I believe these types of concepts should be taught before getting a regular license. So they know how to behave around trucks
Amen to what you and theredparallel said. My small pickup truck weighs 4000 pounds. Truckers weigh about 80000 pounds...maybe more. They ALWAYS get my respect, courtesy and distance (between my vehicle and theirs). Stay safe and keep driving.
Truck drivers keep USA going!!!!!
TheBrantfordRailfan Without trucks smarty pants you wouldn't have those panties you're wearing with the skid marks in them , you think a train is gonna drop it's cargo at Wal-Mart or target we truck everything in you own, unless you're planing on hanging out at the train yard to pick your stuff up.
The american public treat truckers like shit, might as well let americans starve then. They dont even use automatics 100% yet or never will.
Bret Frankman LoL and in the end trains still need trucks to deliver the supplies , in the end trucks still do all the work.
In a perfect world where there are no cars in the opposite lane
This is the thing that freaks me out the most. Trying to maneuver around other cars and getting stuck. Especially when lights change/etc.
You're bigger. You just wait until someone yields or gets out of your way.
@@zaappp1588 "your bigger" I wish all problems were solved this way.
@@JordanMichael-ty2ms I use to drive interstate fairly frequently in a big dually with commercial truck tires that made it sit fairly high. I would come up on a line of cars in the fast lane. Of course the ones at the back are just following the leader while the moron in front is pacing a car or semi beside them.
I would flash my lights enough times that I could get most of them out of my way and then pull back a little and punch it.
MOST of the time when these people saw a big truck flying up behind them that didn't look like it had any intentions of slowing down, they magically found their gas pedal. Lol! Seeing the whites of their eyes was a bonus. Hahaha
Just make sure you have good brakes if you use that approach. :D
Btw, out of state drivers from Ohio are without a doubt the absolute #1 worst for hogging the fast lane and blocking traffic and refusing to get over. I could have made millions betting the car at the front was from Ohio.
@@zaappp1588 entitled jackass much? I wouldn’t move an inch for your dumbass. Bully people on the road gets your shit hard lmao? Go get some help with your ego
I love that line, "indicate and dominate"
But it what we often have to do here in Iceland as well
Good video.
At 2:29 you can really see how much room a full size truck truly needs to make a simple turn.
3:06 he made his turn too short he still hits the sidewalk.
Plus his tandems are too far back. I was wondering why I had trouble making those turns and why other truckers was making them just fine. Plus this vidoe is so old that it was made in the 1950's. Just look at the truck. I only found out through ATS. American Truck Simulator.
This is the song I exercise to every morning chewing bazooka joe
Ahh nothing like training videos from the 90's. Crappy music and long overdrawn introductory splashes.
Thanks for the tips. Ill sure use them
I don't drive trucks, I have no idea why I'm watching this but this video is giving me an anxiety attack
I'm presently learning and it's relieving mine, slightly. It helps to remember that my actions may contribute to a stronger human species through facilitating natural selection.
HA...what even more scary is that some of the truck drivers out there are also having an anxiety attack while turning. Scary stuff.
Relax bro you'll pick this up fast, you just never rush about it, i drive trucks.
That all clear crap happens about .01% of the time.
Thanks alot for sharing m8..learnt alot and this video did help me most of the time when i started driving truck..thanks
love old. school videos
Nice views of downtown Pittsburgh.
This is a very informational video for both truck drivers and car drivers too.
North American drivers were never taught how to act around buses and big trucks.
I have accident experience here. My first year. town type streets, 5 lane, turning onto a legal non truck route with 2lanes, parking one side and thank goodness I was the first one to the light that turned 5-700 ft before I got there. My trl was in the right lane and the middle lane and my tractor was in the turn lane. Signals on and working. Light changed, I was passed on the right and struck her car. She was NEVER in my view.
Non-Preventable!! I learned when possible Take ALL the room you are given.
Our courts work like basketball rules here. Whoever has the spot "first" is entitled to it.
for clarity it took that room to put my truck in my lane only like hitting a parking spot
+raisin37 Yup, had the same experience in NYC. It's amazing how so many people (four wheelers) simply are too dense to understand that such a long truck needs room to turn. It's crazy.
New to trucking. So was the accident considered your fault or hers?
And are you saying, you still do the same type of turns ("take ALL the room you are given")?
@@Patthebaker321
Its only his fault if he could have prevented the accident, since truck drivers are considered professional drivers. It sounds like he had no way of doing that.
Not an accident. When driving a semi, you hit a car or a pole and done low damage that is considered an incident. An accident is when you are involved in a fatal crash.
sometimes if you time it right you have to take up 2 lanes to make that turn especially if the curb corner is sharp and you got people standing there..
I wonder why these behemoths are still plugging up city streets. We need a better system for truckers so they can avoid urban and downtown areas to prevent traffic snarls. It has to be nerve racking taking a corner with pedestrians around. We are lucky to have so many folk who make good truck drivers.
@@PaddyO1958 don’t disagree I’ve always thought they should have massive warehouse outside major cities and drop product off there have box trucks and day cabs grab the loads be better on everyone truckers don’t enjoy being im city areas lol
I love that music so much it made me feel like training for a martial arts fight.
Also, if at all possible, try not to have your trailer axles all the way back. Have them toward the front to help lessen the turning radius needed.
Rule of thumb l learned was it takes 3 lanes to make a left turn, it take 4 lanes to make a right, the is the set up, preparation, & visually "seeing" the lanes you need to make the maneuvers.
This would be a nightmare with a combination vehicles, PACIENCE is a must.
awesome video one of the best thank you
Great tips
The issue isn't really the truck drivers it's the dump Impatient 4 wheel, Especially in Southern California!
No, it's mostly the truckers that act like everything is for them. If they have turn on to a street that doesn't have a set back then they're required to wait until they can safely make the turn. Instead they will turn and block all traffic, and want to blame the others for not bowing down. I prepare for turns, I expect there isn't a set back or a turning lane.
Now try this in a longer truck with a sleeper.
hundaraisk is right on the money with tht statement.im always curteous to truckers in my town. i always givem extra room to do their thing
yep good video thanks for the help
BTW my instructor ( in his 70s ) tells me to turn from the far lane but block ( have my wheels just in the inside lane ) it seems to work ok
Super awesome video and music.
most intersections here in Germany (also in other countries like Sweden or Norway) are built in a way that trucks normally can turn without pulling wide when making the tun or completing the turn (of course you have to pull bit wider, but most of the time not that much that you go into other lanes)
@@wakcedout primarily yes, but there are also a few trucks with a long front, both from European brands like Mercedes and Scania but also a few American ones; Semi trucks aren't the longest ones out on our roads; Double articulated buses or buses with a bus trailer are even longer
A turn like that im definitely taking up that second lane
Fr tho ,especially when there’s cars on the road we’re turning into, definitely button hooking it
1:59 if you pull wide as you turn, how do you avoid hitting a car if theres one stopped at the red light ? 3:10 doesnt show any car stopped but thats rare to see no car.
KRS 1 You should look for cars before you turn, if there is a car then follow the green line at 1:56.
KRS 1 Being we are bigger then you 4wheelers we wait for you to move if you're in our way while making are right turn wide.
Good video very informative.
Thanks for you.... It's very good job
edge your truck to the left lane making sure speed bumps (cars) cant get in then if there is a car in the way do not back up. Run over speed bumps if needed.
I live in So Cal. Traffic is a mess, always. Out on the open planes of mid America it is probably a cinch.
Piece of advice: if the vehicle is bigger than you, it has the right-of-way. If I'm driving a semi with a 39' trailer, I'll let the 53-footers in. But, I would expect a dump truck to let me in. Fair? Good. Now, let's all stay safe on the roads
2:22 Lol did he force that car to swerve into the left turn lane.
Tom: Why wud a car know that a right turn signal wud mean the rig would go into the left lane first (there by doing a jug handle turn, which are very dangerous). The "preferred" method, of going wide late, is a button hook and much safer to everyone.
Maybe the car thought the rig's right turn signal meant he was going to turn right, and NOT go left first.
Tom why should a car driver know this? A big rig is a piece of industrial machinery and it's the operators problem. Approach turns at a real slow speed and it's not an issue.
Technically, the truck was in the lane first. The car was responsible for braking and yielding to traffic regardless of the trucks turn signal.
this video shows perfect world but in real life is lot more stressful with traffic all around you boxing you 😅
With the tandems all the way back jeez
Best way is to take up both lanes to take any tight turn
@raylouis-Thanks for you input!
very nice !
happened to me. I kept the trailer tight to the curb while turning. but checking the fish eye mirror I see a small car has squeezed between the tandems and the curb. I stopped before running over the car. she needed to back up and surprised me when she jumped the curb then drove down the sidewalk until clear of my truck then dropped onto the street.
Here in england the roads are smaller, so i block all lanes, indicate and dominate.
Lol he straight up cut that dude off 😂
People on the road today drive like it's their goal to get crushed by a semi
Taking this information with me to American Truck Simulator
Cool videos
All up on the curb lol
Gud video
OK. Now what if your right turn light is green and the oncoming traffic has red and cant go anywhere if you are turning in the lane without going over into the left due to cars waiting there too?
In Georgia, if you cross the line before you make a right turn, you get a hefty ticket. Auto-fail on a CDL test. Always buttonhook.
It starts off like a Steve Brule episode
if u are stopped at a redlight or stop sign and want to turn right if a car is in the left turn so u cant complete your turn do u wait until nobody is in the lane or turn and make them back up?
well that explains it thanks testing monday
Was that the 'Knight Rider music?'😉
Whoever driving that truck must be a genius to slide the tandem all the way back to driving in downtown.
In Australia, we take up both lanes to "discourage" the use of either, and turn from the second lane. What that driver did was force the car out of the way. If we did that and the car didn't move and we connected, the truck driver would be at fault.
If you’re driving in a city move your tandems all the way forward!
I watch this for my video game Euro Truck Simulator 2018. So I can't turn right the truck normally thank you
Very good
What happens if there is cars on the lane next to you and the lane you are turning into????
If you make a right tight turn, its the safest option to use both or more than 1 lane to make the turn. This way other vehicles cant pass you on your left side ;)
These directions are for articulated buses too.
Hello Here in West Aus the truck licenses are Heavy Rigid (HR) then a semi trailer is a Heavy Combination -(HC). The biggest trucks - Roadtrains have multiple trailers 2 or 3 and they are driven on a Multiple combination (MC) licenses I passed my HC how did you go ?
if you edge left to make a right turn you fail your road test.
jasonhpi that's correct. it's not a preferred turn. DOT doesn't want you making button hooks if possible. I only make them if it is absolutely necessary.
In Texas, u wud fail the road test doing a wide early turn, called a jug handle.
Turning wide late in TX is legal, called a button hook. This is shown in the Texas CDL book.
right turn lane...how about a dual right turn lane into a 3 lane road, can you then use the outside lane and creep left into lane 3, and end up in the middle lane? seems smarter than cutting of the left right turners.... i have searched everywhere and cant find this answer...
He's entirely too jolly for such a deadly serious road-ragey contention. lol.
Aye Pitt Ohio that’s my current company this had to be years aho
What we know ad the Button Hook
I've pulled 57' trailers before. As if 53' is not long enough. I see both sides of this. Shipper wants to ship more by having longer trailers, but roads are not built for this. So there's no easy solution to this.
If you go wide on a right turn and the car hits you in the inside it is legally the other drivers fault. At least that's how its been for us in CA. Last driver crushed a car trying to pass on the right they were at fault.
2:21 are we just gonna ignore him pushing the car out
What happen if the car cant back up cause it has another car behind?
This is after making sure your tandem axle is not all the way back.
Whats funny is that they teaching how to turn while in the video you can see trailers getting on curb everytime
My cdl book says the left lane to turn right maneuver is forbidden
I'm here because a semi truck cut me off.....he was on the right lane ahead of me but the light turned red. His turn signal was on to turn right but while the light was red he moved to the left lane only half way in to the left side and half way in the right side of the lane. Once the light turned green, he completely moved to the left lane next to me. So I went straight since it was green. His turn signal was still on for the right turn so I thought how weird. He then started making the right turn from the left lane while I was driving straight. He never looked both ways or even slowed down. He cut me off so I honked at him and he looked back at me flipping me off. He then completed the turn but I've never seen a truck driver do this before
The 53' was meant for highway use only.
2:12 Proceeds to cut off four wheeler when making a right hand turn👍
The most cases of crashes from making right hand turns is one people not paying attention to the bigger vehicle turning. People not turning properly.
Anyone knows which city it is ??
Tandems to the rear. Why not slide them forward ?
There a significant lag in the reaction of the rear tandems to the steering axle which can be measured in feet. Using a forty foot trailer's which is or was the norm when I first started driveing. It's 8 feet. Obiviously with today's longer tractor's and trailer's, the footage has increased.
If and when one develops a technique referred to as doing a "Button Hook". Regardless of which direction they turn. If and when done correctly. One can if and when traffic warrent's it. Make any corner, without issue's. A driver really only need's to pay attention to steer axle and the last axle on the trailer or set of trailer's they are pulling.
It's ironic how a OTR long hauler, will after spending a couple of week's or longer. Utilize the technique which is quite noticeable to any and all other's. When they park the truck, get into their auto and drive home. Will instintively continure to do though considerably shorter; Button Hooks.
@0:11 welp, guess we're all goin' to jail now...lovely, just frickin' lovely!
Downtown Milwaukee WI:)
Pittsburgh my man. I haven't been to Milwaukee, but I've been in Pittsburgh thousands of times.
First thing I noticed is the tandem at slid to the rear, Why? Looks like super trucker is in the city.🤔🐴💥
Just curious, what's an HC license? Commercial here is class A, used to be Class 1, not sure when it changed. I'm going for my CDL in a month or so. Should be interesting. Good luck to you!
Heavy Combination. Equivalent to a class A CDL, it covers heavy articulating vehicles like tractor-trailers.
😂 They use a single day cab which considerably changes the geometry of the turn for over the road trucks. The proper and safest way to make a right turn successfully is to start straddling both lanes at least 300 ft before the intersection with your right signal on. You may have to slow down and time that break in traffic in the lane next to you but it's worth it. You are protecting both lanes, with the exception of motorcycles, from passing on either side. Then as you make the turn you can swing left a little more if you need it to not hit the curb. To turn the way the video shows, you should avoid unless forced to. The reason being, you should only block lanes on the road you are on because as you can see the driver has to cross well beyond the stop lines of all lanes on the road he's turning on. If traffic was stopped there, he wouldn't be able to turn. If traffic pulled up as he started off to turn, now he'd be stuck there blocking the intersection until the cars backed up. In moderate to heavy traffic this would be a serious problem because most people coming up to a light aren't concerned about the traffic on the other road. And they look up all surprised, wondering why you have to be coming way over there. You might still have to cross over a corner of the left lane of the road you're turning on but there's a huge difference. To pull straight almost across the intersection, looks to people pulling up in the opposing traffic you're going to turns towards, like you aren't going to turn at all, even tho your signal is on. But button hooking, which is the turn where you swing left and loop right, gives them no doubt. Nothing is foolproof. But I find most ppl willing to stay way back as I complete the my turns, I flash the headlights and smile and they wave smiling back. I honestly think it's because the truck manuver is warning them sooner than the one on the video. Not every intersection is tight, so I only take how much road I need to get it done.
The Stewie Channel um. ok I've been driving otr in the northeast for over two years and I make my turns just like in this video just fine. never had any huge issues. also I've never in my life seen a truck manurver how you're descibing. do not ever give this advice again please. the video is showing the legal way to drive.
Lauren Kind 😂 26 years and counting, but since you don't know what a buttonhook turn is, I'm the one giving bad advice ?
I seriously doubt your "expertise" and if you've been driving the northeast with a sleeper truck, then you've already made buttonhooks and don't even realize it.. Have you never in 2 years made a right or left onto a street with a median ? Are you also maybe the impossibly lucky driver that never has traffic that DICTATES a different approach you may be forced to make at every intersection..
You are a know it all after 2 years 😂 That's an accident waiting to happen you know..
You really should learn what you're doing before you try and tell others they give faulty advice.
Btw, every turn you make that your vehicle is outside the lane you are turning in is illegal ! A buttonhook turn is no more illegal than a 90° turn. Both are illegal. Either turn will get you in trouble if you cause an accident.
Never said i havent made buttonhooks. just saying You're giving bad advice because you said to not do as the video is telling you to. I take back what I said originally about not seeing it. I have and those drivers make the widest unnecessary turns. Of course do what you have to especially in NYC and other tight cities. But DOT wants you to make turns as showed in the video. That is what is taught in school. Seems as if you learn the "old skool" way. Nothing wrong with it. Whatever works for you. I know exactly what a buttonhook is. And its not stratling both lanes. its swinging a little left when your ready to turn and when theres no left lane traffic and keeping your trailer from being able to let anyone including motorcyles to sneak by on your right . That's the proper way and that's how I do them. Trucking isn't rocket science I acquired alot of knowledge and skill fairly quickly within 2 years. No accidents. clean inspection. No citations other than a "over height " lol which I fought in court and was ruled as "faulty equipment".
I don't like when someone gives advice against a safety video because if some took your advice they end up have a a motorcycle in the right side of their trailer. Btw, out of which type of turn will get you in the most trouble if an accident occured. Pretty sure it would be your way of turning since it's not recommended by a dot safely video but you give your advice and I hope nobody takes it unless they want to clip somebody and say this is what this guy on the Internet said to do lol
Lauren Kind actually I state in my instruction to stay as close to the curb as possible.. And straddling lanes is part and parcel of a buttonhook turn.. You don't just lunge out at the last second like yelling , SURPRISE !
Regardless, traffic that you are turning against and intersection dimensions (no matter what method you use) will dictate just how close you'll be able to keep those trailer tires to the curb.. Any driver that makes any turn must be looking at all times, at where traffic is in relation to every part of their truck.. The DOT wants you to use common sense period, they're preferred way can be just as dangerous in inept hands.. The video is not correct for every or even most, situations in cities with small intersections.. In my experience I have never gotten a ticket, warning or stern look from any officer watching me turn.. Philly, Pa. has police on almost every corner it seems and getting around the older parts of town is tight.. It would defy the laws of physics to try the preferred method, at many intersections..
You mention what they taught in school.. Do you know the number one thing they aren't teaching ? To follow your path using the trailer tandems while backing up.. Something so simple they are not teaching.. Every time I've been hit in a lot and in dock doors by drivers backing up, it's because they were taught to use the rear of the trailer to guide them.. I stopped counting the times I've been hit after the 10th time.. I feel bad for them.. No one wants to make that call to their company.. And I've helped them by coaching them on where to look and why.. It's almost like instant skill, once they know how.. The one thing I've learned in my years of driving is that every day is different, even on roads most traveled.. And 2 things dictate various maneuvers I make behind the wheel.. The weather and traffic..and it's always changing..
BTW I'm not a guy.. And fault is determined by the investigating officer and the courts.. I've never had an at fault accident.. And did have a woman in a jag, half jump a city curb to try and squeeze by me.. Guess who was sitting at the light on the road I was turning onto ?
When I saw her start to try and come up to my tires, I just stopped.. It's not like I was doing more than 10 mph.. The policeman looked at me because I stopped, I threw up my hands and then pointed towards my passenger window.. He turned on his lights and blocked the other side of the intersection.. Went back to her and gave her hell, made her back up and wrote her a ticket.. And yes I was making a buttonhook turn, SHE didn't have patience to wait and decided a little curb on 2 wheels was ok.. But she still hit me.. And my turning maneuver was not in question at all..
+The Stewie Channel I have had bicycles pass me on the right when I was making a right turn.
That is a horrifying experience when I think what could have happened.
My recommendation is watch for people on bicycles when you are making a right turn.
2:30 the truck drives pass the double yellow lines, isn’t that a bad thing? If a car were driving while the truck was making that turn would the truck be at fault or the driver
anyone else notice the j-walker in the beginning?
@1BEAVIS13 i also do that..
hello truck simmers and future CDL holders alike
Thanks for this video I'm thinking of going into trucking ,since there are little jobs here in Nebraska , ill I see is jobs in the paper for trucking so that's what I'm going for ...
Pittsburgh
DOT
needs to start putting "Do not overtake turning vehicle" signs on every trailers
On every large vehicle
Won't do a thing.
Better would be a flap on the right rear corner of the trailer like the stop sign of a school bus. The flap moving out would catch almost everyone's attention.
