  • Is C-390 Millennium Better Than C-130J Super Hercules?
Today we will compare Embraer C-390 Millennium with Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules. After dominating the medium-lift military tactical market for decades the company's turboprop C-130J Hercules is facing new competition from Embraer turbofan C-390 Millennium. It wouldn't be the first aircraft to try to take on the Hercules. The Alenia C-27J Spartan was probably the closest attempt. C-27J Spartan is a 10-ton class turboprop aircraft. Instead of the typical turboprop design that dominates the market. The C-390 has a high swept wing and two turbofan engines. With that design it cruises at a speed of 870km/h or 0.7 Mach and at an altitude of 36000ft or 11000 meters. Whereas Hercules cruises at a speed of about 644 km/h or 0.5 Mach and at an altitude of 28000ft or 8500 meters. Millennium has a combat range of 5820 km or 3600 mi with 14000 kg or 30800 lb payload. Whereas Hercules has a combat range of 3300 km or 2100 mi with 15,400 kg or 34,000 lb payload. According to the Embraer case study, a fleet of six C-390s flying 1600 mi or 2500km round trips were able to deliver 500 ton payload and 1000 passengers in less than two days. Which is 40% faster than the C-130J.

Thanks for the nice video. I would like to mention a few points, an advantage of the C-390 is that it can carry up to 26 tons of concentrated cargo, such as an armored vehicle on wheels, or up to 23 tons of distributed cargo. In addition, its internal dimensions are larger and there is no loss of height at the wing/fuselage junction as with the C-130, as its project is 5 decades younger and this allows for more efficient forms of construction, this can make a difference between being able to carry certain military vehicles as recently demonstrated in the Czech Republic with a Pandur II 8x8, while the C-130 could not.

@@THE-BZH-BOY For any aircraft, before loading and refueling, it is necessary to carry out calculations that consider many important parameters such as altitude of the runway location, its length, ambient temperature, wind speed and direction, for example. The result will determine the maximum takeoff weight for those conditions and then with what maximum load you can take off to reach the desired point. It should be remembered that the C-390 can be refueled in flight, so it could take off with a heavier load and receive more fuel at some point in the mission and thus reach the desired destination.

For those who don't know, ALBERTO SANTOS DUMONT, known as THE FATHER OF AVIATION, the same inventor of the wristwatch, of the large gates to bays, and the first to fly with the concept that today, the iconic (14 Bis) was Brazilian , but the US never accepted that the Wright Brothers were not the first to take off! in fact, the US has always had a strong media, inside and out of the country, and that's why they spread their declaration to the world...
Brazilians on the other hand are very determined when they want to do something really good on a world level, and one of the results is in the KC-390 MILENIUM...
The great powers already see Brazil as a threat of a future power, and that's why they don't accept them doing big business around the world...

But please stop spreading that he invented the wristwatch
The wristwatch was invented waaaay before him, the first one that have a historical register was made to Napoleon's sister in 1812
What Dumont did was that he popularized the wristwatch between men, because until that time, it was a thing that only women used
He did in fact, ordered a watchmaker to make a wristwatch for him due to a pocket watch being kinda of dangerous to use while flying

The 14 Bis flew in November 2006, managing 220m over 22 seconds?
I take it you don't believe the Wright Brothers had already managed 38,900m on 05 October 2005, with controllable flight, turning and climbing?
They certainly proved they could do it, once they started demonstrations in 1908.
      What am I missing here?
I guess they used a catapult. But I don't see any reason they would have had to, any aircraft that can fly for half an hour could certainly take off under its own power if it had a long enough runway.
Wright Brothers were first, but they kept their secrets to themselves ... got their patent, but then refused to give demonstrations. Why would they do that? Simple: Wilbur wrote to Chanute in late 1906, "...we are convinced that no one will be able to develop a practical flyer within five years." Arrogant pricks. They were obsolete within 5 years. Didn't stop them from trying to sue everyone else who made controllable flight.
Oh, I don't know. They were right to fear that their designs would be copied if they made the public. They would have been. And I'm sure they were. But even after Dumont made his flights, the Wright Brothers still remained arrogant pricks. "From our knowledge...he has only jumped...When someone goes over three hundred feet and lands safely in a wind of seven or eight miles it will then be important for us to do something. So far we see no indication that it will be done for several years yet."
It wasn't until after potential buyers had seen proof of powered flight (from other people) that they were willing to put down money to buy the Wright Brothers.
We probably give them too much credit anyways. France dominated the flying scene by the end of the decade, while the Wright Brothers were too busy filing lawsuits to keep up...
I'll take Santos Dumont over them any day. “Santos Dumont’s great dream was to produce a relatively simple and inexpensive plane that ordinary folks could buy or build and operate. He wanted to share the joy of flying with the masses.” -- Tom Crouch, senior curator of aeronautics at the National Air and Space Museum
Or another one: The June 1910 edition of Popular Mechanics published drawings of the Demoiselle and wrote "This machine is better than any other which has ever been built, for those who wish to reach results with the least possible expense and with a minimum of experimenting." American companies sold drawings and parts of Demoiselle for several years thereafter. Santos-Dumont was so enthusiastic about aviation that he released the drawings of Demoiselle for nothing, thinking that aviation would be the cause of a new prosperous era for mankind.
And certainly his lighter-than-air dirgible flying around the Eifel Tower in 1901 is more captivating than the Wright Brother's early gliders of the same time period.
His achievements are just as impressive as the Wright Brothers, and he's far more of a hero than they ever were.
      But was he first? No.
Ah well. In any case, this should be a simple matter to solve. Santos Dumont was in Paris in August of 1908 when the Wright Brothers did their demonstrations there, wasn't he? What did he have to say on the matter?*
I haven't been able to find anything, and alas, I can't read French even if I could find a news article quoting him from that time. But apparently his efforts to build an airplane were inspired by stories of the Wright Brothers in 1903. If anything, it's amazing that only took him 3 years to catch up, working from scratch.
"...we are convinced that no one will be able to develop a practical flyer within five years," in late 1906. Man, I actually hate the Wright Brothers now. Willing to bet Santos Dumont did too, seeing how he released his designs for free for the benefit of the public, donated a lot of the prize money he won, and was exceedingly humble. Meanwhile the Wright Brothers patented, sued, and sold their designs to the military.
Anyone got quotes or writings from Dumont? I'd love to read them, particularly if they're from 1906-1912.
Here's one I found: On 25 July 1909, Louis Blériot crossed the English Channel, becoming a hero in France. In a letter, Santos-Dumont congratulated Blériot, his friend, with the following words: "This transformation of geography is a victory of air navigation over sea navigation. One day, perhaps, thanks to you, the airplane will cross the Atlantic". Blériot then replied, "I have done nothing but follow and imitate you. Your name to the aviators is a flag. You are our leader."
*It's actually possible he did not attend. He stopped building aircraft in 1909, and fell sick with multiple sclerois around the same time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberto_Santos-Dumont#Last_years But all the same, I desperately want to hear his thoughts

Another thing is aftersales, which is just as important as purchasing the plane. You bought that plane, so you want to use it and not let is rest due to lack of parts or support from the factory who build it. One of the reasons the RNLAF wants to have the KC is that the helpdesk, the aftersales and the parts availability is better then with Lockheed. Embraer sees no big diffences between a commercial plane and a military cargo plane. As soon as they can not fly, it is not good. Due to RNLAF Embraer walks a bit faster, so to speak.
Another reason was that five KC 390 's seem to cost less then four C130 J.s, while having more payload, speed and actiradius.

There are versions for surveillance and gunships and much more. It's also more fuel efficient and cost effective than a turbofan engined plane. It's cheaper to operate and you can land it on a shorter runway than C-390 and fly a lot lower avoiding radar detection. I'm not saying it's better in cargo capacity or speed, just that it doesn't matter because it's better operating in an actual combat zone because you're less likely to be shot down.

For the medium cargo the Millineuam is better. Buy it ... then drink your Brazilian coffee even though you think it's Colombian or Indonesian. It isn't.

Simply WRONG the information on the video about payload arguing C-130J with a bigger payload.
In fact C-390 payload is upper 25 tons payload...
    Exactly 26 000 kg (57 300 lb)
    Study better in Defense BRO...

The C-130 is still more versatile and can loiter longer and can land or take off from almost any mostly flat surface

    The short answer is no
The C-130J has proven flexibility across various model types

    • @luismoreira831
      @luismoreira831 Před rokem
