That said, I wish there was an easy way to get ahold of Chinese and Korean fans' opinions from here in NA

As a Seoul fan this is far too relatable. It feels like the team becomes less popular year on year and it’s only the old Lunatic Hai supporters (like myself) and/or fans of players like Tobi or Profit that stick with the team right now. Bring back RJH :(

For me I think that it just came from them being the only Korean team in OWL - back when it started I was just "hur dur Koreans are the best" without really identifying Korean talent across the league, or rising NA talent. But I think it's just important to stick with your pick - it doesn't feel the same when a team I'm jumping on the bandwagon for (Paris) wins, but when Seoul wins big it's huge. The longer you stick by a team, the better the payoff. Looking at all the new Dragon fans with disappointment tbh. I also want to see content from them. Profit and Gesture are actually great personalities and we need more of them. At least I get to see lots of Jecse (RIP) on Outlaws YT.

Well, first there are some SERIOUS rivalries between D.C., Philly, NYC, and Boston. My brother hasn't forgiven Bryce Harper for moving from the Nationals to the Phillies. Second, who else is the mid-Atlantic supposed to root for?! There's no one to cheer on between Washington and Atlanta, so guess where many people from Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and North Carolina are going to put their support.

You also have to consider that Washington was an expansion team. In season 1, the East Coast had NYXL, Philly, and Boston, *all 3 of which* made the playoffs that year (and Florida, but they were garbage), so you had ample choice on the East Coast. Those original loyalties, even if Washington became the closest team to them geographically once Season 2 came around, stick, and it doesn't help that Washington was a dumpster fire for the season's first 3 stages

London- Am from UK, being a fan of this team in season 1 was one hell of a ride
Toronto- Big Mangachu fan, especially after the Torb 1v1. Also Kruise is on there who I remember watching in 2017 World Cup
Boston- Watching team UK beat team USA in 2018 might be my favourite Overwatch memory, so I'll always be a Fusions fan. Also pretty cool colours. Please win more.
Paris- Representing EU is pretty cool, and they pop tf off. I really like how 9K proved himself this year as well, shows the Shock wasn't all Krusty

Really good video. I've seen a lot of people say "if you aren't a fan of ______ team, because they lack personality, you're not trying to see their personality" which is a poor way of saying that if you don't like a team with poor marketing, it's your fault. For example, I'm sorry that London's new team was thrown together because they wanted out of the league because even after a finals win, it's not as profit-able as they hoped. Even if they continued making their videos tbh, I probably wouldn't watch them because I didn't know they had such videos in season 1 and 2 because there's a language barrier and I don't enjoy reading subtitles while watch a video or listening to a translator. And I also would still have a tough time liking the team, because their gameplay is relatively low quality. Just an extremely unmarketable team tbh. That being said, I also don't understand liking a team because they're your home team, unless it's Paris. Because that's one of the only teams with players representative of their specific region. However London is first for that and Boston is second? Why? You literally have no reason to like these teams besides, "oh it's the closest one to me" Perhaps it's because I live roughly equidistant from about 3-4 teams (4.5-6.5 hours by car) but I would much rather go watch a better match, than a worse match. For example, if I'm going to go to a Toronto homestand, I'm only going if, at that homestand, Paris and Philly play vs each other as well. Or something very similar to that. I wouldn't go to a nearby homestand to see the team who's homestand it is. I'm going for overwatch, and good overwatch.
TLDR: Location, Branding, Social Media presence doesn't matter to me. Marketability (Personality/player nationality) and gameplay are important, because that's what I see as representative of the team more than anything else

For some reason I missed this survey.
I'm a Fusion fan because I'm a die hard Philadelphia Flyers fan, which is the bigger brother to the team. I became a Flyers fan in the 90s because of Eric Lindros and because orange is my favorite color (and I think I was 8 when I made that decision) and the Fusion carrying on the colors is very nice. I guess this counts as being a fan because of a prior organization? Over time and through internet-friendship with a bunch of Flyers fans from Philadelphia I was also more or less recruited into rooting for other sports teams from the city, despite being austrian myself. Anyway, I also liked the diversity the Fusion brought on the table, with a lot of different nationalities involved. For some time they even had an austrian player associated with them in Kabaji as a streamer. And of course carpe is awesome.

As a paris fan i can say that the reason why i love this team is cause i m french and having a french team in owl made me so happy that i became instantely fan.
The i was a big fan of soon and fdgod/sparkle due to their performance in contenders.
When paris became a top owl team i loved them also for their gameplay.
I mean for me everything is so good with this team.
    And great vid tho

This survey's sample does not make it representative of the OW population. But, this is a great indicator of relative trends. This is a lot of hard work and thanks for doing this.

So about location, i'm pretty sure that the korean/chinese based team and Paris have most of their fanbase in their respective countries. But since there's so few of them who watch anything in English it's hard to tell.
And yeah most of the French people don't watch anything in English, but they're pretty dedicated, i remember seeing that the french stream for the summer showdown still had more than 5000 viewers at the end of the finals, which was like 5 or 6 am in EU.

When I started watching OWL, the first game I saw was Philly vs Glads all the way back in like Stage 1 of the first season. I didn't know anything about the teams so I picked the Glads to root for because they wore purple. After the Great Bamboozle, I've stuck with them ever since.

I appreciate the analysis, super interesting video.
Some of this really is statistically meaningful, but 1400 is realistically a small dataset, especially with the actual questions asked. Like, when you say things like “20% of the fan base” when referring to 5 people (Titans), that is virtually meaningless.
It would be interesting to see what could be found from this by somebody with a data analysis background, or what could be found with a larger data set (over a longer period of time).

I can understand the Fuel fan's response at this point, I originally got into the Fuel from them having Taimou, xQc and Seagull on their roster thanks to watching them on Twitch, so I tried following Dallas primarily in S1 and the Glads because of Surefour and later Fissure. After the absolute dumpster fire that was S1 Fuel, I stuck with them (and Glads) moving into Season 2 thinking that maybe they were on the right path.....until it was pretty clear they weren't, so after watching the rise of the Shock in Stage 1 and their stonks growing with personalities (don't forget Crusty in that topic, man is a meme) and potential, I decided to get off Dallas's wild ride because there was no hope in sight and move onto a team that was looking good for wins (also because I really didn't like the Titans for some reason). Bearing in mind, I did this probably week 5, so I wouldn't exactly say full bandwagon, but maybe early bandwagon-ish, them losing the Stage 1 final sealed the deal for me though with them and I'm still here now. I got bored of the Glads quickly after Surefour left so I'm sorta into the Mayhem at the moment for 2nd pick because their socials are great, but also they seem like they've got a good group of people at the moment, and yeah, I'll admit full bandwagon with that one though. I have a friend who still follows the Fuel, but I think he's deeply wondering why he's still there at this point lmao.
