Great reaction. It's the other way around though, Star Wars was inspired by Dune (the book came out in the 60s and George Lucas cites it as a major influence). It's really been fun to see how people with different knowledge of the material understood the story (I never read the book but saw the movie in the 80s). Looking forward to Part Two.

@@env0x The Star War movies took from the concepts in Dune. Finally putting them on screen as the Author intended is not taking "inspiration" from the Star War movies. Those vistas and concepts from the Star War Movies were there all along in the Dune book. You can not put Dune on film and then say it was inspired by a movie that used the original concept. First impressions are a powerful Human trait. But Dune could only look the way it did because of the original book. The fact that another movie "borrowed" that look is fine. But it is not accurate to say that it was the "inspiration" for the "look" of this Dune movie. That "look" was there 12 years before Star Wars existed.

@@donny1960 settle down Joe, he's not entirely wrong. The scene like the last sunset scene on the protagonists home planet before he goes off on an adventure was visually and thematically a reference to A New Hope when Luke is looking at the Binary Sunset and Paul looks out at the sun over the ocean. Also, the scene where Paul has a vision of Jamis telling him to "go with the flow" and "let go" while in the ornithopter inside the sandstorm is very much like Obi Wan telling Luke to let go of his computer and "use the force." Yes, Dune came first, and Dune inspired Star Wars to insane degrees. And the force and Jedi are heavily inspired by the Bene Gesserit especially with the Voice and "Jedi mind tricks." But those two scenes in Dune are definitely subtle directorial nods to Star Wars: A New Hope. Bringing things full circle.

They aren't all different species/aliens. They are all Humans. In the Dune universe, Humanity spread out amongst the stars, colonizing, and have yet to discover an intelligent extraterrestrial species. The worms are another life form, but they are an animal species. Humanity has settled many star systems, and they all fall under the Emporers rule, and the houses of the Landsraad (like a council of noble houses, of which the Atreides house and the Harkonnen house are a part of. It is a feudal system). Dune universe is set over 20 thousand years in the future.

Dates with respect to any calendar we use today are speculative by the fandom or come from dubious sources. Frank Herbert never said exactly. We know that canonically it's our universe, in the very distant future, but it's been so long that Earth is practically a myth at this point and so much history has happened in the meantime that it doesn't really matter how many years it's been.

Dune inspired Star Wars and Game of Thrones. Out in the 60s it really is the modern start point for science fiction/fantasy. The 1980s movie was generally considered a failure because it tried to do the impossible tell the Dune story in a single movie. As time passed that movie has become beloved for its failing attempt. The SYFI channel did a series of mini-series on the first three Dune novels. Since Herbert’s death other writers have added at least a dozen books as prequels and sequels. But modern science fiction begins with Dune.

I'd give some credit to Asimov as well, with Foundation. But combined, Dune and Foundation are the original canon of modern science fiction. They are also two sides of essentially the same coin. Foundation came first, and Dune was a response to it, with Herbert rejecting many of the assumptions Asimov made with his speculative future.

Its so great seeing newcomers to Dune. It's been a book since 1965 and was considered unfilmable. It's really great to see how much information was actually included in the movie. You got all of the major points, without anything having to be "explained" on screen. That's one of the best parts of the movie: it gives newcomers the same info that us old, diehard fans have...and you paid attention enough to pick up on it pretty quickly. The only thing is there are no aliens in Dune. Everyone is human--the sandworms are the only "aliens" you see. Heh...even that ugly spider thing in the Harkonnen's meeting room was human, which just shows how gross and disgusting the Harkonnens are. The best part is that you went through breaking the film down and didn't just react and leave. That was great wo watch. Great work. Everyone is human. They aren't different races, rather different noble houses under a form of space feudalism based on the Holy Roman Empire (Medieval Germany), with heavy Persian Influence (Dune was written between the US overthrow of Iran's government to control its oil and the Iranian revolution). Arrakis and the spice are metaphors for the "Riches of the Orient", with obvious references to the oil trade in the middle east, as well as to the Crusades for the Holy Land in Jerusalem. There is also heavy Arabic influence, particularly with the character of Paul, who is a sci-fi version of TE Lawrence (of Arabia), leading the desert people to overthrow their oppressors (the Harkonens).

I'm sure I'm the thousandth person to say this but a lot of the inspiration for Star Wars came from Dune.
The desert planet tatooine, Jabba the Hutt Baron Harkonnen the chosen one Kwisatz Haderach, spice mining, and of course the force, were heavily influenced by Dune.
I'm not saying this is bad Dune was heavily influenced by Lawrence of Arabia. And on and on, but having read the book before Star Wars came out I couldn't help but notice the similarities.
18:35 everyone in the movie is human there are no alien species at least in these movies. Although the year is 10,000 it's actually 20,000 years in our future, so humans have diversified a bit and changed but they're still humans originally from Earth. They just live on different planets now.

Star wars is Dune for kids.
Dune is more complex and brainy. Lucas took the cool elements of Dune and shoved it into a kid friendly adventure named Star Wars.

Star Wars was influenced by the book Dune. George Lucas said he got a lot of his ideas for SW from reading Dune. Also Jessica, a sister of the Bene Gesserit was reciting the Fear mantra. (Fear is the mind killer, I must face my fear and let it pass through me) That's when Paul stares the Rev. Mother in her eyes. Jessica taught her son all she learn in her Bene Gesserit training . This is what Paul is reciting to himself during the test with the Rev. Mother. Jessica and all the Bene Gesserit are human, they just been trained from birth to have special skills. Lastly, the visions Paul was seeing was a holy Jihad in his name. Which he did not want. The holy war will be in part 2. Paul's not a hero and he knows this.
