    These are great tents. I did similar mods including changing the poles. I bought 10mm poles and simply used a pipe cutter to get the right length. Really simple. I only sold mine because rain would drive under the rain cap and then soak the inside.

    As below - you can add an oil lubricant or wax to zips. Unsure how they work in really cold weather, where buttons are often preferred in places like Finland and Russia

    I have used a short velcro strip attached to one half of the bottom square of velcro on the zip storm flaps and the other end wrapped around the pole. This prevents the zip from catching the flap and pulling it into the zip, Happens mostly when tent is wet and you are opening the door from inside

    My zip went, I was lucky enough to fix mine by changing from a Double zip (on one sid to a single zip. I needed to sew and fuse the zip together for about 4 or 5 inches at the top but Im chuffed I saved it. Still a great tent I use mine when I want space but the forecast isnt to bad and take the Helm 2 Compact when it looks rough. Great Vid keepp up the good work

    All good advice, especially replacing the guylines with Dyneema. Even with the original poles there is far more structural rigidity in wind if they are interwoven, ie if each of the three poles goes over and under one of the other two. More of a faff setting up, but worth it. Also IIRC Quintcraft used to do (larger) rain caps to order... All the best.

    If you use a screwdriver you can pry open the gap in the zip pull, put it back where it I should go, then carefully close it back not too much though then use silicone spray or similar should work on most zips.

    Hello everyone. I measured a net pole length of 369,2 cm by tape measure. Measured 3 times. Also measured the 10 sections of each pole. The first 3 sections on each end measure 34,8 cm net length each, that is without the inserts ! That's 6 sections of 34,8. The 4 middle sections of each pole have a net length of 40,1 cm without the inserts. The 369,2 is also without the end tips on each end of the pole.

    Run a wax candle down the outside and inside of the door zips. Won't ever snag. Did that to my Cloud Peak 2 and never had a problem with them. My issue with the Cloud Peak 2 is the sheer amount of mesh. The top is mesh and so are the doors. Great to prevent condensation, lousy for staying warm. All the hot air vanishes and I end up cold, even with a thermarest and a really warm sleeping bag. I might be adding some velcro to the inside with adhesive silicone and adding a silver emergency blanket cut to size, to the top of the tent to keep some heat in. There's plenty of ventilation from the mesh doors.

    • @GoodBlokeOutdoors
      @GoodBlokeOutdoors  Před rokem

      Never knew that about the candle wax, i'll remember that for any tents that I have any zip issues with in the future.
      Yeah lots of mesh with these tents, its a 3 season tent at most really.

    Not sure to upgrade poles or just bite bullet and put money towards a Terra Nova 4 season tent.
    I've also upgrade the hat thing. Put thin wire around the edge and stops the flapping in the wind

    Great video! Why do people think that 4-season means that it should handle everything? Tents that can handle extreme wind are Alpine, mountaineering, basecamp or expedition tents. They are not the same as a 4-season tent. Cloud peak is not a 4-season, I agree on that.

    • @ashab1
      @ashab1 Před rokem +1

      I was under the impression 4 season just a meant snow skirt and a thicker inner? An alpine tent is probably more than most people need in the UK?

    Hexagon groundsheet n velcrow around the outer bottoms attsching to the ground is my next mission once i do my poles. Also though about getting a.tarp n cutting a larger roof fly n edging its hem eith curtain wire to take it past the inner doors to give more roof spread to stop rain in verstibule or i also like putting a tarp over tent in harsher rainy conditions so you can open her up in the rain...tie that baby down though

    We all do mods to our tents in 1 way or another some major some little simple things I've just ordered some 10mm poles for my niak.its difficult to do mods when the thing that fails i.e the zip can fail at any time from what I've heard people say and at the end of the day you get why you pay for more money should equal better materials and construction

    • @GoodBlokeOutdoors
      @GoodBlokeOutdoors  Před rokem

      Thats it mate, you get what you pay for. Can’t go wrong with upgrading to 10mm poles for the Niak, that sounds like a mod that will be well worth it. 👍🏼 thanks for watching Craig.

    Great video again. I was looking at tentpole upgrade and found DAC Featherlite but they would cost more than the whole tent AND because of their widening end you can't cut them to size. Can you add a link to the store where you bought these 9.5 mm poles?

    Hello everyone. Can the Cloud Peak 2 be adapted to be a true 4th season / winter tent ? This tent is a copy of the Hilleberg Allak 2 (and Soulo 1 person version). From the Hilleberg product page:
    - Kerlon 1200 outer tent fabric and 9mm poles make for a very lightweight yet supremely stable tent.
    - All season construction: outer tent walls extend to the ground and mesh areas are backed with adjustable fabric panels.
    - Dome construction with multiple pole crossing points provide outstanding snow-load handling capability.
    Also, the outer tent of a winter tent should (be able to) extend close to the ground and/or have snow skirts.
    The Cloud Peak 2 has 3 crossing poles BUT they all cross close together in the top of the tent diminishing the desired effect to strengthen the tent, especially from wind and snow loads. It may technically be a geodesic tent with multiple crossing poles but it lacks the real strength the way it is implemented.
    The mesh parts of the inner cannot be closed off like in the Hilleberg Allak and there is no optional winter inner tent available with all closed fabric. So keeping warmth inside and draft outside is problematic.
    I think a true winter tent is a 4th season tent only, not an all 4-seasons tent. In the summer you want a tent with a (complete) mesh inner (optional for the Allak 2) and good bottom and top ventilation for optimal airflow and minimal condensation. You don't want a sauna / sweat lodge.
    Lastly, I also think the Cloud Peak can be used as is in mild winter conditions. So you can enjoy this tent year around but you have to pick your battles in the winter. Who of us really needs a bomb proof mountaineering expedition tent ? So let's all enjoy our Cloud Peak 2 !
