@Lizzie Allen even criminal who buy gun illegally get background check by the seller, to buy gun illegally you need to gain some form of street cred and people who have that won't be shooting school
then go harder on illegal gun market, treat them the same as drug ring purge the street from illegal gun
why can't we do both kill the illegal gun market and fix every loop hole in legal gun buying that exist to prevent people like the shooter to get gun

@@sparkplug1018 wow, could you be more clueless and dare I say, ignorant? Those "bored" teenagers and teenagers alone organized over 700 marches in American cities and another 100 globally making it the largest single day of protest in the history of our nation's capital. Literally the largest the world has ever seen. Let that sink in a moment. Sure, they did in fact go home, after demonstrating the largest ever organized effort ever produced. Now, that's sures up your carelessness on the matter. Now, let's delve into the ignorant portion of your assessment. "They gave up before anything was done." I mean, REALLY?! Kid, change doesn't happen overnight. They can not protest in the tens of thousands day after day in major metropolitan areas. They can't NOT finish their education because they chose instead to scream in the streets, as that would actually inhibit them from conquering their ultimate goal of bettering themselves for the sake of the future. You want to sit behind your keyboard talking down to kids who went through a horrible tragedy and turned that into a massive demonstration that literally captured the eyes of the world. Change isn't just about legislations and law, it's about perception and influence and knowledge. Because without that, you'll never be able to evolve anything, especially legislation. You think MLK marched once and got his equality? You think those teenagers that lead the organization just dropped the cause because they aren't holding signs in the street? NO! Just because you can't watch their activity on your computer doesn't mean they aren't still working. And you not seeing the relevance of this whole thing at this particular time in history just goes to show your lack of perception. C'mon man, you can do better.

    • @sparkplug1018

@@doc8013 And did the Civil Rights protesters give up before accomplishing their goals? NO! they kept at it until the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. They never gave up, they never relented.
The kids protesting gave up when they got bored with it, pure and simple. Nothing changed, they had no clue what to change, and were content with making some noise. Do you know what you call a movement, protest or campaign with no clear goal or path towards victory? Its called a failure.
And until the day comes when they can unify under a clear and well thought out argument, it will always fail. Interesting side note, if they'd bothered to do any kind of research they'd have realized there already exists a law that could give them pretty much everything they want, with a few simple reclassifications, AND give the pro-gun side what they want. And its been on the books since 1934!
But I'm not supposed to point that out right? We are supposed to just relent and give in without any push back because thats "clueless' and "ignorant" right?

The question should be, given the increased number of school shootings AND the commensurate increase in active shooter drills, what are the odds that these two events would *not* intersect at some point? The probably of a coincidence happening is virtually meaningless; the number you want to look at is the probably over time of a coincidence never happening - in other words the chance that an outcome did not happen by chance.

To be fair, guns are the easy weapon of choice to go for, considering half of all American households have a firearm. And even if they were taken away, the really bad people would resort to home built explosives. Good times with one of those tossed into a packed classroom.
Finally, banning guns just hides the real problem - the cause encouraging all these people to pick up guns and shoot up schools in the first place. High schools being where social cliques begin to form and relationships become a HUGE focus of One's life, the pressure is positively insane if you're the odd man out.
Schools represent many things - young love, friendship, family, a future... to take young lives is to say "FUCK YOU" to everyone they feel is denying them that life in the loudest way possible. It's a sort of the ultimate cry of frustration at being left out of the social game and failing at life, and one that can't be simply ignored by their peers whom can't be arsed to even try to get to know them for XYZ reasons the shooter may perceive to be unchangeable.
Or in other words - If One wants the recognition and respect every human being craves but no one is going to love them, then they'll get people to fear them instead.
This is my working theory anyway. It's not as simple as "just take guns away." It will mitigate future outbursts, but guns are the low hanging fruit. The core issue of violent attacks won't go away without them, and it's something society will probably have to come to terms with itself over, since monsters don't just pop up out of nowhere. It takes a monster to make a monster.

"Here's what I find funny about this debate...most of the arguments boil down to one idea - teenagers are too young, too emotional, too inexperienced to talk about guns. But as soon as they turn 18, they can own as many of those bad boys as they want. And I guess in a way, this is how you know these students are having an effect. You've never seen gun advocates so desperate that they'd start attacking victims of a mass shooting. And that's the power of these teenagers."

Aisha, Banning semi-automatics, whether they are semi-automatic assault rifles, AR-15s (AR does *not* mean "Assault Rifle", by the way), or semi-automatic handguns will not stop violence on its own. Any effort to ban a weapon *must* be coupled with some change to our society as well, such as training teachers, students, and other members of the community to spot these people before they become violent, and how to reach out to them; teaching your kids to be compassionate and not bully their classmates; fighting the stigma associated with mental health; and increasing communication between local, state, and federal levels of law enforcement will also need to happen. Without those other changes (and probably more), I fear a weapons ban just means they'll learn how to build better bombs.

Yes, absolutely, it is the shooters fault. No money, no decent healthcare...no psych drugs to help alleviate the mental health crisis. That, coupled with the extreme saturation of firearms in our society equals ridiculously high levels of gun violence. If a shooter wants to get a gun in America, all he need do is check his neighbors closet....or just buy one legally, because it is freakishly easy here.

It's unfortunate I can't cross Party lines, but I've got a particular Democrat I want to put at the head of the pack for congress, so I'll have to do the Democratic ticket. I'll just cross my fingers and hope the Republicans come to their senses and stop putting complete nutjobs on the top of the ticket. Unfortunately, I doubt that's going to happen.

It's funny to me that some of the people verbally attacking the planning and speaking efforts of these students don't believe students can be articulate about a topic, can come up with rational position statements, or could plan a bus trip or march to speak out. It's as if they think all teenagers are drooling idiots who just want to stare at their mobile devices, play Xbox, and create Snaps. In actuality there are millions of highly motivated, very intelligent teenagers who will work tirelessly to make sure schools stop getting shot up. What we're seeing right now is just the beginning. Over time the crowd sizes may shrink but out of this we are going to see a number of vocal advocates continue to rise and be heard until lawmakers respond.

I know Americans seems they like they live in their own universe and probably don't care about the opinion of foreigners in other countries, but what's going on over there is extremely shameful,
1st there are more mass shootings there in a month than in my country's history
2nd the fact that after a mass shooting no one is allow to talk is ridiculous
3rd the fact that some people defend gun ownership the way they do it's beyond incredible
4th how can anyone try to shame and attack those kids!!!!

The 2nd amendent that allowed guns was made in the late 1700's was used to protect people from the government when the gun could only have shot 1 or 2 bullets a minute. Now the times have changed and the guns have changed, many of Americans think the gun laws should to. But many people hold onto the 2nd amendent saying that violates their rights as Americans. But guns are killing people, killing children and that is more important than a gun

Is that a serious question? They have to be & it has the added bonus of actually reinforcing the entire underlying framework of their bullsh-t. The Republican Party has a political agenda which is to cut taxes on rich people & corporations, eliminate or privatize "entitlements", deregulate businesses, spend a sh-tload on the military, & invade other countries. Now, who the f-ck do you think that type of agenda appeals to? It sure as sh-t isn't regular as- people.
The only constituent group in the country that has a legitimate self-interest in supporting Republicans is like the top 1% of income earners in the country, that's it... literally no one else. Well you can't really win an election with that type of constituency can you? So, for decades they have searched out recesses of the American public with whom they could make some appeals to that would not interfere with their core agenda as outlined above & they found a few groups. 1) Religious extremists 2) Bigots/Racists. They put a 'lot of effort into getting these groups to vote for them & they have to keep going further out there to keep their support because they aren't ever going to half of the sh-t they promise these groups (either explicitly or implicitly,) because the ideas are beyond ridiculous, expensive, & a complete waste of time & energy, if not even unconstitutional. But, all their core agenda items actually f-ck over those other groups just like they do all the rest of us so these people's lives get sh-ttier which makes people more vulnerable to being caught up into one of these categories increasing the support people feel they have thus emboldening them & increasing the fervor for it because these groups don't just see the other side as people with a different opinions, but as actual threats to the country & their enemies.
Combine all that with the fact that most of the money sloshing around in the system is on their side thus allowing them the dominance of am radio (local/regional talk shows,) small/local newspapers, local news channels, & the advertising on all media platforms thus giving them a strong editorial role in the content of everyone else thus diluting the opposing side's ability to put out certain messages. What you end up with is this endless f-cking loop of anger & hatred fueling extreme policies, never getting the policies promised, then getting more extreme in response & the political party stuck exploiting this extremely cynical & damaging to the society strategy because they aren't going to change their agenda & there agenda only appeals to a microscopic portion of the population.

@Lizzie Allen I am not most people and absolutely will elaborate. Comprehensive background checks with no loop holes and red flag laws would be a good start as well as a ban on the sale of assault style weapons and oversized magazines. I am a veteran and know what that type of weaponry can do. They were designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill people as quickly and effectively as possible. They are no good for hunting as the rounds they fire shatter upon impact and the shards bounce around inside the body and shred the meat so it is unusable for eating. Also: it is not polite to be snarky like a two year old simply because someone does not agree with your opinion.

But should YOU ever have your car break down in the middle of the night, it's my thinking that you would really appreciate having a phone with you. @maxchasm5181 Před 4 lety

@Lizzie Allen I absolutely agree with you that people have the right to defend themselves. I don't advocate taking everyone's guns away and never said that. I would however, like to see assault rifles off the street because they ARE weapons of war. In my opinion there should also be stricter laws that would prevent folks with histories of domestic abuse, assault and battery and other acts of violence from having easy access to firearms. That is an area where red flag laws and thorough background checks would prove valuable in reducing the deaths of innocents. Is that too much to ask?
