  • Another game and another blank for Rasmus Hojlund. This time in Manchester United's crunch Champions League tie against Bayern Munich. But with Erik Ten Hag's men crashing out of Europe, and the finger of blame starting to point at his misfiring striker, is he really the problem?

    Any striker would struggle in this team , Rashford doesn’t pass, Anthony doesn’t pass Garnacho doesn’t pass, Scott doesn’t pass. Expecting a 20yrs striker to score from 1 shot a game is crazy. Why buy a tall striker if you are not going to cross the ball

      At the end of the day he wasn’t meant to be our main striker but a back up, regardless of this he has lacked service which he needs to score goals. Even Haaland would look below average playing in this team. Haaland can get involved in build at city or he can just be there to finish. But this isn’t city.

    Sacking the manager would be a good idea if we already haven't done it before 4 separate times, since Fergie we haven't a manager for more than 3 seasons so it's obvious there are more issues than 'manager bad' which include the lack of a sporting director as a huge issue. These bad performances are not the problem, they're the symptom of systemic issues within the club but fans seem to think that sacking and re-hiring a another manager will turn United back to where we were 20 years ago with these players which is pure delusion. United need to stick with ten Hag, bring in a sporting director, bring in more players who fit his system and then see how the team performs.

      You are delusional. Why are you so certain that sticking with a manager who is clearly out of his depth will suddenly just sort itself out? There's absolutely no evidence of any progress being made, yet so many gobshite United fans have cooked up this fantasy that 7hag is elite and it'll magically just become brillliant after an arbitrary amount of years. You were saying the same about that useless clown Solskjaer, backing him despite the glaringly obvious fact that he was a terrible appointment.
      Wake up. The reality is each manager has actually been given too much time in the job. Do you not look at other clubs changing manager and progressing and think "hmm maybe that would work at United" Newcastle and Villa were on their way to relegation, they changed manager and with largely the same players made an immediate tactical impact.
      Get it out of your tiny, gullible mind that sticking with this atrociously shite manager is the only way forward for the club.

    I put it to you that even if we had Harry Kane, he would also not have scored a goal in the EPL this season. United simply don't create enough (or any) high quality chances. The wingers can't dribble past fullbacks (except maybe Garnacho) to cross the ball. The Full backs are terrible in attack, Dalot against Bournemouth decided to shoot from an impossible angle instead of finding Hojlund. And our midfield is mediocre at best. We have no threats from anywhere. We can't even score from corners and free-kicks.

    • @abhishektyagi2128
      @abhishektyagi2128 Před 5 měsíci +4

      I disagree. Drop Kane in and our attack improves instantly. Firstly, Rashford might be scoring if Kane is in the team. He improves how we circulate the ball in attack and even though Hojlund's movement is very good, Kane is legendary in his movement. So, Kane would probably be in the top 3 scorers in the league as he was for past 5-6 years. But this is all speculation.

      i'd also suggest Kane would be winning and taking penalties for Utd. I am a Spurs fan, and the fact we have won a grand total of ONE penalty all season shows just how good he was at that side of the game. I know opposition fans hated him for this, but it's just a skill he had (it wasn't diving, it was just using his skill and experience to create the opportunity). If United allowed Hojland to even take penalties, that would help his confidence at the very least. But what United have is a bunch of selfish players that can't seem to operate as a fully functional team. Bruno is very talented. But he spends his time moaning rather than creating. Rashford is quick and direct but he doesn't really help the team create. In fact that stat that showed just how poor the three attacking mid/forwards were in creation was shocking.

    I respectfully disagree with Højlund lacking the ability to function as a link up player. He is very capable of receiving a pass, holding onto the ball, and passing it to either a winger or an AM in the run. Obviously not on the same level as Kane, but he is not terrible at it either. Højlund has disappointed me a little bit with his tally (or lack thereof) in the PL, but I think he is promising and he does get into good positions.

  • @SkullSnax
    @SkullSnax Před 5 měsíci +9

    Was saying this all through last season, the amount of times people said United just need a striker, and I look at that team and think they wouldn’t know what to do with a striker.
    Martial might be a mannequin, but one thing he got really good at, when he can be bothered, is holding up the ball to bring other players into the game. And that was also what Weghorst was doing. United don’t have the creative players needed to service a goal poacher like Hojlund.
    Actually, I tell a lie, they have one, but he’s fallen out with the manager.
    I don’t think changing the manager would change anything because Rashford, Antony, Garnacho, they aren’t going to fundamentally change and become a creative powerhouse overnight.
    But we all knew this. We all knew Hojlund was a huge gamble, and the striker United really wanted and should have gone for was Harry Kane. But Kane is too expensive, okay, so go find another player like Kane, they do exist. There’s Kolo Muani, and Gonçalo Ramos, and Marcus Thuram, and all of those players moved this summer while United were figuring out how to not get their pants pulled down on Mason Mount.
    Maybe there’s another striker they could have found, whatever scouting department found Hojlund surely could have found somebody closer to the player they actually wanted?
    And I don’t think he’s a bad player, I think he’s young and he’s only had time to learn how to do certain things. But you’re asking him to be the final jigsaw piece in a puzzle United have been putting together for 24 months, and he’s the wrong shape. So do you persist with it and keep trying to hammer that piece until it fits or breaks, or do you accept you bought the wrong piece and go find somebody that’s a better fit in January? Because the alternative is that the squad you’ve just spent a lot of money assembling to play a certain way, is all wrong and you need a different group of players to fit this one puzzle piece.
    It’s not like you can’t win games with a more creative, less goal focused striker, United did well last season but also Arsenal have built their squad to do much the same.
    City have the model Hojlund would fit in, because they’ve got creativity everywhere, pre-Haaland their no-striker, all creator system was just an engine for creating high value chances that they’ve now put the most dangerous striker in the world at the pointy end of.
    United sticking with Hojlund isn’t just bad for Hojlund, it’s fundamentally changed Marcus Rashford’s game, and now a guy who scored 30 last season looks like he couldn’t find the net with a map and a compass.

      Hojlund has probably made the jump too quickly to Utd. They've paid twice his value on the hope of his potential - but he's never going to grow in that team. A season in Serie A or Ligue 1 would help him no end. But you can't do that when you have invested pretty much your whole summer transfer budget in one player.

  • @javorgeorgiev6130
    @javorgeorgiev6130 Před 5 měsíci +10

    When they play it long to Højlund the rest do not show up in time at all. The midfield takes forever to get to him, or they intentionally sit back and watch him, waiting for him to win the duel. He's not going to score, because nobody besides McTominay has better finishing than him, yet they're using him to create chances for them. He's being used like he's some younger version of Weghorst. Back to goal, dropping down, holding up, making runs away from goal, playing others in.
    The current chaos is the remains of what was going to be the initial build - a supporting forward up top that plays the young scoring wingers inside the box. Sancho/Rashford/Antony were supposed to score and that sort of happened. I remember Ronaldo visibly cringing at Sancho missing his shots after he plays him in. It's almost comical watching Martial's reactions every time Rashford was heading for the box. The look he gives and his initial position showing up in space to receive for a shot and then realizing Rashford has nothing of the sort in mind as Martial makes a run away from center to drag a defender for Rashford to shoot yet again. He never gave up on pointing and waving as he gets ignored/unnoticed 90% of the time. Bruno/Eriksen had their very short runs as False 9s. Sancho had a pretty decent performance as one once before he decided to get better at playing FIFA at home instead till 4 AM.
    It's a team that is in a rebuild that now needs to rebuild from the rebuild.

    • @sususegar
      @sususegar Před 5 měsíci

      Totally agree on this. Hojlund's hold up play is actually decent, he just got bullied against a more experienced Bayern team. But more often than not in the PL, there are no teammates nearby for him to play to after holding up the ball successfully. You've said it well about Rashford's tunnel vision issues, but it's not limited to the wingers. Dalot was a great example last weekend vs Bournemouth when he chose to shoot from a very tight angle after a good build-up, instead of squaring to Hojlund for a better chance. It's almost as if some of these players have some sort of hero complex.
      As for the false 9 thing, no one in the United squad is fit for this. Just see the exchanges between Kane and Sane in 3:42, none of Eriksen, Bruno or Sancho would make such a run into the six yard area after admiring their pass.

    Yea, Rashford on the wing will only ever look for a dense group of opponents (3-4 is perfect) and then run at them with the ball, kick it into the middle of them ,and run after it hoping they'll just let him through.
    And Antony on the right, can't use his right foot, so he'll cut back in and try to hit one of the supporters midway up in the stands. Garnacho on the left, in fairness, is the best of them, and he'll sometimes try to get crosses in if he's not in the mood to score a goal himself.

    Rasmus Højlund has scored plenty of goals for Manchester United in the Champions League before they crashed out so wrong to say he has not scored goals. He is yet to score his first PL goal but I don't think many should be to be worried about him not being able to translate his CL and Denmark form. The goals will come in the PL and what's scary is he is only 20 years old. The kid is still growing and already his pace and power is unrivalled in the squad. I think a lot will click into place when him and Garnacho develop their partnership more because the Argentinian is going to be key to constant chance creation. As a number 9 Højlund makes all the right runs and has not been spoiled with delivery considering the quality of his teammates. Bruno, Rashford, Garnacho can can all deliver more chances for him and that is going to happen when the chemistry improves.

I can tell you for free Rasmos is good with hold up play may be not very good link up play yet. Manutd simply didn't create or get behind the defence. Part of the problem is the wingers like you rightly said and Mctominay who played higher than Bruno in that game was also incapable of assisting or creating. He preferred to go backwards and sideways he rarely passed forward.

Now Scott is the highest playing mid, and he never has the ball, ETH is just hoping for a hail mary kind of goal from him with no actual plan. Then there's the wingers who can't cross or put the ball in any dangerous areas to save their lives. SO what do you expect from the 19yr old striker short of miracles? They one winger who could at least try to create some chances for other players has been booted because the manager wanted to scapegoat him. Like damn, united really is a dumpsterfire at this point. I have to disagree two points in the video.
    1) I think ETH is intentionally play with 2 8s instead of 2 pivots. While it is true that if either McTominay or Bruno can track back more to help with defence and link up play, it will be a big benefit to the team, I don't think it is McTominay leaving Amrabat alone to cover all the places, but a tactical choice.
    2) Hojlund can handle link-up play, and actually he is quite good of that. However, he was overpowered by Upamecano and Kim, two players that linked up with United, sigh.
    The comparison of Bayern and United are not fair. Bayern has a bunch of long-servicing core players that in the club, even there are some tactical change, but their teamwork and partnership and well established. United doesn't have the same luxury or legacy in the squad.

Sir Alex warned United's senior players because they weren't passing the ball to Robin van Persie when he joined the club. They were threatened with being dropped. His goals won them a league.
    Pass Hojlund the ball and then blame him. He's scored a typical 9's goals in the UCL no real reason why he can't do it in the Premier League. His hold up play is very good, just look at the way he muscles his opponents. Has an eye for a pass too. Selfish pricks at the club are causing the problems that we see. Both on and off the field.

  • @sdemosi
    @sdemosi Před 5 měsíci +3

    Hojlund is simply too young and raw to do what Utd expect him to. They need a player who can drop deep and hold up the ball while bringing other players into the game. They do not need a "pure finisher" as a number 9 because they do not have the link up players to provide chances for that type of player to get on the end of. Hojlund isn't actually that either. He can do link up play but he's panicking. Mostly at Atlanta he ran into channels like he's doing at Utd but he was more confident about what his teammates were going to do. At Utd running into channels means becoming isolated because Utd's attackers are not able to judge when and where they should be moving to improve the odds of a successful attack.
    Utd goals tend to rely on moments of individual brilliance. When Hojlund receives the ball in the channels he may need to beat 1-2 men to score or assist for Utd. The obvious passes and layoffs won't work because the wingers and fullbacks don't seem to anticipate them. He will get little joy from Dalot, Reguillon, Rashford and possibly Antony although he's not as bad as is made out.
    That's why Ten Hag has been playing Martial. He's more in the mould of the player Utd need but unfortunately he doesn't physically compete so he's too easily pushed out of an EPL or UCL game.
    The goals Utd concede often involve simple fast passing movements that find space and get a good angle for a shot. Utd have too many players who don't seem to appreciate the basics of football. I'm not saying they are unintelligent in everyday life but they play a very naive football. That's how they get beaten by Bournemouth and other mediocre sides.
    Hojlund has to improve his overall game and he can do so but it's unlikely to happen as the lone CF for this Utd side. He's under too much pressure. It's not his fault. He's still developing his physique and technique and should not be in this position. I feel sorry for him. I believe he will be a very good CF some day but this is just too soon.
    Utd can improve things by signing an actual CF with good linkup play and a fast CB with good ball skills. That would transform them overnight. They will still need to upgrade more players to be title contenders but they woukd stop losing easier games to weak opposition.
