  • Walking around the top of Mount Tamalpais offers a breathtaking journey through one of California's most iconic natural landscapes. As you ascend the winding roads or trails to reach the summit, the anticipation builds, knowing that panoramic vistas and serene beauty await you at the top.
Beginning the walk at the summit parking area ($8.00 Parking fee), the crisp mountain air invigorates your senses as you step off your motorcycle or disembark from your car. The first thing that strikes you is the expansive view stretching out before you in all directions. On clear days, you can see the sparkling expanse of the Pacific Ocean to the west, while to the east, the San Francisco Bay Area unfolds like a sprawling patchwork of urban and natural wonders.
As you walk, the peaceful serenity of Mount Tamalpais envelopes you, providing a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You may encounter fellow hikers along the way, exchanging smiles and nods of camaraderie as you all share in the wonder of this majestic landscape.
Throughout your journey, you'll come across scenic overlooks and hidden vantage points that beckon you to pause and take in the natural beauty surrounding you. Whether you're gazing out over the vast expanse of the Marin Headlands, marveling at the towering redwoods at Muir Woods, or simply enjoying the tranquility of the mountain breeze, each moment is a reminder of the awe-inspiring power of nature.
As you complete your circuit around the summit of Mount Tamalpais, you feel a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for having experienced such a remarkable place. Whether you're a seasoned hiker seeking a new adventure or simply looking for a peaceful escape into nature, walking around the top of Mount Tamalpais offers an unforgettable journey that will stay with you long after you've returned to the valley below.
The Mount Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railway, commonly known as the Crookedest Railroad in the world, was a historic narrow-gauge railroad that operated in Marin County, California, from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. This railway was a marvel of engineering and a beloved icon of the region, offering breathtaking vistas and access to the natural wonders of Mount Tamalpais and Muir Woods.
The railroad was inaugurated in 1896 and quickly became a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from near and far to experience the beauty of Mount Tamalpais and the surrounding forests. Its route wound its way up the steep slopes of the mountain, utilizing switchbacks, and trestles, to navigate the rugged terrain.
One of the most famous features of the Mount Tamalpais Railroad was the Gravity Car, a specially designed railcar that used the mountain's natural slope to propel itself downhill without the need for an engine. Passengers would board the Gravity Car at the summit and enjoy a thrilling ride back down the mountain, taking in spectacular views along the way.
In addition to its scenic excursions, the Mount Tamalpais Railroad also played a crucial role in the development of the region, transporting lumber, supplies, and passengers to and from the mountain's summit. Its presence contributed to the growth of nearby communities and provided essential access to the natural resources of the area.
Sadly, the Mount Tamalpais Railroad ceased operations in 1930 due to declining ridership and the increasing popularity of automobiles. While the tracks and infrastructure have largely been removed, the legacy of the railroad lives on in the form of hiking trails, historical markers, and preserved artifacts.
Today, visitors to Mount Tamalpais can still explore remnants of the old railway, including sections of track, and the Gravity Car exhibit at the top of the mountain. Although the Mount Tamalpais Railroad may be gone, its spirit of adventure and exploration continues to inspire all who visit this majestic mountain.

This wonderful video reminds me of the many solo trips I made to Mt. Tam during the years I was privileged to live in Marin-Mill Valley, Stinson Beach and Bolinas, with my son Paul, the narrator here, and his brothers, David and Dan. Grandson Ryan is a native--born Californian; the rest of the family emigrated from Texas.
I can almost smell the madrone and the pure, fresh invigorating mountaintop sea air.

I like crows, they are smart. Have some in my backyard trees. I remember doing this tour with you Paul. Cool on the dates in the cave. I like Ryan's talks and info. He seems to be a natural naturalist. Maybe flown your drone a bit from the top?

The top has a large cold war radar system. I think it's still active because the drone said it had major magnetic interface.
