- Hey everyone!
I found a very effective and cheap way to add an electric guitar pickup to an acoustic including grounding the strings so there is no hum or buzz. I was very surprised at the tone of the guitar !!! Check it out it went rather well I feel!
This is very popular in Bachata Guitars

Back in 1973, I was around 13 years old. I had a cheap dimestore acoustic, a 1959 Wollensak monaural reel to reel tape recorder (which had a 12AX7 tube preamp and, a "PA" public address function mode switch), and a 1959 Sears Silvertone "HI-FI" cabinet with a 12" speaker. I stuck the microphone from the Wollensak into the sound hole of my cheap acoustic, set it on "PA mode", ran a cable to the 12" Sivertone "HI-FI" speaker and, viola!, I had my first electric guitar.
You wont believe this ,but i have a stack system and i was thinking,if i was to play my acoustic with,i have a cheap microphone, but put it inside the sound hole and play it,would it be viola,i just cut all the wireing out,the mic into the sound system ,well its a cd x3 player and turntable but mic in to that then in sound hole, jobs a good un😂😂😂
Would have loved to see a test with the batchata style! This is how the famous band, Aventura gets their tone.
not just aventura pretty much every bachata guitar player. Luis Vargas and Antony Santos made it famous in the early 90s
Hey I figured out a cheap easy way to put a humbucker in an acoustic guitar! has anyone done this before or do you know another way ? if you have or do please share! :) Thanks Peeps!
Intriguing way of mounting the pickup. Great job and it sounds nice, glad I’m not the only one that’s done this
Good man@
Thank you very much for posting this video.. I've done it with a single coil, but now I'm stepping it up to a P-90 😎 I never thought of using the sound hole mute/cover that you used!! Excellent idea, thanks again 🤘😁
a p90 or one of those gold foil humbuckers is what I am going after
Love it! you work like I do! Do cool things as cheap as possible with old parts! Great job!
Thank you so much! I almost gave up trying to connect the humbucker pickups to the wiring of the piezo of my dad's old acoustic electric guitar--which didn't work. Your wiring method worked perfectly!
Thanks
I just want to say that you are a saint for explaining how to do all this!
WOAH! You my friend are not only a talented musician, you are a talented intellectual. I'm actually building my cousin a requinto style 12 string. This setup requires some modification.
It uses 2 standard sets of 6 strings and required the bridge reinforced. It also uses low action. I can hear the buzz already. I was looking at humbuckers, but this is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thank you so much man
I remember cover bands back in my middle school days mounting gibson humbuckers in acoustic guitars. They'd run it into a Fender Twin Reverb and they got a great sound. Especially for the band Chicago's songs with acoustic guitar parts. They didn't even use proper PA systems either. The only instruments they'd mike were the vocals, drums and maybe the horns. Everything else was their big amplifiers volumes right off the stage. No monitors either. They were great. Played and sang everything note for note perfect.
It sounds pretty good with that humbucker with the electronics that are on board. I always wondered what it would sound like running through the standard Electronics in humbuckers normally run-through. Also possibly blending both of them together. I know a guy who took a regular soundhole pickup and mounted in the way to where the two bass we're under the pickup and he ran that soundhole pickup direct to an octave pedal and dropped it down an octive or two to so it sounded like he was playing bass on the two bass strings
I have a piezo inside my bridge and a p90 in bridge position with a Seymour Duncan Kurt Cobain single coil angled between the bridge and the middle position and 2 Kurt Cobain single coils pickups coiled together to simulate a humbucker in neck position so I have the guitar fitted with 3 volume knobs 2 on the body and one on top with the piezo controls and 2 tone selection switches which each have have 2positions and the other has 3 switch positions
Wow !! This is amazing, I have an old humbucker I might try this !
Great video! The only note is that in some preamps close the battery circuit trough the jack contacts and doing this would short the battery trough the pick up
Thanks for this idea , it’s amazing and cheap to do.
Brilliant idea using the strat baseplate for ground 👍🏻
Comment 101,😂yess great success, but had to laugh when you wired it all in and then played and said"yess i like the sound ,it sound like an acoustic😂but when plugged in,thats when the magic happened,i play acoustic but the sound of my acoustic ive only beenn playing 2yrs and im 48 so 46 mid life crisis😂but i got a second hand acoustic and i knew absolutley nothing about guitars,i taught they had 5 strings,id never held a guitar before i baught the 1 i learned to play on,an that wasnt evn 2yr ago,so i learned a few chords and jeez the action on my huge jumbo was way too high for anybody, but i taught being a novice, knowing nothing ,i taught when my fingers were in bits "ah im a beginner"but i learned a few chords and a few songs, oasis, noel always used a capo on the 2nd fret so i was learning wonderwall,,haha, but the capo lowerd the strings and i liked the jam and their songs used the g chord and then (sorry 4 goin on)5 months ago,a fella seen me play on social media and he was playin yrs i just hadnt seen him in yrs but he gave me a super guitar, the 1 i play know, couldnt believe how easy it was to play the action was perfect,i put new stings in,aw taught i was mark knophler, anyway great video, liked ,subsribed,il be watchin ur vids👍👍
You installed a metal plate for ground on bridge under surface. Did you removed all together the bridge wire or left it in place? From where to where does the ground wire go to? I like to know as I’m a little lost. You made it look easy and simple, but a little confuse, as I like to convert my acoustic Yamaha guitar that have already the equilizer built in.
I use a slightly more complicated plywood clamp design, single coil and strong neodynium magnets to replace the polepieces. Also allows me to move the pickup around a bit if I want. And installed a volume/tone hybrid pot.
Mind telling us how you did this. Thanks!
Great chops man!
Dude, that was awesome.
Great idea and playing to match...
Many thanks for filming and sharing M8ty. ..... will be watching this before tonight's Wednesday Q&A Session. ...... M&MX / Mark T X
Great Playing / video!!! Inspired me to build this in my Yamaha FG 420. Soundhole cover = D'Addario Screeching Halt Acoustic Guitar Feedback Eliminator (5.49 / Sweetwater) + Trem Plate 10.00 (Reverb). Thinking of having a SC Strat Pickup on the bottom of the sound hole with a Seymour Duncan SA1 self fitting in the middle. Will add a toggle switch - On/On - for either or.
Hi Brent !
Are you using acoustic or electric guitar strings because electric guitar pickups don't tend to pickup acoustic strings well.
That grounding plate might just give you better acoustic transfer from the strings to the guitar top than using slotted plastic bridge pins.
Oh I never thought if that how cool
SOUNDS OK VERY CLEAR
Sounds great I am Going to try it
My man is “practiced!!” 😂🎉
I want to be able to switch from that humbucker to the piezo. Can you show me how to wire in a switch?
Did you done out how to wire it? I'm trying to do the same thing. I have an acoustic-electric with under saddle piezo pickup and want to incorporate a humbucker in the sound hole. I got the bung ready. I guess I'll need a switch to wire both pickups.
Dam man, I wish I would have seen this video 4 years before I attempted to put a humbucker on my acoustic.
What are you playing at the beginning
i forgot the name of the tune, it sounds so familiar. is it from srv's? the into demo you played?
Is the preamp necessary or can one just wire straight from pickup to jack, and perhaps a volume pot?
Much better to use EMG active pickup to do this. I have done it. No earth hum and no unwanted noises. No need to earth the strings with EMG pickups. Also, electric pickups does not sound good with normal acoustic strings as they are non-magnetic. The wound strings sounds dull. Use GHS White Bronze or DR Zebra strings. They are magnetic acoustic strings. A little less nice acoustic sound, but electric sound is top notch with these strings on a mod like in this video!
thats great thank you :)
Hey I'm interested in trying the EMG active pickup on my acoustic/electric. How did you go about doing it? I basically want to leave the regular under saddle pickup for acoustic and then switch to the EMG active for solos etc.
Hi sir. I love your video it helped me a lot understand the grounding of your guitar to eliminate the hum. Just wanna ask where did you connect the shielded wire from the metal piece you put underneath the bridge? In which part of the socket sir? Or just anywhere in the socket ? Thank you for your favorable response. 😊
to the ground pin on the jack socket if I remember correctly
@@BrentHutchinson I got so from socket will do make a connection to anywhere that attached to the strings? I appreciate your response dear bro. ❤️ Sub to your channel as well!
@@manafromheaven28 yeah as long as the ball end if the string is touching the metal plate you will create an earth
Was this just an experiment Brent or was there something wrong with the HB soubdhole pick up? I thought that one sounded really great and for 20 quid....a real bargain 😁
Yeah just an experiment :)
gain sounds ok compared to a passive sound hole pickup on the market
Fascinating stuff. ..... Maria says..... Tell Him...... He does love his jack !!!!! Ooooeeerrrrrr Mrs ! ! ! ..... How DO you get to know all this stuff !!!????!!!! ...... M&MX / Mark T X
Can I wire the humbucker to the pre amp instead of the piezo?
isn't a humbucker pickup supposed to stop hum ???
First time I saw an electric guitar pickup in an acoustic (as opposed to a dedicated acoustic guitar soundhole magnet pickup) was back in the early '80s with The Alarm. I'm sure it had been done before then, but that was the first time for me. See them in mimed action on TOTP here. czcams.com/video/KZp11vks_Ws/video.html
So awesome!!!!
hello im tried doing this on my guitar but of-course i had ground noise. so can yall suggest me an alternative to the metal bridge he used so i can ground the jack
Yes I’ve done the same thing - it’s just not loud enough
I did it without the onboard unit though
awesome !
gostei muito da dica. vou testar no meu violão.
you could probably just snip the pins short enough so you can plug the holes up for aesthetic reasons haha!
You must put electric guitar strings set rather then acoustic guitar strings,I believe its sounds much batter with the pickup you installed, not offensive just advise.
Love and peace from Karachi pakistan ❤❤❤❤❤
Nice job sir... phospor bronze or bronze strings?
Bronze strings
Where can I get one of those rubbers to cover the hole
Thank you for the video as I've already realized, purely through having the great benefit of your knowledge, some progress towards completion of my own project in a similar fashion. I do have one question which pertains to the matter of the EQ/control unit, specifically whether or not my project will require such hardware.
Might it be possible that in lieu of installing an EQ which I do not currently possess, I could simply wire in a volume potentiometer and achieve basic success?
yes you certainly could do that. Just like an electric guitar
@@BrentHutchinson thank you, sir.
Thank you:) Do you recommend a specific humbucker-that works well with acoustic guitar and (excessive amounts of) gain? Also, have you tried mounting the humbucker on wood on top off the guitar? For fun, I’d like to switch b/w folk/classical fingerstyle and Black Sabbath’y sludge metal-on my acoustic. On first try, Gain seems not sound that great on an acoustic. Perhaps, you have experimented with it?
No for this I just used a cheap humbucker. Your ideas are interesting though.. maybe will investigate... cheers matey
Not a lot of space under the string!
Hello, great video. This is exactly what I was trying to do to play bachata. Do you offer installation services? If you do, pls let me know.
I could but depends where you are
@@BrentHutchinson I live in Bath, I can come to Brighton (so beautiful) for a weekend. I'll write you a private msg on Facebook
It sound pretty good,do you still use 9V battery on your EQ?
good job👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Are those acoustic or electric strings
How's it take distortion pedals or amp gain? Haven't finished video tho lol
Surprisingly well
How about replacing plastic pins with power pins.... which you can then ground them.
Great idea
Hi there, I'm trying the same project here. Do you use standard acoustic guitar strings or changed it to electric guitar strings?
I used acoustic strings but electric strings could sound killer
@@BrentHutchinson That's what Dominican Guitarists use they use Electric Strings. :-) Nylon strings are old school for Bachata.
Nice idea but the EQ must other loud ( sorry i find the word not ) bevor you make the settings it was better i think. LG Detlev
Genial !!! 🌟✨🙌🏼
Neck or bridge humbucker?
Does tapping become easier when there is a pick up? I was thinking of buying an acoustic electric guitar.
Yes it does for sure
better use humb pickup bridge or neck bruh?
Hi, I'm looking for someone in New York to install a Gibson Classic 57 pickup on a bachata guitar. If you know someone, would appreciate help.
Hola, estoy buscando a un tecnico de guitarras en New York para que me instale un Gibson Classic 57 pickup a una guitarra (para bachata). He buscado en el internet pero no aparece nadie. Agradeceria si alguien me puede dar un dato.
I. In the UK but I'll mention it in my live stream tomorrow maybe one of my subs knows someone out there
@@BrentHutchinson Thanks, I found someone in Manhattan @ Guitar Center on 14th Street
D piezo can no longer b used. Do u have to change d string to electric?
No
did you use a neck or a bridge pickup?
Neck pup
Did you ever find a better way of grounding the strings?
No it's still the same but works just fine
Sound like hollow guitar
It doesnt sound that good really. As a gimmick its ok for som fun.
