  • This is a edited version of lifting Pearl, live broadcasting. The copy of the footage had no issues at the end of the video like the live broadcast did. Anyhow I decided to repost and include the intro and outro. We officially start on the Monarch lathe with it's refurbishment.

What a sweet project! Dammm, I'm excited and it's not even in my garage. Working a few WW2 era projects myself. When I think of these machines working through those times while we fought for our lives,......... well, they deserve the time, work and appreciation. Just some thoughts.

@@tsmartin I was noticing that too! One of my EDC items is a Zippo 6' tape measure that was an "employee gimme" from years ago. They had them made with the company logo. I have two. One new in the box and one that lives in my right front pocket! On a keychain in my left pocket is a tiny Brinkmann flashlight, a tiny Craftsman crescent wrench, a Snap On 1/8" combination wrench (I build R/C toys) and some little multi tool. Be prepared! ;)

Hi Keith, Good to see you making progress in your shop and also having a social life.
I agree with you on posture when running any machinery, and just a small height change can make a huge difference. I did a small job on one of my mates lathes, which is basically identical to mine, and my back really suffered, and I am sure it is the height of his lathe is lower than mine. I will do some measurements one day to see exactly.
I was watching the beam on your gantry when you started to lift and it didn't move, be interesting to know the weight of Pearl, but Monarch's are not light weights.
Fathers' day in Oz is in September, but a happy fathers' day to you.
    Regards Dennis.

I just found out about muriatic acid. It has many applications, the main one is cleaning concrete. You can also clean rust off of metal with it. But you have to be careful and not let any splatter get on to your person and use in well ventilated area.
