The first two appraisers need to be named. Anyone that has had their property appraised by either of those two need to have their properties reappraised.
There are all kinds of things wrong with the system. I took note that she bought the house three years earlier for $100,000. So, the $115,000 and $125,000 estimates were giving an apparently "very reasonable" 5% to 8% bump per year. HOWEVER, it sounds like the price of that house was massively suppressed when she bought it for $100K, if it legitimately appraised for $259,000. This is why predatory real estate investors love 'impoverished' neighborhoods. They can scoop up rock bottom prices and then rent at rates covering twice as much. They are persistent and intentionally ensure any poor person is unable to purchase a home, so they can be bled for LIFE for massively inflated rents. So many ways this is wrong. ... But this lady should sell her house for $259K YESTERDAY, and pocket $160,000 in cash. And THEN buy a cheap property in cash, and be done with the banks.
Black people are still playing nice with these people. It's almost deserved if you're not going to name them.
At 3:50 and 3:58 the names were spoken by the narrator and shown on-screen.
Edit: You may have meant the individuals from those agencies.
Actually the 3rd appraiser needs to be named. They over valued the house in order for the home owner to commit fraud. Their name is conveniently blacked out in the complaint.
Key facts that are missing from this biased video:
1. She bought the house for 100k, 3 years ago.
2. The first 2 appraisals were from mortgage brokers. The 3rd was from a private appraiser.
3. Houses in the same street are valued at 110k - 145k range. In line with the value the first 2 appraisals have given the house.
I know you will ignore this, it doesn't fit the racism narrative but, unfortunately, not everything is as it seems, especially when so much information is conveniently left out. This is what a former president would call "fake news".
@@dudebro3250 Actually that fits the racism narrative even more. It means that white people consistently have their homes overvalued and no one is doing anything about the fraud. Additionally, since homes are the greatest source of wealth for majority of Americans, it means white America has an overinflated wealth.
When she said "I'm devaluing my home" that hit me like a punch in the gut. I have lived in my first home for 5 years and all you do is worry about maintaining and increasing its value. To think that one's existence is damaging that value... What a f****** disgrace. I'm so sorry this happened, it's a crime. It's a violation of our civil society

It was the same home when her friends husband met the appraiser and got it doubled in price; and he just happened to be white. That white privilege shows its face once again...
@@shos698 I don't think it's so much white privilege as it is systemic racism. This white privilege narrative only furthers that same systemic racism because now we have bs critical race theory teaching that kids of minority races are incapable of achieving the same as white kids and need to be coddled while white kids are forced to apologize or be treated as an enemy for what not they, but their ancestors did. It's only furthering the divide. We need to end racism, not flip it from blacks to whites or any other race.

They shouldn't ask you that on any type of application but this America where any and everything is accepted and excused.
YES! Let's start there.
It’s for government reporting. If there are accusations of the bank of discrimination, the government can go back and investigate how the bank lended based on race. No it's not a myth. Because yes blacks now have the right to own properties and asset's, and now their family can inherit or vice versa but it didn't always use to be this way.
@Rufus Lloyd No I said now, as in 2021. And I never said blacks where just granted that right.

Since the generational wealth "myth" did indeed actually occur, even if it was 200 years ago, then I'm correct in saying it isn't a myth. Based off of your responses, I suggest you heed your own advice.
@Rufus Lloyd How many of my family properties are still in my family??
Good question! And I'm glad you asked instead of making uneducated assumptions. And before I answer your question I want to add that, I never came from money on either side of my families so I technically am not a good example like a person who has wealth to actually inherit and pass down and yet I still have a family property in my family that was passed down. 1 property left to my mom and her siblings left to them by my grandmother.
@Rufus Lloyd that’s bold of you to assume she wouldn’t invest some of it.. not everyone blows through money some people are financially responsible.
this has been going on forever. glad she kept fighting.
You are so cute sir
You are right. I worked in banking in 1991. My sister wanted to get a second mortgage on her home. She came to my bank, and the appraiser came into her home, made some off the cuff remark about how her house looked great. Appraisal came in low and I talked to my boss. She didn't want to believe it. We sent out an appraiser again, just like this lady, we used a White friend, and guess what? Appraisal was significantly higher.

There is probably lots of generational wealth that's lost due to this practice.
There is and has been and it will continue. A lot of people don't get that. They'd rather blame a group of people than look at the history and the direct line from back then to how things are now.

That's an incredible good point.. Another reason why the wealth gap grows
Not probably. There’s actually at least one study on that.
Probably 🤔🤔 thats the goal.
My white contemporaries feel that their home values are devalued because of their black neighbors. Perhaps they should face up to what the real problem is. Segregation driven by cultural racism is costly to all parties.

Yea, I didn’t know how this could affect everyone but I think that I would conceal my race for the good of myself and my neighbors. This life is crazy. I feel like I always have to play a twisted game of chess to get ahead.
That’s a great explanation to the issue. On the other hand, there are individuals in both black and white society that would choose to be separate. Those individuals on both sides use fear as their excuse, in my opinion. Fear is the great divider.

We all know data can be racist because data is entered by humans. So, yeah, they may claim a robot or algorithm spit out a value but I bet their data set is attached to race and gender. Stupid companies. What the white woman explained about historic data is precisely why we cannot rely on data as absolute truth. Data is not objective. Data is subjective and has the implications of historic racial bias.
She admitted to doing MANY things differently for the third appraisal and cherry picked race as the thing that made the difference. Is there racism in home appraisals? Maybe. Experiments like this don’t show that there is.
@anonymous she removed her black art, did not put her race and gender on the app, and asked a white man to be there during the appraisal, all things related to race.

@@1EQUALS-INFINITY What does that have to do with the fair value of a person home. The value is the value regardless of who lives there or is buying there as it is in any neighborhood.
@@1EQUALS-INFINITY That is only after the property is appraised. Once the appraisal is made realtors run comps for the area sales of comparable homes and sets the price accordingly. The buyers financial institution then comes out to inspect the property and decides if the appraised value to price is okay to write a mortgage. On the other hand if a homeowner simply wants to borrow money on equity, accuracy in an appraisal is paramount and the only fact should be the fair appraisal value of the home. If a home is assessed by county at $500,000, but due to improvements and sales of comparable homes in an area actually value is $700,000, if an appraiser comes in and gives an unfair appraisal of $525,000, the loss of $175,000 for the owner. Not because the house is worth less or because someone wouldn’t pay the asking price, but because it was unfairly appraised.

100% I’ve doing the same thing since I was in my early 20’s. There’s no reason to ask what race you are in a loan application or anything having to do with finance. This is sad and criminal and the government needs to step in. How many families have up or took the first appraisal and were cheated out of money!! The same thing is going on in every gentrified neighborhood in the country. The same property that black and brown people lived in is now worth triple what they sold it for. Why, because whites people moved in!!

@The Logic Party okay, I'll agree that a well-designed study may be useful, but the standard scientific method is not easily applied to all real life issues (for example, it's hard to find or assign a naturally occurring true control group). I'm also a bit wary because some "studies" are flawed in design, process, or methodology, leading to results that can be flawed, skewed, or misinterpreted (intentionally or unintentionally). Study results can be used to tell a story that fits the narrative or an agenda a party is trying push. Studies can be helpful, but without information about methodology and process, it will just end up being a sound bite for the news, which is a way to easily manipulate public opinion.

So many factors go into whether you can or can't buy a house, whether you want the house your looking at or not. So turning to the race of the home owner as a reason for not selling is ridiculous. You get a lot of offers on houses not all go through. I just dont think regular average people looking for a house turn it down because of the race of the last owner. The house had the last owners stuff in it. Probably wasn't redone repainted or anything done to make it sell ready. Then they cleaned it up except the white people photo then it sold. Maybe it wasn't the white people picture maybe it was the fact that nothing else was in the house and it probably got cleaned and maybe some work done to it after the previous owner got the stuff out. Racists see racism everywhere. Normal people dont.

Furthermore you are actually pretty evil if you see systematic racism and you aren’t doing anything, systematic racism is illegal, you need to call one of the many government institutions dedicated to eradicating racism in any institutions or companies whatever you want to call them, you should call and report racism if you see it instead of doing nothing,

This is shocking! This poor woman must have been devastated. Realising just how the colour of her skin could determine how the value of her property was appraised. It has to feel like society is telling you that it is you that is worth less, a lot less. Dreadful! Truly dreadful.
This story has some startling facets. First, what homeowner would think that their home, purchased for $100,000, would be worth about $180,000 three years later,. That's not reflective of the real market value increase in homes during that period in this economy. The first appraisal was probably right on. - - The final value after concealing her race is surprising. What changed in the marketplace? Why would the value have grown so huge, for a home purchased for $100,000 only three years earlier. What marketplace factors supported that incredible appraisal? - Gotta wonder how that appraiser arrived at that value for a home purchased three years earlier for $100,000. - - Were their major restorations and remodeling done to the home to justify that? If so, they are not mentioned in this story.
Yea, this story should have shown the appraisals, I would like to see the comparables used to arrive at the value and what method the appraiser used before i call out racism.
Do the appraisers work for the banks she was trying to obtain sa second mortgage from? If so, their appraisals could have reflected what the banks felt comfortable lending to her, rather than being scientific estimates of the home's market value. And if so, I could believe they discounted her creditworthiness as long as they thought she was black.
But if the appraisers were paid to give straight-up estimates of what the house was worth, then (1) it made no sense to discount the house even if they didn't like blacks, and (2) it doesn't make sense that one appraisal was such an extreme outlier as appraisers work from set methods that leave little leeway for personal creativity.
Yes, and in the housing complaint, the name of the outlier (3rd appraiser) is blacked out. Not mentioned in the news report either. You would think they would welcome the positive publicity if theirs was the objective, non-discriminatory appraisal report that saved the day. A little sketchy if you ask me.

Had the same problem in Baltimore with our single family home. Went to another lender and left a lockbox for the appraiser so we were not home. The house came back at $280K. This is not new at all unfortunately.

@@serif392You said "If the house is devalued then all the white homes get devalued because they're in close proximity." That statement you made is completely wrong. The whole point of this video is that the black women disclosed her race as African American, as a result, they appraised the house below the actual value.
