
But if you mean illiterate means who don’t know reading and writing, then definitely the Prophet was literate.
Let us take a deeper look into the verse below:
“He it is Who has sent unto the Al-Ummiyeena-الْأُمِّيِّينَ (generally translated as unlettered people) an apostle from among themselves, to convey unto them His messages, and to cause them to grow in purity, and to impart unto them the divine writ as well as wisdom - whereas before that they were true, most obviously, lost in error” ( Al Quran # 62:2 - Translation - Asad)
If unlettered is the correct meaning of the word Ummi - meaning the person does not know reading and writing, one might ask, did Allah send the Prophet only to the people who do not know reading and writing, as said in the above-mentioned verse? That doesn’t make any sense.
Hence we should consider the other meanings of the word Ummi that are befitting, as evident from other translations of verse 62:2, below:
“He it is Who raised among the inhabitants of Mecca (Ummi) a Messenger from among themselves, who recites to them His communications …….. “(Same verse translated by Shakir)
“It is He who raised a messenger from among the Gentiles (Ummi); reciting His revelations to them, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and Wisdom…..” (Translation- Safi Kaskas)
“It is He who raised a messenger, among the people who had no Scripture (Ummi), to recite His revelations to them…..” (Translation- Abdel Haleem)- I consider this translation acceptable.
“He it is Who raised amongst Al-Ummiyyun (The translator chose to leave the word as it is) a Messenger from among themselves……” (Dr. Kamal Omar)
Let us ponder over some historical evidence, as below:
Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, was hired by Khadija, a wealthy Quraish lady as her business manager. So, one could fairly assume that she must have hired the most qualified, competent person - literate up to the standard - knows reading writing, and contemporary accounting too, so that he could run her business correctly, and smoothly, which in fact, the Prophet did.
He developed his business acumen from his frequent business trips abroad with his beloved uncle Abu Talib - mostly to Syria. Abu Talib was educated, and a great poet, too. Dewan - E- Abu Talib published in Saudi Arabia is a collection of thousands of his poetry.
Abu Talib was a rich community leader. So it is quite obvious that he must have given his children a proper education, and his most beloved nephew, the Prophet, too, who was raised in his household. Educating children makes the community leader more dignified in society. Ali bin Abu Talib was educated and famous for his outstanding scholarship. To get a taste of Hazrat Ali’s eloquence please read the book - Nahjul Balagha- ‘The Pinnacle of Eloquence’ - which is a collection of his speeches and letters.
Hence the meaning of ‘Ummi’ taken as ‘unlettered’ is not a correct choice; the correct translation would be the one who is not enlightened with any Scriptural knowledge, which is further confirmed in Verse 2:78, below:
“And there are among them UMMIYUNA (أُمِّيُّونَ) who have no real knowledge of the divine writ, [following] only wishful beliefs and depending on nothing but conjecture.” ( Al Quran # 2:78)
Please read the article in the link below:

A hadith that also proves that Rasulullah could write and read is the hadith of the pen and paper which says that the Prophet asked for pen and paper to write something

The word Ummi appears in the Quran in other places as well. The translation of this word is “gentile.” We know for a fact that he was a gentile and he was conveying stories about the Jews and that which they concealed, this is why it is critical that Allah describes the prophet as Ummi. Regardless, the prophet didn’t have any miracles so it’s impossible to explain how he could’ve written the Quran without knowledge of the future. Allah knows best

He dies not even answer the question. There is no consensus among historians that the Holy prophet did not know how to read and write. The word used in Quran for holy prophet is UMII meant by sunnis the illiterate but there are seven means of this word and ummi does not mean illiterate but it means one who was never taught at a school or university by someone. One who was never institutionalized by someone. The Holy prophet was never taught by anyone. Not a single reference is there that shows that holy prophet went to a school or a teacher it doesn't mean he was illiterate, he had divine knowledge by Allah. Another meaning of word ummi is it is derived from the word UMMAL QURA that was the name of Makka means the mother of all lands. So Allah calls his prophet the citizen of Makka that he has sent a prophet who is from Makka like you as a citizen of this city. In the context of that ayyat in which is Allah is praising his prophet his messenger. How could Allah degrade his own prophet by calling him illiterate?? How could Allah give command of his whole world in the hands of a person who was nauzubillah illiterate?? The holy prophet never showed off his talents of writing and had people to write down the revelations because otherwise the people would object over him that he was taught by that teacher so that the teacher must have taught the Quran to him or he himself has written it down. There are many references in sahi bukhari and other books in which people from other lands n cultures came to Holy prophet n he spoke to them in their own native languages. There are incidents of animals like deer talked to Holy prophet n he talked to them in their own languages. This is so sad that some people without having much knowledge are trying to go for tableegh n dawa n in doing so are spreading false narratives about the Holy prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w.s. and due to such people the true face of islam is tarnished in whole of the world.

And thou (O Muhammad) wast not a reader of any scripture before it, nor didst thou write it with thy right hand, for then might those have doubted, who follow falsehood.
    (Al-`Ankabut 29: 48)
Those who follow the messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write, whom they will find described in the Torah and the Gospel (which are) with them (Al-A`raf 7: 157)

This is such an insane argument for no reason.
I mean, if Muhammad was a prophet, (which he's not) what would it matter if he was literate or not? Jesus never wrote down anything, and the Gospels are all transcribed from the Apostles, save John. You don't often see that brought up, because the doctrine is sound and the manuscript traditions are well established.
Uthman should've burned the Hadiths saying he burned Qurans, too!

Shias are too arrogant, they can follow someone who's illiterate.

Excuse me! He is clarifying a widely held view of majority of muslims that Holy Prophet couldn't read or write which is not true! How are shia arrogant?
