The Debate on Gen Z’s Work Ethic

- As a whole, Baby Boomers, those born between 1946 -1964, believe they have worked hard, sacrificed, and paid their dues - and that the younger generation is entitled and sits on social media all day, expecting to get everything handed to them. However, Gen Z, those born between 1997 - 2012, blame Baby Boomers for the current state of the environment and the economy. Since 2019, the hashtag #okboomer has been used 3.7 B times on TikTok to describe a Baby Boomer being “out of touch.” Is Gen Z really being coddled, whereas Boomers “pulled themselves up by their bootstraps”? And, how is that affecting their mental health? Dr. Phil discusses these generational differences -- societal values, work ethic, use of technology -- and if these two generations, 50 years apart, are really that different, after all. (21029RR)

As a 21 year old, it’s just hard to find the motivation when I make 17.65/hr 40 hrs a week and cannot get an apartment unless I am with a roommate let alone having to have a good credit score, and other requirements just to spend over 1,000 for rent and utilities every month. And on top of that is I try to get into government help like amha, food stamps, then I automatically make too much with the hours I work. It’s just now you have to find people that will take a chance on you even when you already know your worth and work ethic. I absolutely love my job I’m a phone repair tech but the cost of living now is just unreasonably high and it really sucks because as a young girl I always wanted a family in a decent house, decent yard and be able to do what I need and want for my children, but now we have to really lower our standards which is fine but why were we in a better cost of living in the first place if what we used to have we can’t even provide unless we are barely seeing our families, like I want to see my baby grow up instead of working my life away and then they are moving out. It’s just really sad and stressful to think about.
Am from Australia, I have my own apparent (my third property to be exact) I have not worked in 10 years, am on a dsp pension with which I pay my rent bills and other needs, the systems our governments have in place are not there to help the hard workers😢
@@candyguy775 So you don't work and apparently are a landlord. Not sure what your comment is about.
@Charlotte Coles I never said I was a landlord, when I say property I am talking about rentals... your not a charlotte, your a Karen...
Leilani, You're actually doing incredibly well for only being 21. A lot of people are still in college with a roommate at your age. Don't beat yourself up. I was making $8.75 when I was 21 (10 years ago). Also, unless you literally have to go days without eating due to not even being able to afford a 5$ sandwich, or have kids depending on you, you probably won't get accepted for EBT/food stamps. They're reserved for people who are at risk of not getting any nutrition via lack of food. I fell on hard times myself after getting shot in multiple places, and unfortunately couldn't work so had to get food stamps myself. Hated having to rely on somebody to pay for me to eat, but I was losing a ton of weight from only being able to afford to eat MAYBE once a day. Plus heart problems from malnutrition. There are food pantries you could go to though if you absolutely need to.
@@breezystl777 Thank you😭 that actually means so much to me because I really don’t feel like I am doing enough at all. I know I do enough to get by, but a lot of people have a savings account and it’s just extremely hard for me to save money and it makes me feel so unaccomplished when I hear people have like 12k in their savings around my age while I live paycheck to paycheck. Also, I did want to say I am very sorry to hear about your circumstances you were in. It really sucks the cost of living just keeps getting more and more expensive, at this point it’s better to build a treehouse in the woods and grow your own crops or get a mobile home honestly which I have been thinking about if I could save up the money for it.
It’s because we work our asses off and can’t afford to live. We are treated like slaves. If one has an education and works 40 plus hours a week, we should be able to afford a car and a house. And I’m not talking about anything fancy.
I thought it was common sense that credit and work experience was earned over time. This new generation thinks its an app they can download. 😂
@@randomxl25 I'm gen z and I have great credit and lots of work experience I make $15.50 an hour. I don't think its asking for too much for just bare minimum stuff that my parents and my eldest sibling got doing less. So idk what you're smoking thinking "iTs aN ApP tHey CaN dOwnLoaD"
Keep dreaming. Many of us older people worked first in starter positions, even with a college degree in hand. College gives you academic education, real life jobs give you experience. Be more humble, learn from real life work experiences and then you will have a chance to do better in the future.
They are delusional.
@@randomxl25 yeah common sense is good and all.
I use 1970 as an example. Average earning was about 17K, across the country. In 2020 that average was about 68k.
The average price of a home in the 70s was roughly 25k. So a full year of work would cover largely 60/70ish compared to the annual earnings.
The average home in 2020 cost 284k. So the average earnings from that year are roughly in the low 20s of percentage for paying that off.
And you understand how an average wage would work right that 50% of people are paid less than that and it typically does slant out of favor from younger people.
So effectively and this is if we're just using the national averages, it is effectively 3 times harder for everyone to buy a house.
And this is just a single type of expense explained like this.
If it was adjusted to the modern inflation that 25k house is estimated to go on the market for 184k.
That 17K, in 2020 would it be the equivalent of being paid 125 k annually.
You old people need to stop exaggerating how well you did anything. You were genuinely paid more than twice as much as we are, even if you took lower salaries.
The average 30-40k annual income of someone young now is the equivalent of living off roughly $4-5k a year which in those times would be less than $400 a month.
I don’t think boomers understand how difficult it is to get started in America’s current economy. When they were younger, things were much simpler (and I envy them for that) it’s not that we have no work ethic, we ARE working!! It’s just hard because we have nothing to show for it other than simply surviving. We can’t move out because rent is too high and the housing market is insane. We can’t save large amounts of money because the cost of living is so high. The depression that comes with this often causes people to not want to work. Not because they are lazy, but because of true motivation. Stepping out into a world on fire is extremely anxiety inducing. Please look at the whole picture before accusing and entire generation of people.
Yeah, well it would be nice if people that weren't even born stopped saying how easy and simple it was then. In the 60s, an unmarried woman would have a tough time even getting a credit card. Most families of 6-8 had one car and grew up in a house with one bathroom. We grew a garden to save money, canned, sewed clothes and walked everywhere. Yes, shockingly MANY mothers also had to have paid jobs. Kids actually had regular chores often without an allowance. Young men turning 18 were forced into the draft to fight an illegitimate war. Oh yeah, there were also student loans and most kids' parents DID NOT pay for college. Everyone had roommates and struggled with rent and costs, believe me- it was not easy. Try buying a house with 18 percent mortgage rates like in the early 80s. These struggles are not new or unique. It has always been hard for average-earning people to save for a down payment. Very hard.
@@lizze490why is the gap of home ownership so big? You think it’s mostly laziness or what?
@@amdg01007You obviously didn't read my comment- it's ALWAYS been hard- you're naively believing a lie that it was easier. It's still hard now not just for younger people but for EVERYONE.
And you don't seem to understand how difficult it was for a BLACK MALE BOOMER to even eat in the same restaurant as your parents in 1963. We also couldn't get a house (discrimination), vote (we were shot, or hanged or lynched), get adequate education (ever hear of Brown vs. the Board of Education in 1954)? You paint your complaints with a wide brushstroke, tarring over the plight of Blacks in 1956, who had a WAY harder time than you (and it was your grandfathers and grandmothers and fathers and mothers who did this). So, realign your criticism of BOOMERS, because many of us are Black and we didn't get diddly in that era.
Its called an entry level job because nobody gets hired as managers or CEO. It takes years to get promoted. Ever hear your grandparents say how they would walk to work and work 12 hour shifts 6 days a week? Actually talk to your parents. 100% they will say how they spent years gaining experience, making minimum wage, and getting crapped on at work for decades. Its takes years to build skills, gain a reputation, and a work history. Gen z will not put in the work.

Because every generation keeps getting more spoiled and more worthless.
As a 25 year old male, if you want it you can go get it. My generation seems like it would rather just not work. Like they get the job and show up but then that’s it. They don’t actually work. Working and showing up are different.

I have 3 years of mental health crisis experience under my belt and a degree in family studies. I'm a licensed social worker and I'm 1 year away from an MSW and added licensure to be a therapist. I make $15-$17 because that's what Medicaid/Medicare pays for my line of work in my state. I work full time and it's honestly not enough. With inflation since COVID going up 40% where I live, you need to make $24 to live comfortably now. The fast food restaurant that I live nearby pays $14.40 starting out. I've been really angry with the economical situation. Back in the 80`s people with bachelor's degrees could afford to make a good living. Now people can't. My sister also recently got her bachelor's in law and constitutional studies and she makes just a little more than I do. Same with my friend with a degree in computer science. There are very few growth opportunities for gen z and millennials. We are also seeing a lot of 40 year old + people going back to school and taking our starter positions at companies because they would rather hire older people due to the stigma around millennials and gen z. So not only are we competing against our age group for work, but the older generation too. We are broke, angry, in debt, and the song "Allen Town" really is hitting our vibe. Sometimes I'm so upset after all this work that I don't want to show up, because what's the point?
Takes me back to the early 1980s and the recession that started in the late 1970s. No jobs because there weren't enough for all of us in the recession. It was tough. Persistence, and the absolute fact that economic conditions do change, won the day...finally.
Brother I’m 34 HS diploma making over 80k with a staffing company, and my work/life balance is amazing. No one can tell me hard work doesn’t pay off, I’m doing something that statistically I shouldn’t be.
Hard work just needs to be applied to the right places.
At my job, I know how to do everything, including the managers work. There are times where I'll have no days off during a week and would constantly work doubles because of people that are younger or older than me, calling out all the time. Not only that, I do security camera installations on the side. My work ethic is solid until I get to the point to where I don't get proper rest and eventually crash. That's when I become sluggish. Even with all these hours, I can't afford to live on my own. Sometimes I question what's the point of all this? Work for a place that doesn't really give af about you, deal with customers that are unnecessarily rude, do repetitive unfulfilling work, and have little time for yourself because you have to finish school that is probably putting you in debt (student loans) that you'll have to pay off once you get a better paying job.
Just get your CDL you get a mini-apartment on wheels, and get to make money while seeing the country at a company's expense without college debt.
I observed a group on gen z working today it seemed more like a frat party get together than work
Exactly they all want to hang and be friends then do their job or take their job serious. Not to say don't make friends but choice the time and don't make it to be all the time kind of thing.

A bee doesn’t get free honey, the bee has to work for its food. Same thing with humans. We are just animals trying to survive. That’s our nature.
Let’s talk about pay ethic of boomers and gen x
if people focused on quality, hard work, and kindness, everything would be better.
Quality yes, kindness yes, HARD work no...why should something you dont even get paid fairly for, be hard on top? Why are we getting told by people, who dont work hard, to work hard, to make them richer? Why should we sacrifice our energy, lifetimes and sanity and not getting enough back? And I am saying this as millenial. Gen Z is just breaking out of the brainwashing and yeah some are taking to far. Also, this sissy dude is unhigned for sure.
If employers cared about employees, maybe young adults would see the value in work earlier. Of course, they’ll look back in many years and assume they always had a strong work ethic and will make fun of the younger generations. This has been going on for 2500 years.

@@chandamulenga3423Yeah, back in my day we called young people retarded and they respected us for it.
I work with Gen-Z people. Many are very hard working and go beyond the call of duty. They will take overtime shifts if offered. They also do an excellent job performance. Then there are others who are high maintenance to have as employees. They call in "sick", check their phones, do minimal work for maximum pay, want to go full time immediately and bypass senior workers, are concerned about how work tasks "make them feel", and cannot communicate properly if there are work problems. They will also do a half-baked job at work tasks when they were trained otherwise, and then not take accountability when caught.
the problem is people always chasing money, not everything is or even should be about money. Yet it is. This is why things are not evolving the way they should.

Btw, I work as a paraprofessional.
This is the fault of all generations.
Says the gen z
There’s a bigger issue here than simply “ not wanting to work “ .
Key points :
- hurt people, hurt people
- perpetuated anger from our aggressive race
- unruly cost of living
- neglect stemming from a broken system resulting in higher aggression levels
Honestly, this system’s long since been broken. And what we have now is the fall out of Gen x and Y and their neglect toward their children at the cost of convenient outlets used to influence us into investing more time than necessary to these under paying jobs . Consider all of the issues the younger generations are processing at the result of the older generations neglect and aggressive projections.
Ultimately, humans need to take two steps back before continuing to hit the same brick wall while expecting a different outcome .
Oh, and don’t forget about the effects of systemic racism and prejudice contributing to forcing many into lesser job positions
Are you really trying to blame the older generations? they had NOTHING. Things were cheaper back then sure but they physically had nothing. What are you gonna do blame the silent generation? LOL. We are so blessed to have the inventions and resources we have now and blessed that we’ve never suffered through wars or the great depression. The discoveries we have now such as the Polio vaccine, measles, cancer treatments, Ride shares, new technology etc could have saved tens of millions of people back then. Its a different type of trauma. Don’t sit here and blame everybody else for our generations problems. NOBODY planned for it to be like this.

@@cleliaparnell8743Old people think you put two spaces after punctuation due to typewriters. Shut up.
I'm 26, worked 11 years continously more than half of it holding down two jobs around 70 hrs a week.
Y'all older people are pathetic acting like any of y'all worked hard living in times when a couple of days would pay your rent food and utilities. Genuinely this immature nonsense of old people with comfortable lives complaining how hard or not other people are working is a joke.
Especially from a joke like Dr. Phil, someone that bailed on his actual education to entertain older women that sit in front of a couch all day.
An eo has to come to be the heir of hyrule
What an embarrassment to act like that last thing was just normal.😂
It is Phillip let me put it into Looney tunes terms you can understand and get rabbit season duck season Elmer Fudd truth
Change your habits and you won’t stereotype yourselves. It’s not rocket science.
Habits are not enough to make ends meet
Did you just ask Gen Z to change their habits to avoid being stereotyped? Do you understand the definition of a stereotype?
That’s what I say about the blacks. Quit holding up 7-11 and pull your pants up and you won’t be stereotyped. Pretty simple logic.
I love how they try to convince others they're not like that.. its just like how they want us all to believe a man can become a woman and vise versa. Now why would SO MANY ppl think that. Its bc weve all witnessed it. And it's pathetic.
3:02 BrianTheDiamond? Does this person look like he is going to buy a house, raise a family and join PTA? If you are going to talk to Gen Z folks at least gets some that look a little less self absorbed.
I love the teacher complaining about 'these dang kids always on their phones' and the only reason they're not failing is because of "grade inflation." Meanwhile he's on his phone all the time too😂 Maybe his lectures just suck, and that's why no one pays attention to them.
A lot of teachers simply aren’t good at their job. I was motivated and did well in the classes of the teachers that actually loved what they were doing and tried.
also I don’t think the other kids in class were paying much attention before phones either lol.
Nope social media addiction is real, and will destroy democracy for china to take you over. then you are finnished.
Not to say all gen z are lazy but idk I feel like back in the days when it was older ppl working they took their job seriously even if they were not getting paid much some had 2 to 3 jobs and wasn't complaining. I was one myself I had 3 jobs and went to school some jobs didn't paid much, but I made it work and was able to save $18,000 and move out. And never did I treat any customers bad. But then again that's just me also my friends were the same too, and we made the best with the job we had, but now in days all I hear from the new generation is oh I want to go home, and are short tempered, no patience, get upset quick. For example how come in McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, food use to all taste soo good, even though they wasn't getting paid well, but they we're serious about giving good customer experience, and they cared about how they did the food and they taste soo good, now in days those food chain taste horrible 🤮 bc they don't want to work and complain to much, and catch an attitude and give you bad order. Then you gotta go back and tell them hey my nuggets are cold and stale, same along with the fries, and coffee and they look at you like your wrong. Is not given for free the customer paid for it and should get what they paid for, not Luke warm, and stale food otherwise say hey we sell cold and stale food then we understand what we getting 😒 I worked in everything type of job, clothing store, hotel, office even when they had Blimpies I made good sandwiches when I worked their before they closed down and went for another job which btw I don't know why they closed. But yeah I have many experience, and made sure when Idid my job I did well, and when I worked with refunds on clothes which is a pain in the butt I did and so on. So when I see ppl complain in their job it's annoying to see, and many quit their jobs at a drop of a hat 🤷♀️
The only complain I have is on price inflation is making everything to dang expensive, and hard for young ppl to move on their own. And just everything is expensive Is causing stress on ppl. And their should be a protest to not raise no more prices on everything, give the ppl a break 😐
Work ethics change over time. This isn’t a bad thing, and is one of the reasons old people hate young people.
Who is that cutie? 0:22
President Biden needs to democratize the workplace. The workers must have a say over how they work and the direction of the company. Bosses should be replaced by people who make suggestions, and it is up to the employees to follow them or not.
Is a millennial a baby boomer
no
Baby boomers are born roughly between 1955-1964. Millenials are far away from being that.
Lol no baby boomers right now are near 70

They are lazy
People would work if they get enough in return. To many generations have bowed to being exploited and messed with. Why should they help making rich people richer and getting pennies for it? The economy is so damn different now.
How so?
Boomers and Gen Xers have the nerve to call Gen Zs lazy when they screwed the economy up for decades and fostered a corporate style that no longer rewards the extra mile.
True
Gen Z is so preoccupied with pronouns and how they identify that they have lost touch with reality.
The young aren’t all liberal and the old aren’t all conservative. Also, why tf are you bringing politics into here? “This damn liberals are too soft. Back in my day, if we called a disabled person anything but a retard people made fun of you.”
Besides college there are a lot of good paying blue collar jobs. But you have to develop a skill.Trades are short handed these days but you will work for your money. They pay very well.Problem is younger generation doesn’t want to do physical labor.
not everyone in history was treated well in these jobs, let's not pretend that was ''paradise''
No, you can have literally every degree known to man and lose a job to the CEOs son.
@@JadenAizen Again I stand by my comment.Proud for you and your degree. But you Gen Z want to sit in front of a keyboard and have a cappuccino machine near by.Put some work boots on kid. I will show you a real work day.
@@crazysquirrel9191 And all Boomers own 3 houses in Florida and complain about every little thing. Are stereotypes really that truthful? Also, I think that’s a Millennial stereotype.
